Chapter 40 Trade Fair

The two agreed on a time, and Xu Xiangyang decided to go home next weekend, as there was no rush.

That day, he returned home from the black market and made over a hundred more, bringing his savings to five hundred.

He doesn't know much about current housing prices, but if he wants to buy a house to live in for the next ten years or more, then a better one is definitely better.

Good houses are more expensive, so that requires money.

Xu Xiangyang tidied up in the evening, then glanced at the time; it was already 5 p.m.

The time I arranged with Qian Wenqing was six o'clock in the evening.

He didn't know why the small gathering was held at night, but he was certain that it would be safer at night than during the day.

At this time, everyone in the workplace has left work, and even those who don't take a break are not at their posts.

"Brother Xu, over here!" Qian Wenqing called out.

The two agreed to meet in front of the supply and marketing cooperative. By then, the cooperative was already closed, there were few pedestrians on the road, and the streetlights were all on.

"Have you been here long?" Xu Xiangyang asked.

He arrived five minutes early, but I didn't expect this kid to arrive even earlier.

Qian Wenqing waved his hand and replied, "No, I just arrived. I just went out to run some errands."

Without saying anything more, Qian Wenqing led the way, and they hurriedly headed towards their destination.

Xu Xiangyang glanced around and was surprised to find that their gathering place was not far from the black market!

The two arrived at the gate of a courtyard, and Qian Wenqing knocked on the door three times long and two times short.

Someone then came out and asked them questions, and only then were they allowed to enter.

Xu Xiangyang realized this was quite complicated; not only was there a secret code for knocking, but they also had to check it before opening the door.

We've stumbled upon an underground street market; we need to be careful.

But this is good, at least it won't be easily discovered.

Xu Xiangyang followed him inside and found that there were already many people in the house.

Everyone else came with baskets on their backs, clearly having prepared a lot of things.

He didn't bring anything with him; he came just to get a feel for things first, and would deal with the rest later.

This is probably not a one-off transaction; there will be more in the future.

"We're almost there, let's begin," said the man in his forties who had opened the door for them. Everyone placed their belongings on the large table.

The table is made of large wooden planks, about two meters long and one and a half meters wide.

It seems like everyone comes here often, otherwise they wouldn't have prepared such a big table.

"Xiao Qian, didn't you bring anything today?" a woman in her thirties said to Qian Wenqing.

Qian Wenqing smiled and said, "Sister Zhang, I haven't traveled far recently, so I haven't bought anything good. I just came here today to take a look and bring a friend along."

He knows everyone here and can greet them whenever he meets them.

Sister Zhang nodded without saying anything more, glanced at Xu Xiangyang, and then looked away.

There were many things on the table, such as flawed cloth, canned food, grains, and cured meat.

Xu Xiangyang stared at the cured meat for a couple of seconds. To be honest, he was sure he had this in his spatial storage, but he hadn't found it after searching for several days.

The logistics port is a very large place, so it will definitely be difficult to find something you're looking for.

"Comrade, how much is this cured meat?" he asked tentatively.

This can be taken back to the couple in the countryside; it won't spoil easily.

The woman selling cured meat was in her early twenties, with short hair and big eyes, and she kept talking to the people next to her.

When someone asked about cured meat, she replied, "It's one yuan and fifty cents a pound, and no meat coupons are needed."

Meat ration coupons were scarce at that time, with each family receiving only a little over a pound of meat per month. Some families with large members couldn't even afford to eat more than a few bites of meat.

Upon hearing this, Xu Xiangyang realized that the fresh meat he had been selling recently was cheaper.

I didn't expect cured pork to be so expensive, but it's easy to store, so I can eat it slowly.

The advantage of fresh meat is that it can be eaten fresh, so some people buy it.

"How much of this is there?" Xu Xiangyang asked, pointing to the meat in front of her.

You can buy cured pork if you want; it'll be convenient to keep it and take it home later.

The woman was surprised by his question, and although she was puzzled, she still answered.

“It weighs five jin in total. I’ve weighed it. There’s a scale over there, you can weigh it again.”

Xu Xiangyang had already seen the scale inside the house, and the cured meat in front of him was indeed about five jin (2.5 kg).

After thinking for a moment, he took out his money and said, "I'll take all of these. Can I have that bag? I can pay for it."

Since I didn't bring anything with me, it's still impossible for something to appear out of thin air... Never mind.

Everyone glanced at him as soon as he said that, but no one said anything. That's the rule here; don't ask questions.

For example, if you ask too many questions about the origin of something, people will get upset; nobody likes being asked such questions.

"Okay, you can have this bag. It's not valuable." The woman generously gave him the bag.

This bag is really worthless; it's just a woven burlap sack, cut into smaller pieces.

Xu Xiangyang thanked him, paid the money, and then didn't buy anything else.

The five pounds of meat were quite conspicuous. Even though he was now a driver, his extravagant spending would still arouse suspicion.

Qian Wenqing didn't leave empty-handed either; he bought a piece of flawed fabric. The flaw was barely noticeable, and he could use it to make a bed sheet or curtain.

As they left the place of the transaction, Qian Wenqing said, "Brother Xu, you can come anytime you want in the future. I've already spoken to Brother Liu today."

Brother Liu is the one who opened the door today, and it seems he's the one who calls the shots here.

Xu Xiangyang nodded, "Thank you. Please let me know if there's anything I can help with in the future!"

Qian Wenqing is a decent person, although both of them got what they wanted.

Xu Xiangyang needs connections, but what he really needs is driving skills.

Master Chen and Master Zhang rarely taught people before, so things changed when he came.

Qian Wenqing is now a skilled driver and will soon be able to drive on his own.

In fact, Xu Xiangyang had long known the intention behind introducing him, but the other party had no bad intentions, and he could solve his work problem, so why not?

Master Chen and Master Zhang were not happy, but they never said it out loud.

Xu Xiangyang didn't mind; he would just be more careful in the future.

In his view, resolving the work issue was a good thing; offending people was secondary.

The two parted ways on the road, and Xu Xiangyang returned home alone.

Today's haul was five pounds of cured meat, and of course, I also learned about a small trade fair.

This place might be a good place to sell my own things in the future. Although it won't be a lot, it will be the most convenient place to earn extra money besides my job.

The black market is dangerous after all; buying and selling things there is not a long-term solution, as you can easily get caught, especially after a while.
