Chapter 45 Not Opening a Charity Hall

"Those two old hags, they never help with any work, they just cause us trouble! And they even brought Yunduo home without saying a word... They old bastards, do they really think I'm a charity?" Yun Dazheng's eldest daughter-in-law rushed home anxiously, cursing as she went.

The brothers Yun Youtian and Yun Youliang had a huge fight when they divided their family property, which caused a great deal of unpleasantness. As a result, the relationship between the two families has been bad for many years; they are not even as close as ordinary neighbors, let alone brothers.

Therefore, although today was the day of Yun Shuisheng's marriage exchange, Yun Youtian's family still went to work on the hillside. Wang Shufang also finished work and went home. On the way, she met a villager and learned that Yun Dazheng had taken Yun Duo back to his home.

Upon hearing the news, she couldn't hold back any longer. She left all her tools with Yun Youtian and hurried home as fast as she could.

Because smoke was coming out of her chimney, she went straight to the kitchen as soon as she entered the house. Just as she reached the kitchen door, she saw Yunduo sitting on a small stool in front of the stove, tending the fire.

Upon seeing Yunduo, Wang Shufang's expression changed several times. She held back her emotions until she finally revealed a forced, insincere smile and said to Yunduo, "Duo'er, what brings you to your aunt's house today? You're not only here to play, but you're also helping your grandma with the fire. You're such a restless child."

"It's getting late, you should go home now, or your mom will beat you again if she finds out." As she spoke, she walked over and pulled Yunduo up.

"Eldest daughter-in-law, what are you doing?" Yun Qi was kneading dough (a mixture of cornmeal and bran) when she saw Wang Shufang enter the door and start talking rapidly. She knew that Wang Shufang knew what had happened.

"What else can I do?" Wang Shufang said, drawing out her words with obvious dissatisfaction.

“I work myself to the bone in the fields every day, treating myself like a man, all so that everyone in the family can have something to eat. And you and Dad, without a word, brought Yunduo back.”

"Mom, it's not that I don't want to raise Yunduo, but you have to consider the actual situation. Yunduo's own parents are shirking their responsibilities and refusing to raise her, but they can't just dump the responsibility on us, can they?"

Yun Da was picking vegetables in the field when he returned and overheard Wang Shufang's words. His face immediately darkened, and he said sternly, "You don't need to raise them! I'll raise them!"

Yun Youtian was convinced by her few words and was now hiding away from home. Without him around, Wang Shufang didn't bother pretending to be virtuous and immediately sneered, saying, "Easy for you to say. Dad, we're the ones supporting you and Mom. What are you going to use to support Yun Duo?"

"You're supporting us?" Yun Dazheng was already in a bad mood, and upon hearing Wang Shufang's words, his face turned red with anger. "Eldest daughter-in-law, are you saying that your mother and I are just freeloading here? Put your hand on your heart and tell me, haven't I worked? Hasn't your mother worked? We can still work and move around now, so you say you're supporting us. But what about in a few years when your mother and I can't work anymore and become old and useless? Are you going to starve us to death?"

Wang Shufen immediately pursed her lips and said, "Dad, if you insist on getting stuck on this, there's nothing I can do. Honestly, I think Youtian and I have done everything we could. You and Mom helped with some chores, but we didn't make you do any heavy work, did we?"
