At three o'clock in the morning of the next day, a figure walked out of Xu Jianguo's old house. It was Fu Bo who was going to Li Mancang's house to deliver a letter.
He first took out the key and locked the door of the house, then walked outside the yard and locked the door again, and then turned and walked towards Li Mancang's house.
After climbing over the courtyard wall easily, Fu Bo placed an envelope on the windowsill next to his main hall, then pressed it down with a padlock on the windowsill and left quietly.
After leaving Li Mancang's house, Fu Bo took advantage of the darkness to hide from the patrolling militia and returned to the space.
From then on, Xu Jianguo's family's visit to relatives ended here.
At five o'clock in the morning, Li Mancang, neatly dressed, walked out of the house.
When Xu Jianguo left yesterday, Li Mancang asked about their departure time, so he got up so early today, thinking of going to see him off.
When he walked out of the yard, he found Li Erniu squatting by the wall of his yard smoking. The two were stunned, then smiled at each other. The tacit understanding of decades was fully reflected at this moment.
Even though one of them was asking questions and the other was listening yesterday, neither of them said much.
But with the friendship built over many years, sometimes there is no need to say much. Just a look or an expression can make each other know what the other is thinking.
The two of them didn't say much and walked towards Xu Jianguo's home shoulder to shoulder.
But when the two arrived at the gate of Xu Jian's house, all they saw was a padlock.
After Li Mancang and Li Erniu looked at each other, they saw a hint of loss in each other's eyes. At the same time, there was a faint bitter smile on the corners of their mouths.
Seeing that the room was pitch black, the two helpless people had to turn around and leave.
On the way, the two men didn't say a word. Even when the militiamen on duty greeted them, they just nodded, leaving the militiamen confused and not knowing who had provoked them.
After returning to Li Mancang's house, the two threw the cigarette butts in their hands to the ground and stomped them out, and then sighed at the same time.
"This kid definitely didn't want us to send him off, so he left so early. He's still as cunning as he was when he was little." Li Mancang said.
"I specifically instructed the night watchman yesterday to come and greet me when he saw Jianguo and the others leaving, but there was no response." Li Erniu said unhappily.
Li Mancang rolled his eyes at him and said, "Come on, forget it! We only have those militiamen in our village. Do you expect them to keep an eye on Jianguo, a regular soldier? Dream on!"
"This brat was full of tricks when he was little, but I didn't expect him to become even harder to deal with after growing up and joining the army!"
"Forget it, you don't know him yet. He's very thoughtful and doesn't like the atmosphere of parting."
"Yes, indeed!"
"Come on, go inside and sit for a while. We'll have breakfast here later!"
"No, Yan Zi should be up by now. I'm going back now. Otherwise, she won't be able to take care of the two kids at home by herself."
"Okay then. If you have anything to say, come back to the brigade headquarters and tell them."
"good!"
After the two of them finished talking, Li Erniu turned and left. Li Mancang pushed open the gate and walked in, preparing to go back to the house to get an enamel basin to wash up.
And just as he opened the door, his eyes subconsciously glanced at the windowsill, and then his body paused...
After Li Erniu left Li Mancang's house, he originally planned to go home directly, but after thinking about it, he turned and walked towards the field, thinking of asking the militia on patrol to see if anyone had met Xu Jianguo and the others.
But he didn't expect that after just a few steps, he heard a burst of hurried footsteps behind him. When he turned around, he found that the person coming was Li Mancang, whom he had just separated from.
"Captain, what's wrong?" Li Erniu saw that his face was full of anxiety, so he quickly took a few steps to meet him and asked.
"This kid Jianguo left a letter on the windowsill of my house. Take a look!" Li Mancang said panting as he handed the envelope to Li Erniu.
Seeing this, Li Erniu pushed the envelope back and said, "Oh, just tell me directly. I only know those few words. I can't understand them even if you give them to me!"
Li Mancang thought about it and found that it was indeed the case. Li Erniu was good in everything except studying.
The county and the commune had organized many literacy classes, but no matter which teacher taught, Li Erniu's academic performance remained stable, with neither an upward trend nor a downward trend, which made Li Mancang very worried.
In the end, it was Gong Liang, the militia captain of the commune, who stepped forward, gave him a lecture, and warned him that if he failed to pass the teacher's test, he would be removed from his position as the militia captain of the brigade.
Seeing that his direct leader had spoken, Li Erniu dared not disobey. He managed to learn some characters, at least he could write his own name, and he could also recognize most of the characters on the slogans, barely keeping his position as militia captain.
Seeing that Li Erniu was anxious, Li Mancang didn't waste any words and directly told him the contents of the letter left by Xu Jianguo.
After Li Mancang finished speaking, Li Erniu stood there in a daze for a long time without saying anything. After a while, he came to his senses and then took Li Mancang's arm and walked towards Xu Jianguo's home.
When the two men used the keys to open the locks of the courtyard gate and the house door and entered the house, and saw the things on the kang and the table, the two old men, who were nearly a hundred years old in total (Li Mancang is 50 years old this year and Li Erniu is 48 years old this year), were speechless for a long time.
