"What is that?" Lu Zhimin was startled, and luckily he didn't drop the basket in his hand.
Why did you wake up so soon?
Yun Duo felt a little embarrassed. Although she hadn't intended to hide it from Lu Zhimin—after all, her plan was to give him a pheasant—she wanted to wait until her uncle and the others left to avoid trouble. Now that Lu Zhimin had found out, it made it seem like she had deliberately kept it a secret from him.
Fortunately, Yun Duo responded quickly. She was already next to Lu Zhimin, and upon hearing him speak, she immediately tugged at his sleeve, putting her index finger to her lips and softly shushing him, saying in a low voice, "Uncle Village Chief, keep your voice down, or they'll come and steal it." She then deliberately glanced around a few times before saying 'happily,' "Uncle Village Chief, when I went to gather firewood just now, I found two pheasants and a nest of wild eggs. I was afraid they'd steal them, so I hid them in my basket, covering them with firewood."
Lu Zhimin didn't think much of it; after all, these days, getting a bite to eat wasn't easy. Although there were pheasants on the hillside, pheasants were different from domestic chickens—they could fly. Unless someone had a hunting rifle, who could possibly catch one? The little girl had probably never even eaten meat before; finding a pheasant was truly lucky, and secretly bringing it back was understandable.
only……
"Duo'er, when you went to collect firewood, did you encounter someone shooting?" Lu Zhimin asked with some concern.
"No," Yun Duo shook her head, somewhat puzzled.
"It's good that we didn't run into them." Lu Zhimin breathed a sigh of relief, then looked at Yun Duo and instructed, "Duo girl, there are several families in our village that have hunting rifles. If you hear a loud 'boom,' don't go any closer, and don't hide out of fear. You should go to an open area, so that people don't mistake you for a pheasant or a rabbit and shoot you. Iron shot doesn't discriminate, do you understand?"
Yun Duo understood Lu Zhimin's words and knew that he was teaching her. She was truly grateful and quickly nodded, saying, "I'll remember, thank you, Uncle Village Chief."
"Good girl." Lu Zhimin patted Yun Duo's little head, then became suspicious again: "But, since no one shot you, how did you die... oh, how did you faint? Did you get bitten by something?" At this point, his expression changed: "Could it be that you were bitten by a snake? Ouch... Oh no!"
Yun Duo naturally knew how the pheasant had fainted, but she didn't say anything. Instead, she looked at Lu Zhimin with a 'curious' expression and said, "Uncle Village Chief, didn't the pheasant come back to life? It didn't die, so it couldn't have been poisoned."
“Silly child, it’s not that I’m afraid of being poisoned.” Lu Zhimin patted Yun Duo’s head and said, “The snake is a little dragon, and if you steal its food…” Afraid of scaring Yun Duo, he didn’t say the words “you’ll be punished.” He just said, “Uncle Village Chief will take a look and see if you’ve been bitten by a snake.” Afraid that Yun Duo would worry, he added, “Don’t worry, Uncle won’t take it from you.”
As he spoke, he took firewood out of his basket.
“Mmm.” Yun Duo nodded obediently and looked at Lu Zhimin, saying, “I was originally going to give one to Uncle Village Chief to thank him and my brothers for helping me repair the house.”
Lu Zhimin chuckled, shaking his head as he said, "This girl, how could Uncle Village Chief possibly accept your things?"
