Lu Yuan, Lu Hao, Lu Jin, and Lu Yu, carrying their schoolbags, walked home chatting and laughing. The setting sun cast long shadows on them. As they approached their house, Lu Yuan was the first to notice something unusual; the house seemed much more lively than usual today.
"Huh, why are there so many people at home today?" Lu Yuan said, puzzled. The other three looked up and saw several unfamiliar cars parked in front of the house, with bursts of laughter coming from inside.
Filled with curiosity and trepidation, the four brothers hurried into their home. Upon entering, they were stunned by what they saw: several people were sitting in the living room, and among them was the figure they had been longing for day and night—was that their mother?
Lu Yu has always been a sentimental person. When she saw her mother whom she hadn't seen for a long time, tears welled up in her eyes instantly, and she burst into tears, crying, "Mom, why did you only come back now? I thought you didn't want me anymore!" Her cries were like a sharp sword, piercing straight into the hearts of everyone present.
Hearing her youngest son's cries, Qian Duoduo felt a pang of sorrow and quickly got up to go to Lu Yu. She hugged Lu Yu tightly and gently comforted her, "Don't cry, baby. How could Mommy not want you? Mommy has always been thinking of you." As she spoke, tears streamed down her face.
Standing to the side, Lu Yuan watched his mother and younger brother embrace and weep, and he felt equally heartbroken, but as the eldest brother, he forced himself not to shed tears. He knew he couldn't show his emotions as easily as his younger siblings; he had to set a strong example for everyone.
At this moment, Qian Duoduo helped her youngest son wipe away his tears, released Lu Yu from her arms, and turned to walk towards Lu Yuan. She gently stroked Lu Yuan's hair, her eyes full of love and guilt: "Yuan'er, you've worked so hard. Taking care of your younger brothers must have been very tiring." Lu Yuan shook his head and forced a smile: "Mom, I'm not tired. As long as you can come back, we're happy."
Immediately afterwards, Qian Duoduo hugged Lu Hao and Lu Jin in turn, embracing them both. At that moment, the cries of the mother and her five children mingled together, making everyone who saw it feel a pang of sorrow.
Standing not far away, Wenya silently watched all of this, her eyes welling up with tears. She knew how well-behaved and sensible these four children were. Despite their parents' long absences, they still went to and from school on time every day, and after returning home, they conscientiously completed their homework and read extracurricular books without ever slacking off. Sometimes she wanted to take them out to play and relax, but the children always shook their heads and refused, afraid of interfering with their studies. Thinking of this, Wenya felt even more love and heartache for these four children.
Qian Duoduo looked at the children with a smile and said gently, "Come on, my darlings, let's go upstairs and see the gifts I specially prepared for you. Let's see if you like them."
At this moment, Lu Yuan and his friends showed a long-lost childlike spirit, as if they had returned to their childhood. They were so excited that they forgot to take off their schoolbags, held Qian Duoduo's hand tightly, and ran upstairs as fast as they could.
Upon returning to their bedroom, they were pleasantly surprised by what they saw. There were two or three exquisite boxes neatly arranged on the small bed.
The fourth child, Lu Yu, couldn't contain his joy. Like a jubilant little deer, he rushed to his bedside, obediently placed his schoolbag beside his desk, and then excitedly reached for the box on his bed. The moment he opened the box, a cry of surprise echoed throughout the room: "Wow! This is... a submarine! Awesome!"
Hearing his younger brother Lu Yu's shouts, the third brother, Lu Jin, immediately craned his neck and curiously peered over. When he saw the submarine in the box, he couldn't help but exclaim excitedly, "Wow, little brother, this is the submarine you've always wanted! It's amazing!"
Lu Yu was overjoyed. He looked up at Qian Duoduo with sparkling eyes and said gratefully, "Mom, thank you! I love this gift so much!"
Lu Jin stared wide-eyed at the submarine model in Lu Yu's hands, his heart filled with envy and anticipation, eager to know what his own gift would look like. So, he rushed to the bedside like a whirlwind, craning his neck to look over. There, he saw a meticulously crafted model of a warship, its hull sleek and its turrets towering, exuding an imposing presence.
Lu Jin blushed with excitement and grinned, asking, "Mom, is this really a warship?"
Hearing his question, Qian Duoduo smiled and nodded, but added, "Yes, baby, but you need to assemble these toys yourselves."
After receiving an affirmative answer, Lu Jin nodded happily, then turned her gaze to her second brother, Lu Hao, and asked curiously, "Second brother, second brother, what is your gift? Is it your favorite armored vehicle?"
Upon hearing this, Lu Hao smiled smugly and nodded slightly, replying, "Haha, that's right! And I don't just have an armored vehicle, I also have an amphibious vehicle, it's awesome!" As he spoke, he didn't forget to show his younger brothers the toy car in his hand.
At this moment, Lu Yuan, the eldest son who had been standing quietly by the bed, couldn't help but speak up: "The gift I received is a beautiful helicopter." As he spoke, he carefully picked up the helicopter model box, his eyes sparkling with delight.
Qian Duoduo watched as her four children huddled together, chattering excitedly about their new toys, their laughter filling the air. Perhaps influenced by their father's profession, they showed great interest in these military-themed toys, as if they were already on a fierce battlefield, commanding their own troops in valiant combat.
