Chapter 38 Autumn Harvest (Part 7)

Gu Jianqiang saw that the sun was almost overhead and thought it was almost time. He stood there and shouted, "Alright, the sun is almost overhead. It's almost time to call it a day. Let's go back and have dinner. Come back around 2 o'clock. The sun is a bit strong today. Everyone go back and rest well."

Lin Feng walked out from the field, unplugged the water source, took out a bowl from the basket, poured himself a bowl of water, and drank it. Lu Zhenchuan also walked out.

Lin Feng glanced at the field where the two men were cutting sugarcane and couldn't help but sigh, "Don't you admit that farming is a physically demanding job."

Lu Zhenchuan: "I finished mowing a large area in one morning, then went home to eat and rest for a while before continuing. I probably wouldn't have time after that anyway."

The road was filled with villagers and educated youth who were working collectively in the village, and they were coming out of the fields one after another.

Lu Zhenchuan picked up the things and said to Lin Feng, "Carry them up."

Lin Feng picked up the remaining things and said, "Okay, let's go."

Gu Jianqiang also came over from the fields, and Lu Zhenchuan greeted him: "Village Chief, we'll be leaving first."

Gu Jianqiang waved his hand: "Well, go back."

After Lin Feng and Lu Zhenchuan left with two water bottles and a basket, Gu Jianqiang also left with the tools.

A young man walking on the road, holding a sickle in one hand and wiping his sweat with his sleeve with the other, said, "The sun is too hot! How can we still work under such a scorching sun?"

Another veteran educated youth traveling with him had already experienced this kind of weather. Initially, his attitude toward work mirrored the man before him: "If you don't work, who will? Just bear with it. You'll have to adapt. After all, it's going to be like this from now on."

"Oh my god, the sun is almost roasting me."

The villagers walking on the road heard the conversation of the educated youth and just thought in their hearts that the weather was indeed not bad. After all, the sun was out. Compared with the weather that changed from time to time, it was just hot and it was a great day. At least it was not sunny one moment and rainy the next.

"I don't have the energy to work when the sun is shining. Fortunately, it's time to finish work. Let's go home and rest for a while before we continue."

"I don't know when it will rain heavily, but this is good, it will make us feel better."

The educated youth who had not done much work were all complaining and walking quickly towards the village under the scorching sun.

"Dad, you're back?"

After Gu Hu returned to his doorstep, he saw Gu Jianqiang coming back with a sickle in his hand, and couldn't help asking.

"The sun is so hot and it's time to work. Should I let them all go back?" Gu Jianqiang said while wiping the sweat off his face.

"But the sun is almost roasting people to death." said Gu Hu.

"It's so hot out here, it might rain soon!"

Gu Ranzhou opened the lid of the pot, and the whole kitchen was instantly filled with the aroma of chicken soup. Gu Ranzhou saw that the soup was ready, so he picked up the pot instantly, and then lifted the lid, leaving a gap to dissipate the heat. It was not winter now, so it was not appropriate to drink hot chicken soup. Then he turned off the fire.

Although it is mid-October now, the weather is still so hot. It will not be cooler until at least late October.

Shanqiao Village is located in the southernmost part of the south. Although it is close to the sea, people do not live by the sea. Therefore, when other places start to cool down in autumn, the weather in Shanqiao Village is still very hot.

At this time, the gate of the yard was opened. When Gu Ranzhou heard the sound of the door opening, he knew they were back. Gu Ranzhou went out with water and saw the two people put down their things, and then went to wash their faces and hands by the faucet. Gu Ranzhou put the kettle on the table, and then took the thermos and bowls they brought back to wash. He also knew that due to the weather, he had to give them more water to prevent them from becoming dehydrated due to the hot weather.

The two children heard the noise in the room and came out.

As soon as Gu Yu'an and Lu Haoyu walked out of the room, they felt very hot.

“It’s so hot!”

Lu Haoyu also knew that it was hot outside, so he could only ask his brother to hold on for a while and wait until he finished eating. "Don't be afraid, brother, it will be fine after a while."

Gu Yu'an nodded and said, "Yeah."

Gu Ranzhou brought the dishes out from the kitchen one by one and placed them on the table.

"Come out and eat!"

Gu Ranzhou called the two children over. Lu Zhenchuan and Lin Feng had already taken care of themselves and also came over.

The three of them and their two children sat down and ate at a table. Fortunately, they were eating under a tree, and there was a breeze blowing from time to time, which made people feel relaxed.

Gu Yu'an's eyes lit up and he asked, "Dad, what are we having for dinner today?"

Gu Ranzhou: "I made shrimp today."

"How do you feel?" Gu Ranzhou asked after serving them some food.

"It's okay. The workload isn't a problem, but the weather is just too harsh."

Gu Ranzhou: "It's already the middle of the month. The weather will gradually become cooler in the second half of the month. Just be patient and it will be fine soon."

Lin Feng took a bite of the food and suddenly asked, "Oh, by the way, Brother Gu, shouldn't sugarcane be harvested in November or December? Why is it harvested so early in the village?"

Gu Ranzhou poured a bowl of soup for Lu Zhenchuan and placed it on the table to cool. "Indeed, what you said is correct. However, sugarcane here matures as early as September. Sugarcane that matures in September is considered early-maturing, so the sugarcane here can be cut in late September. The best time to cut sugarcane is around October to November. Sugarcane cut in December is considered late-maturing."

"As for a more accurate felling time, there's not much basis for that. It's mostly based on planting time, soil fertility, and so on... So the village's sugarcane harvesting time isn't so precise. It could be harvested in mid-October this year, or it could be harvested next year or the year after. Planting times will be different, so the harvesting time will also be different. Do you understand what I mean?"

Lin Feng took a mouthful of rice, nodded and said, "Oh, so that's how it is, I thought so!"

Gu Ranzhou: "Okay, let's not talk about this for now. Let's eat first. After eating, you can go back to your room and rest for a while. We still have to continue working in a while!"

"Well, okay, let's eat!"

After dinner, Lin Feng and Lu Zhenchuan were sent back by Gu Ranzhou to rest. The two children also returned to their rooms obediently, while Gu Ranzhou sent today's lunch to the cowshed. After returning home and putting the basket in the kitchen, he returned to the room and saw Lu Zhenchuan who was already asleep. Gu Ranzhou walked over quietly and slept beside him.
