Chapter 57 Rural Peasants

The food was ready quickly, and Xu Xiangyang went to the window to bring it over.

The steamed buns and side dishes here are very large; two normal people simply cannot finish them.

But Xu Guangtian wasn't normal; his eyes lit up when he saw meat and vegetables.

I wanted to say something, but the food was already ordered, and I couldn't just not eat it.

He lowered his head and started eating, taking a bite of steamed bun and a couple of bites of meat, just munching away.

Xu Xiangyang felt a pang of sadness seeing him like this. He usually didn't even like eating these things, but in other people's eyes, they were like delicacies from land and sea.

Especially in my past life, I would order takeout, eat half and throw the other half away, and I had no idea how to cherish food.

He suppressed his emotions and then told Xu Guangtian to eat more.

Xu Xiangyang now has an idea: to ensure that the young couple will never have to worry about food and clothing in the future!

Having enough to eat and wear is what most people hope for now; nobody wants to live a life where they can't get enough to eat.

During the meal, Xu Xiangyang didn't eat much; most of it went into Xu Guangtian's stomach.

There was a little food left on the table, so Xu Xiangyang took out a lunchbox from his bag and packed it all up.

Xu Guangtian thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The large chunks of pork belly, ribs, and steamed buns were delicious!

Xu Guangtian smacked his lips; this was probably the most satisfying meal he had ever had in all his years of life.

We don't even eat this well at home during Chinese New Year, and there's so much meat.

He tugged at Xu Xiangyang, who was walking ahead, and said, "Dog... no, Xiangyang, this meal must have cost a lot, right?"

This dish is so delicious, with both meat and noodles, it must have cost a lot of money. He felt a little uncomfortable; he had only come to see the child, and now he was being made to spend so much money.

Xu Xiangyang smiled and dodged the question, "It's not much money. Let's go, let's go check out the supply and marketing cooperative."

He had a lot of tickets that he had obtained from the black market before and hadn't spent them. Now that Xu Guangtian had arrived, he didn't have to bother with them anymore.

The two men arrived at the supply and marketing cooperative. Xu Guangtian had been there once before, but he hadn't bought anything and was quite embarrassed.

Even if no one chased him away, the way they looked at him was enough to make him suffer.

Although he comes from the countryside, he still has self-respect.

Xu Xiangyang didn't look at him and walked to the counter where he was selling things.

"Comrade Xu? Here to buy something?" Shen Fangjun saw him and walked over with a smile.

Xu Xiangyang remembered that she worked here, so he nodded, "Yeah, I'll buy some things."

Shen Fangjun had a good impression of him, so she said, "The supply and marketing cooperative has received quite a lot of things today. Can you tell me what you need?"

Xu Xiangyang saw the thermos flask inside the counter and asked, "How much is this thermos flask?"

There's only one kettle at home, the kind in an iron bucket. We throw it into the stove to boil water, and then take it out once it boils.

There was no thermos flask at all. It was a little better now that the weather was warmer, but what about later? He was also afraid that he would forget again after a while, and his wife and he would be too embarrassed to say anything.

"These tin thermos flasks cost two yuan, for two industrial coupons. There are also the kind that don't require coupons, for one yuan and fifty cents, but they're not as sturdy as the tin ones," Shen Fangjun said, pointing to the woven thermos flask next to her.

Xu Xiangyang glanced at it and felt it wasn't very good; sheet metal was better.

"Take two of those metal ones, and two bottles of face cream too." He asked for some other things as well.

Xu Guangtian followed behind, wanting to say something, but dared not speak, and just watched Xu Xiangyang buy, buy, buy.

After buying everything they needed, the two of them left the supply and marketing cooperative with bags full of purchases.

"I'll take you to my rented apartment first, and I'll bring you food after I get off work." Xu Xiangyang looked at the things in his hand. Actually, he was still missing a lot, but he didn't want to spend more money to buy what he had in his space.

Xu Guangtian believed whatever he was told, since he didn't know where he was now anyway.

After dropping the person off at home, Xu Xiangyang gave them some instructions before heading off to work.

When Aunt Li from next door saw Xu Xiangyang bring back a man dressed in tattered clothes, she immediately went over after he left.

"Brother, what's your relationship with Xiao Xu?" she asked with a smile.

Xu Guangtian was already quite nervous, but seeing her smiling face made him relax a bit.

“I am Xiangyang’s father.”

Xu Xiangyang's father?

Aunt Li was stunned for a moment, then looked her up and down. This was too shabby!

Although some people do wear patched clothes nowadays, there aren't that many, are there?

"Where do you live?" she asked again.

"My home is in the countryside, not here," Xu Guangtian said, scratching his head, somewhat embarrassed.

It turns out they came from the countryside.

Aunt Li immediately lost interest. No wonder she had to rent a place to live. If she had a city household registration, why would she need to live outside?

"Get busy," she said, then turned and left.

What's so great about being a peasant in the countryside? If you're not careful, you'll have a family to support. Even if you're the director of the grain bureau, let alone working there, you'll still be burdened by your family.

Xu Guangtian watched her leave, bewildered, and then closed the door. He really couldn't understand these city people.

Xu Xiangyang returned to work and prepared some things before going home in the afternoon, so that his father could take them with him.

I packed some food from the cafeteria and then reheated the leftovers from lunch in it.

Anyway, I'll try not to spend money if I can avoid it. I'll save up more money and buy a house first.

When Xu Guangtian got home, he was lying on the bed in a daze. When he saw his son come back, he immediately sat up.

"What is this?" He was a little confused when he saw the big bun.

Xu Xiangyang placed the lunchbox bag on the table, and then put another large bag on the bed.

"When I get back, I'll tell my mom not to be stingy at home. She can eat whatever she wants and have a couple more clothes made."

As he spoke, he opened the lunchbox and said, "Eat your food. You can give her the rest when you get home."

Xu Guangtian could only nod and then eat.

He'd only been in the city for a day and had already eaten meat and vegetables twice; he didn't even want to go home anymore.

"Son, do you think it's possible to find your dad a job in the city? Even five yuan a month would be fine." He really didn't want to go back.

It's not that I'm pathetic and just want to eat good food, it's just that this city is really nice, and I've seen so much in just one day.

Xu Xiangyang hadn't expected him to have such an idea, but he hadn't made a name for himself in the city yet, so he couldn't agree to it right now.

"There's no rush. Let's wait until my mother gives birth. I don't know many people right now, so let's see how things go in a while."

Xu Guangtian nodded upon hearing this, realizing that he was also becoming somewhat anxious.

My son has only been working here for a short time, so why should I ask him to help me find a job? Wouldn't that just be causing him trouble?

Sigh... I was thinking too simply.

"Okay, let's eat first." He continued towards the meat and vegetable dishes.

Honestly, after eating these two meals, he'd be happy to go hungry for two days!

It smells so good.
