Yun Duo nodded quickly and said, "Yes, thank you, teacher. I know, I will study hard."
Teachers inevitably show favoritism to students with good grades. When Teacher Zhou heard Yun Duo's words, she naturally felt that she was telling the truth and felt gratified. She also thought about how Yun Duo was being ostracized by her classmates but had not developed any aversion to studying, and felt that she was even more admirable. After thinking for a moment, she looked at Yun Duo and asked, "Then... is there anything else that you need my help with, Yun Duo?"
His words were questioning, and his tone was normal, but his eyes revealed certainty, clearly indicating that he believed Yun Duo 'needed' his help.
Yunduo does have something to say. However, it's not what Teacher Zhou thought.
For Yunduo, being isolated wasn't a big deal. After all, she couldn't possibly have anything in common with a bunch of little kids who were still steeped in patriarchal ideas and looked down on girls from the bottom of their hearts.
What she found truly unbearable was the boredom.
So, upon hearing what Teacher Zhou said, Yun Duo spoke up.
"Teacher Zhou, there is indeed something I would like to ask for your help with."
"Hmm." Teacher Zhou nodded with a smile and looked at Yun Duo, asking, "What's wrong? Tell me, and if I can help you, I definitely will."
The words were absolute, which was exactly what Yun Duo wanted to hear. Yun Duo immediately said, "Teacher, I would like to ask you to help me get a library card for the school library. I would like to borrow a few books to read."
Borrowing books?
She's only been in school for a few days, still learning the simplest Chinese characters, and she can already read books? That can't be...
Teacher Zhou shook her head and looked at Yun Duo, saying, "Yun Duo, it's not that I don't want to help you, it's just... you can't get fat in one bite. You've only been in school for a few days. Even if you've learned all the characters your Teacher Wu taught you, it's not much. You haven't even finished the first semester of first-grade Chinese, so how can you understand other books? Good child, listen to your teacher, let's study the knowledge in our lessons first. Studying is like building a house; you have to lay a solid foundation first so that it will be easier to learn later. If you're not willing to study the basics properly now and only think about learning more advanced things, you'll regret it sooner or later."
Her foundation was laid more than ten or twenty years ago! Not counting kindergarten, that's sixteen years of hard study, but that's not how you say it. After thinking for a moment, Yun Duo lowered her head and said somewhat helplessly, "Teacher, I just want to recognize more characters so I can preview the lessons the teachers are going to teach and maintain a good grade."
“Teacher, I know that unless they are young ladies from wealthy families in the city, there are very, very few girls in our countryside who can go to school. I want to study hard and prove to everyone that we girls are no worse than boys. We can…we can…” At this point, Yun Duo seemed to have forgotten her words, repeating the word “can” countless times before finally saying very quickly, “We can even be better than boys!” After saying that, she smiled with relief, then showed an embarrassed expression.
Although Mr. Zhou is a man, his thinking is quite progressive. He was pleased to hear that Yun Duo, a girl, had such ideas. However, he felt that her behavior was not advisable.
