When the group arrived at the dormitory, they went inside and found it empty. However, there was a piece of luggage on the lower bunk at the far end near the window, indicating that someone was already on that bunk.
Guo Ni looked around and saw that there were four bunk beds in total, but two of them didn't have wooden planks on top. She asked, "Duo Duo, which one should we stay in?"
Qian Duoduo looked at the radiator by the window and said, "Let's go with the one by the window. We'll have bunk beds, I'll sleep on top, and you can sleep on the bottom."
Guo Ni nodded.
Qian Xiang saw that the two people had already chosen a place, so he took the basin he had brought to fetch water. When he went upstairs, he saw that the water room was on the other side of the stairs, so he took Qian Rao and the other person to fetch water.
Guo Ni said, "This place is not bad. I think it's six people sharing a room!"
Qian Duoduo nodded. She walked over and shook her bed. Luckily, there was no creaking sound. She then shook the lower bunk, and a creaking sound came from it, making Qian Duoduo's teeth ache.
Guo Ni said, "Duo Duo, you're so smart!"
Qian Xiang and Qian Rao brought water over and started wiping the table and bed. There was a large bag made of fertilizer bags, which was actually filled with straw.
Qian Xiang said, "We don't even use this at home. It's too hard here. Honey, I feel sorry for you!"
Qian Duoduo snorted: Are you bullying us single dogs?
Qian Rao took the initiative to go up to the upper bunk and started wiping with a rag.
Qian Mao looked over and said, "I think this is a better place to put things. I'll get you some small sticks later, you can stick them here to hang a curtain or something. It won't be cold in winter."
Qian Duoduo gave Qian Mao a thumbs up: "Third Brother, you're amazing! Your idea really hit the nail on the head."
Qian Rao grumbled, "Your fourth brother works so hard, but he hasn't received a single word of praise from you."
Qian Duoduo immediately laughed and said, "Oh my, who is such a capable man? Isn't this my handsome and dashing fourth brother!"
Qian Rao's expression instantly changed from that of a wronged little wife to that of a sunny and cheerful young man!
Qian Mao shook his head. This kid is already a father, yet he's still vying for his sister's affection. But he'll let it slide today because he's been working hard. Anyway, he'll be working here in the future, so he'll have way more opportunities to see his sister than he does!
Seeing that Qian Rao had almost finished wiping, Qian Duoduo threw the bedding she had brought onto the upper bunk. Qian Rao immediately transformed into a housework expert, and together with Qian Mao, they made up Qian Duoduo's bed and tidied up some of the personal items that Qian Duoduo had brought.
Qian Xiang and Guo Ni also tidied up the lower bunk. Everyone was in a good mood after tidying up.
Just then, they heard two people talking outside the door. All five people inside looked towards the door and saw two people walk in. One was a man with a patch on his pants and a large bag on his shoulder. He seemed a little nervous seeing so many people in the room.
The woman who entered before him looked at the people in the room and said cheerfully, "Hello, I am an educated youth from Liaoning Province. My name is Tian Rong. I used to work as the women's director at the oil field. I am very happy to have been able to pass the exam and become your roommates."
Qian Duoduo greeted her with a smile, saying, "Hello, my name is Qian Duoduo, and this is my sister-in-law, Guo Ni!"
Tian Rong smiled and said, "Hello, this is my man, Tian Qing!"
Qian Duoduo exclaimed in surprise, "You two actually share the same surname?"
Tian Rong smiled and said, "Well, it's quite a coincidence!"
Qian Duoduo said, "My sister-in-law and I chose this spot. It looks like the lower bunk opposite us is also taken. You can choose another spot."
Tian Rong looked around and chose a bed without an upper bunk near the door. Tian Qing went over and put her things on the bed, and then heard a creak.
Tian Qing immediately began to check, and looked up to say, "It's nothing, just a loose screw. I'll go downstairs to get a wrench and tighten it."
Tian Rong nodded and said, "Okay, you go ahead, I'll go get some water and wipe myself down." The couple nodded to Qian Duoduo and the others and then went out.
Qian Duoduo glanced at Tian Rong and her husband, then at her roommate whom she hadn't seen in a long time. Was she really that trusting of them?
Qian Duoduo looked at herself and Guo Ni, who had already packed up, and said, "Sister-in-law, let's go and buy a lock to lock up our things."
Guo Ni was taken aback: "Do we have anything valuable? Maybe we don't need it?"
Qian Duoduo said, "I'm just keeping an eye out for petty people. Besides, I don't want my things to be displayed in front of others!"
Guo Ni shuddered at the thought that everyone knew what she owned, and that everyone knew where her money was. She said, "Duoduo, let's go, I'll go with you to buy a lock."
Hearing what Qian Duoduo and Guo Ni were saying, Qian Mao walked over to their cabinet, looked at it, and said, "This lock is a bit twisted and can't be used anymore. We need to buy a new one. Also, this cabinet must have been opened by a thief before, otherwise it wouldn't be in this state."
Qian Duoduo looked at hers, then at Guo Ni's intact clasp, and muttered, "Ugh, why do I have to pay extra? Don't they know money is hard to earn?"
Seeing Qian Duoduo's disdainful expression but clear eyes, Guo Ni smiled and pushed her, saying, "Let's hurry up and go. It's lunchtime. Let's go to the instructor's to get our meal tickets!"
Qian Duoduo nodded. This was important. The group walked out of the dormitory and saw Tian Rong and her husband returning with water. When she saw Tian Qing holding a screwdriver, she immediately said, "Comrade Tian, could I borrow your screwdriver for a moment? I want to remove the latch on my cabinet."
