After completing a four-month study tour in Jiangxi Province, Professor Yuan led them on a journey to the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps in Northwest China.
Company Commander Yu was quite reliable. He sent two men to accompany Professor Yuan and bought a total of six hard sleeper tickets. They traveled for a day and a night on the train to Chang'an City in Qin Province, and then transferred to another train. This time, however, it was better than last time because they had sleeper berths. Professor Yuan's professorship was quite useful, so they bought four sleeper tickets, which bought the entire soft sleeper compartment. The other two soldiers were also specially approved to buy two soft sleeper tickets because they were to protect Professor Yuan and the others. One of them stayed with Professor Yuan, while the other stayed with Liang Kun in another compartment.
Qian Duoduo, being a girl, shared a lower bunk with Professor Yuan. When they departed from Chang'an City, things were a bit better, although the compartments were already full and there weren't many people on the side seats. However, at Baoji Station, a mother and daughter boarded the train in the soft sleeper compartment. They were both dressed neatly, but they were carrying large and small bags as they walked forward. Qian Duoduo was originally lying on the bunk, but since it was still morning, and seeing that Professor Yuan hadn't woken up yet, she decided to wash her face and then go to the dining car to see what food was available.
The mother saw a girl on Qian Duoduo's side, who was still sleeping on the lower bunk. Her triangular eyes darted around, and then she seemed to lose her balance and slumped down on Qian Duoduo's bunk.
Qian Duoduo was startled: "Oh my god, what are you doing? You're scaring me so early in the morning!"
The woman with triangular eyes said, "Oh dear, I've twisted my ankle and can't walk."
Professor Yuan was awakened by her shouts. He looked over groggily and saw a woman with triangular eyes yelling at Qian Duoduo on her bedside table. The girl next to her was supporting her and saying, "Mom, you've twisted your ankle. You can't walk. What are we going to do?"
Qian Duoduo was a little confused at first, but after seeing the exchange of glances between the mother and daughter, she seemed to understand that this might not be a good thing.
She said to the young soldier who came over from the upper bunk, "Xiao Yang, go find the flight attendant and tell him that someone here has sprained their ankle, and ask him to come and see if there is a doctor."
Upon hearing this, the woman with the three glasses immediately said, "We'll just rest here for a bit!"
Qian Duoduo shook her head and said, "How can that be? I didn't hurt you. What kind of business is it for you to rest here? Besides, if you rest here, how am I supposed to rest?"
Upon hearing this, the woman with triangular eyes widened her eyes and said, "How can you be so insensible, young lady?"
Qian Duoduo crossed her arms and looked at her, saying, "You're not my mother, why should I be so nice to you? We're both experiencing life for the first time, you can't just tell me what to do just because you were born a few years earlier!"
Upon hearing Qian Duoduo's words, the woman with triangular eyes immediately replied, "I just wanted to rest after walking for a long time, what's wrong with that?"
Qian Duoduo pointed to the side seat and said, "You can rest there, but don't bother me." Seeing that the woman with triangular eyes wasn't moving, she said, "Xiao Yang, why are you still looking? Find the conductor, are these two people from this carriage?"
As soon as Xiao Yang saw this, he turned around and left. The triangular-eyed woman's daughter tried to stop him, but couldn't. She immediately tugged at her mother's clothes, but no one paid any attention to her.
The woman with triangular eyes looked at Qian Duoduo. She could command the boy to find the flight attendant with just a word. She must be someone important! If only we could get something out of her, wouldn't this trip be much better?
Qian Duoduo watched as the woman with triangular eyes darted around her, alarm bells blaring in her head. She immediately said, "Don't try to pin this on me. Everyone's watching you. You're the one who lay on my bed and gave me a fright. My heart is still pounding."
Professor Yuan put on his glasses and couldn't help but laugh at Qian Duoduo's expression, which seemed to say, "There are always troublemakers trying to harm me." Especially the last sentence, when she immediately stood up the book in her hand, her shoulders shaking. The little girl was so interesting; her heart was still pounding. If her heart didn't beat, wouldn't she be dead?
Looking at Qian Duoduo, the woman with triangular eyes said, "My foot hurts, I can't move. If you insist on making me go over there, and my foot gets worse, then it'll be your fault!"
Qian Duoduo saw the train attendant following behind Xiao Yang and said, "We'll talk about how serious it is later. Let the attendant see your tickets now. Are you in this carriage?"
The woman with triangular eyes didn't hesitate; she simply took out her ticket from her coat pocket and handed it to the conductor.
The train attendant looked at the woman with triangular eyes' ticket and said, "Are you going to Urumqi? Your tickets aren't for this carriage."
The woman with triangular eyes immediately said, "We boarded the train because we had a lot of stuff and the train was about to depart. But I've sprained my ankle and it hurts a bit, so I can't move."
When the flight attendant heard this, he glanced at Qian Duoduo, since the bunk was Qian Duoduo's. However, Qian Duoduo didn't look at him; instead, he turned his head to look at the bed sheet on the upper bunk, as if the pattern on it were a rare treasure.
The flight attendant sighed inwardly. If he were in their shoes, he wouldn't want to either. After all, these were sleeper berths that people had bought, and it seemed that the mother and daughter wanted to stay there.
Seeing Qian Duoduo's appearance, Qiao Yulan felt a surge of resentment. It was this woman's fault for being so meddlesome; so what if she could stay in a sleeper car? If they hadn't failed to buy sleeper berths, they wouldn't have even considered coming in from the sleeper compartment. Her eyes darkened, and she composed herself. She spoke to Qian Duoduo in a plaintive tone, "This young lady..."
Upon hearing the other person speak to her, Qian Duoduo immediately raised her hand and said, "Call me comrade, we're not that close."
Qiao Yulan: "...Comrade, my mother sprained her ankle..."
"Stop talking!" Qian Duoduo immediately said, "This person sprained her ankle, it wasn't my fault. She suddenly lunged at me, which startled me. My heart is still a little sore."
The woman with triangular eyes rolled her eyes at her daughter, who had been repeatedly interrupted. "No, I don't!" she thought. Looking at Qian Duoduo, she said, "I've sprained my ankle and can't walk. Give me your sleeper berth!"
Qian Duoduo laughed angrily: "Auntie, did you leave your brain at home? You sprained your ankle, but it wasn't me who did it. Everyone here can see that. Don't try to blame me. Our country is a society ruled by law. You can't just act like a scoundrel. There are police officers on this train. The police will protect our citizens' legal rights."
The woman with triangular eyes snorted when she heard Qian Duoduo's words: "My son is a soldier."
Qian Duoduo laughed: "What, you think you're so great just because you're a military dependent? These days, who isn't a military dependent?"
The woman with triangular eyes was taken aback: "As a military family member, you should set an example even more!"
Qian Duoduo looked her up and down: "Someone like you, setting an example? Tch, don't insult those four words."
