Chapter 22 Chen Xianghong

They talked and laughed along the way, and took turns sleeping for a while. Before their waists became stiff, they finally got off the car.

This is too much trouble. Chen Xiangnan wiped the sweat off his face while carrying his luggage. He felt like he was going to rot on the train.

Li Xiuzhu pulled them to the gate of the commune, where she saw their team's ox cart.

"Uncle Li Si——" Li Xiuzhu waved her hands and shouted.

A simple and honest man on the opposite side also waved happily, "Hurry up, get in the car."

Li Xiuzhu pulled Old Lady Xia over and said, "Uncle, this aunt helped me a lot on the train. She's going to our brigade too."

The man immediately thanked Old Mrs. Xia and warmly invited them to get in the car.

Old Mrs. Xia was pushed onto the ox cart and sat with Li Xiuzhu. Chen Xiangnan, who followed behind, also got on with a large bag of luggage.

This ox cart is really sturdy.

Soon, the man drove off.

It took them a full hour to finally enter the village.

Chen Xiangnan rubbed his sore butt subtly. This was too much suffering, what a broken road and what a broken car.

And...that broken cow!

It was already afternoon. The village was vast, with fields as far as the eye could see. Chen Xiangnan struggled to carry the luggage from the car and felt that he was alive again.

"Xiuzhu, could you please take us to find Xianghong? I...I really..." Old Mrs. Xia held Li Xiuzhu's hand and pleaded.

Li Xiuzhu was a straightforward girl. "Don't worry, Auntie. I'll ask her where she is later. She's probably still working in the fields to earn work points. Just follow me."

After getting off the car, Li Xiuzhu asked a villager and then took them to the fields.

"Auntie, over there, wearing a straw hat and a gray-blue towel tied around her hands," Li Xiuzhu said, pointing to a frail woman bent over to work. "She's almost done. Auntie and Big Brother, wait here for a while. She'll be here soon. Just be careful of the insects. You're from the city and may not have worked in the fields before, so there are a lot of insects around there."

Old Mrs. Xia looked at him for a long time, but couldn't see any trace of the former Chen Xianghong in him.

"Is it really my Xiang Hong?"

Li Xiuzhu: "Yes, it's her. I won't make a mistake. Auntie, I'm going home first. If you have anything, come to my house at the village entrance!"

Old Lady Xia nodded and thanked him. She turned to look at the person getting off the ground and tentatively called out, "Xiang Hong——?"

Chen Xianghong wiped the sweat off her forehead. How come she could hear her mother's voice so clearly? Could she have had heatstroke and was hallucinating again?

However, she still straightened up and looked towards the place where the sound came from, and there were indeed two people.

She squinted her eyes and looked around, as if... it was really her mother and her second brother.

Chen Xianghong felt a tightness in her chest. They came to see her? Why at this time?

Is it because they are worried about the letter I wrote about getting married?

"mom--"

"Xiang Hong——"

"mom--"

"Xiang Hong—woo—"

Chen Xianghong's throat seemed to be blocked by something, and she wanted to cry very much. It had been several years since she saw her mother again.

She walked back with difficulty, unable to wait.

"mom--"

Old Mrs. Xia also wants to go to the fields. This is her Xiang Hong, how could... how could she become so thin?

Chen Xiangdong grabbed her mother and pointed at the water and mud in the rice fields. He said, "Mom, please don't make things worse for Xianghong. You didn't bring any extra shoes. The fields are full of water. How are you going to wear your shoes if you go in?"

Old Lady Xia glared at him and said, "I brought them. I have another pair! And, I know you brought an extra pair too!"

Chen Xiangnan: Huh? How did he know that? A fortune teller?

Old Mrs. Xia: Seeing how cocky the second son is, she will definitely bring more. She is his biological mother, how could she not know that?

Chen Xianghong had already arrived in front of them. She wiped her hands excitedly and wanted to hug Old Lady Xia, but she didn't dare. Even if she wiped them, her hands were still dirty. Don't let her mother's clothes get dirty.

Old Lady Xia didn't care about that. She hugged her and cried, "Damn Xiang Hong, you've suffered... Woo woo..."

"Let mom see, why have you lost so much weight? You're just a skeleton." After saying this, Old Mrs. Xia pinched Chen Xianghong's wrist and began to cry. How much suffering must she have endured?

The patched clothes looked very familiar to Old Lady Xia. They were made for her by her husband before she went to the countryside. They must have fit her perfectly at the time. But now, they were too loose for her. She even used a piece of rag to tie them up around her waist to make it easier to work.

Old Mrs. Xia looked at the straw hat on her head. It was more worn and loose than those on other villagers' heads, as if it had been picked up.

Mrs. Xia was right. She had found this hat and it was one that someone else had discarded. It had a hole in it when she first got it, so she asked someone to fix it for her.

Xiang Hong also wiped her tears, "Mom, second brother, why are you here? I'm fine, you don't have to worry about me."

Old Lady Xia tapped her lightly, hitting a hard bone. Chen Xianghong didn't feel any pain, but Old Lady Xia's hand did. "You silly girl, you say you're fine every day, but look at yourself now. How can you be fine?"

Chen Xianghong smelled the scent of Old Lady Xia. Although it smelled of sweat, it also smelled like her mother. "I must have had a bitter summer. Otherwise, I wouldn't be so thin."

Old Lady Xia: "I don't believe it. You always report good news but not bad news. I never saw you suffer in the summer when you were at home, and the summer was never as bitter as you are now. You are in this state now, I am afraid that you will fall down if the wind blows, right?"

Chen Xianghong held her mother's hand and said, "I'm very strong now. How could I be so weak?"

Chen Xianghong hugged Old Lady Xia for a while and said, "Mom, I'm going to finish work soon. I have ten work points today, so there's only a little work left. I'll come find you as soon as I'm done."
