Chapter 269 Demanding

"Yang Damei?" Yun Qishi frowned involuntarily. After a long while, she looked at Yun Duo and coaxed her softly, "Good child, tell Grandma what happened, okay?" As she spoke, seeing the hesitation and struggle on Yun Duo's little face, Yun Qishi assured her, "Child, Grandma just wants to know what happened. I promise I won't tell anyone."

Seeing that Madam Yun Qi had gone this far, Yun Duo finally nodded and said, "Grandma, actually, Duo'er doesn't quite know what happened either. It's just that Duo'er met Yang Damei today, and she told me about what she's been through these past few months. She said her father beat her, scolded her, didn't give her food, and made her do heavy work. I saw it with my own eyes; her arms were covered in marks, all blue and purple, just like mine used to be..."

"She also said that her father was going to sell her to an old man in his forties, a man who was old and ugly and had beaten two of his wives to death. She didn't want to be sold to any man, and she certainly didn't want to be beaten to death..."

"So, Duo'er wants to help her?" Yun Qi asked, looking at Yun Duo.

The cloud nodded.

Madam Yun Qi patted Yun Duo's little head and said with great satisfaction, "Grandma is very happy. Our Duo'er is a kind-hearted child. But, Duo'er, have you ever thought that you can help her this time, but you can't help her next time? Are you going to give her money every time her father sells her, so that her father won't sell her again? Duo'er, this is a bottomless pit..."

Hearing Yun Qi's words, Yun Duo realized that she had misunderstood and quickly said, "Grandma, I know. I'm not giving her money to take back to her father so he won't sell her. I'm giving her travel expenses and other costs so she can go to a big city to find work and her father can never find her again. That way, she can be free."

Yun Qi was taken aback for a moment before shaking her head and saying, "You child..." She then asked, "Duo'er, tell Grandma, did you ask her to run away, or did she tell you herself?"

“She brought it up herself, but it was I who suggested she go to a big city, to the provincial capital, and even offered to lend her money,” Yun Duo replied honestly.

...

Madam Yun Qi sighed silently, but couldn't bear to scold her granddaughter. After thinking for a moment, she looked at Yun Duo and asked, "Duo'er, where is that Yang Damei?"

“She’s waiting for me in a grove of trees on the way from our village to Moon Bay,” Yunduo replied.

"Didn't you let her come back to the village with you?" Yun Qi asked.

"No." Yun Duo shook her head.

Yun Qishi breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Alright then, Duo'er, take Grandma to find that Yang Damei. There are some things Grandma needs to ask her in person."

"Huh?" Yun Duo wanted to play dumb, but looking at Yun Qi's serious face, she felt that pretending to be dumb wouldn't work. So she nodded and said, "Okay, Grandma. I'll take you there." She added, "But Grandma, it's really because I want to help her. She didn't lie to me. She's in a terrible situation. Please don't scold her."

"Okay." Madam Yun Qi nodded, then looked at Yun Duo and said, "Duo'er, don't worry, Grandma won't scold her. It's just that there are some things that Grandma won't feel at ease unless she asks them clearly in person."

"You kids don't think things through. If something happens later, it will be too late to regret it."

Hearing Yun Qi's words, Yun Duo understood that Yun Qi meant well, so she immediately felt relieved, nodded, and took Yun Qi to find Yang Da Mei.
