After making a phone call home, Qian Feng returned to the guesthouse and saw his wife, Ling Yun, resting. He gently placed the lunchbox on the table and walked to the bedside. Seeing her pale face, he felt a pang of heartache. This train journey had lasted for half a month, and not only Ling Yun, but he himself was also feeling the strain. Ling Yun had originally wanted to rest for one night and return to Beian Village the next day, but he couldn't bear to see her suffer so much. So, he decided to stay in the provincial capital for another day. After all, it was different from the south; there were more Soviet-style buildings here, which couldn't be seen in other cities. After resting for one night, he would take her to stroll along the central street of the provincial capital the next day, allowing her to appreciate the scenery of his hometown. They would also visit the Songhua River. He had been to the provincial capital once before after joining the army, this time with his second brother, but this time, his wife would be with him. Thinking about this, he felt a surge of excitement. Why was that?
When Ling Yun opened her eyes, she saw Qian Feng sitting on the edge of the bed, grinning foolishly at her. As soon as she moved, she saw Qian Feng immediately put his hand on her waist. She mumbled in confusion, "What are you grinning about?"
Qian Feng laughed and said, "Did I wake you up?"
Ling Yun shook his head: "No, I just need to go to the toilet."
Qian Feng immediately stood up, found Ling Yun's shoes, frowned, then found a pair of slippers he had brought and placed them by the bed, telling her to wear them to the public restroom while he waited at the door. When he saw Ling Yun come out, he reached out and pulled her to the sink to wash her hands, saying, "I called Dad. We'll stay in the provincial capital for a day, and the train back to the county town is on the morning of the day after tomorrow. Dad is waiting for us in the county town."
Lingyun said, "Let's go home early, sea lions."
Qian Feng pulled her along as they walked, saying, "I've already made it clear. Besides, Mom and Dad know we're going back the day after tomorrow. And this is your first time in Harbin." After entering the house, he closed the door behind him, had Ling Yun sit on a stool, and sat opposite her. He opened his lunchbox and said, "Eat."
Lingyun saw that everything was something she liked to eat. Even if there were no water chestnuts or other green vegetables, there would be others. She felt happy again that she could marry him.
Qian Feng watched Ling Yun pick up food and eat, and said, "I've only been to Harbin once before, five years ago when I first joined the army. My second son and I took a bus from the county to Harbin to meet up. Back then, I went to Central Street and the Songhua River, but I haven't been to any other places. This time we'll stay here for a day, and I'll take you to see them. When I first went to Central Street, I was dumbfounded. I'd never seen those buildings before; they're all different from those in our country. I think you'll like them."
Ling Yun smiled as she listened to Qian Feng's words: "Okay, since you want to take me to see it, I'll go take a look too."
Qian Feng smiled and put some food on Ling Yun's plate, saying, "You've worked hard these past few days. Even though it's a sleeper car, you still can't get a good rest on the train. Let's both get some rest in a bit, and then we can go for a stroll tomorrow."
Ling Yun nodded. Indeed, spending half a month on the train made him feel like his bones were melting.
When Qian Feng opened his eyes, he was taken aback to see the unfamiliar room. However, the person next to him was still resting on his arm. He turned his head and gently kissed his wife's forehead, then gently pulled his arm away, got dressed, and took the lunchbox to buy breakfast.
When Ling Yun woke up, he saw Qian Feng setting out breakfast. The plump, white steamed buns and pickled vegetables made his mouth water.
Qian Feng smiled and said, "You're awake. Come on, let's wash our faces, then have some food, and then we'll take a car to Central Street."
Ling Yun nodded, got up, put on her clothes, washed up, and came back for dinner. She said, "The food here is a bit too salty."
Qian Feng asked, "You're not used to the food? I spent five years on Hainan Island, and even after coming back, I still find the flavors a bit strong."
Ling Yun shook his head and said, "It's not that I can't get used to the food, I'm just a little curious. The dishes here are all a bit dark."
Qian Feng said with a smile, "The dishes here are all colored with soy sauce, which is different from the light flavors in the south."
After the two finished eating, Qian Feng washed the lunchbox, and then they took a bus to Central Street. Ling Yun noticed that Qian Feng seemed to know the way well, not like he had only been there once. After asking him, Qian Feng smiled and said, "When I went to buy steamed buns this morning, I asked the people here, and they told me how to take the bus and how to get there."
Ling Yun immediately smiled. This kind of man is so good. He always thinks of her first. When he told her father that he would cherish her, pamper her, and love her, she was just touched. But now he has really done it and is taking good care of her. She feels very happy.
Seeing the Soviet-style architecture, the vast Songhua River, and the delicious Northeastern-style sweet and sour pork, the surprise in her eyes deepened Qian Feng's smile. This woman gradually won him over. Her girlish demeanor in front of her father, her feminine charm in front of him, and her decisive and efficient work style—every aspect of her surprised him, making him unable to resist.
He was diligent and responsible on Hainan Island, and was promoted to squad leader in his first year. In his second year, he participated in the joint resistance against Japan by several countries in Southeast Asia. Because of his good command in battle, he won a victory against overwhelming odds, which caught the eye of the company commander, and he was promoted to platoon leader. In his third year, the company commander was favored by his old leader and was promoted to regimental commander. As his most outstanding soldier, he also rose through the ranks to become company commander.
He never imagined that in just three years he would go from a greenhorn to a company commander, and even be appreciated by his division commander in the Southern Army Competition. It was then that he met Ling Yun, who was working as an officer in a small county in Guangdong Province. He would never forget the first time he saw Ling Yun. She sat obediently next to his division commander, which made him feel the warmth of seeing a younger sister. So he started paying more attention to her.
