Chapter 45 Dispute

"Sister, what you said is not right. No matter whether it's a boy or a girl, they are your own children and are closer to you. How can a nephew compare to a biological daughter?"

"Daughters are closer to their parents and are like little cotton-padded jackets. On the other hand, boys are extroverted and become less close to their parents when they grow up. Some of them are even less reliable than daughters."

"Your thinking is too backward. Even I, an old lady, know that you shouldn't say things like that, let alone think like that. Your daughter will be so sad if you do that."

"Your wife's family should visit more often, but you can't neglect your daughter and your husband. I don't think your husband is unreasonable. Your idea is really hurtful to your relationship."

"Yes, he is so good to you. My man is not so considerate to me. If I had a miscarriage, he might even be upset."

"Your sister-in-law brought you food yesterday, didn't she? I'm in the ward next door, and I saw it. There was even meat in it. Your in-laws really have nothing to say about you. That's the best."

"Yes, bow your head, apologize, and don't think like that in the future. Live a good life with your man and be nice to your daughter."

Dong Chunmiao looked dissatisfied. She thought these people were mentally ill. Why should she be hurt by a little girl?

It's just a small cotton-padded jacket, bah, it's a money-losing item.

"You know what? After I married him, he took all the money he earned and didn't give me a penny. I don't have a job. If I didn't go to my parents' house for dinner, I might not even have enough to eat, let alone anything else."

Dong Chunmiao began to cry, "I've been married for so many years, and I haven't had a single good day."

The onlookers were led astray again.

"She's quite pitiful. Her clothes are so worn out and her shoes are tattered."

"When I was a child, I saw that people fleeing famine were dressed better than her."

"Look at the hair tie she's using. It's so tattered."

"This child, her husband's family has a hard time too, how can this be possible."

"A grown man, but he doesn't even support his wife?"

"No wonder she keeps going back to her parents' house. She'd probably starve to death if she stayed at her husband's house."

"Young man, you're not doing the right thing. You have nice clothes for yourself, but you should leave some money for your wife."

Chen Xiangnan: "Is it because I don't give it to her? When we first got married, I gave her my monthly salary, and she took it to her parents' home the next day. My mother's mother-in-law made clothes and shoes for the family, but she never left out hers. She would start taking apart clothes to make for her nephew the next day, and sometimes she would give the new clothes directly to her sister-in-law to wear."

"Everyone in our compound knows what my mother is like. She's the nicest person, definitely not the kind of mother-in-law who's always trying to be harsh on others. If you don't believe me, you can go ask around. I wouldn't lie. We still have the receipts for the cloth she bought. My eldest sister-in-law is wearing cloth my mother bought. She can't possibly make it just for my eldest sister-in-law and not for her, right?"

"It's their family, on the contrary. If you have time, you can go to their village and take a look. It's only a four-hour walk from the hospital. They can't afford to wear such good fabrics. But look at what my mother-in-law is wearing, and what my eldest brother-in-law and father-in-law are wearing. Some of the fabric is specially provided to the workers. It's a benefit from my father's factory. It was originally used to make clothes for me, but now it's all in their house."

What he said was well-reasoned. Everyone's eyes turned to Dong Chunmiao's mother who had just spoken, and found that she was indeed dressed better than her daughter, and the pattern of her pants was also like that of a young woman.

Everyone stood on Chen Xiangnan's side again and began to denounce Dong Chunmiao and her daughter.

Dong Chunmiao wiped her tears and glared at him, "Are you trying to force me to die?"

Chen Xiangnan had known that she was this kind of person. It was useless to tell her that their daughter was also their child. She wouldn't listen to normal words, and it was even more useless to reason with her. Now she realized that she was going to fight to the death if she couldn't win the argument.

He remembered the nonsense Dong Chunmiao had just said and asked, "You just said your nephew is precious, but what does your nephew have to do with you? He is a member of the Dong family. If you marry me, you will be the daughter-in-law of our Chen family."

Dong Chunmiao: "My nephew will help me in the future."

Chen Xiangnan: "Didn't you just say that a married girl has no relationship with her parents' family? Aren't you a married daughter of the Chen family?"

Dong Chunmiao was confused. "But... I can only rely on them in the future. If I don't treat them well, how can they treat me well?"

Chen Xiangnan: "You mean I, your man, am unreliable?"

Dong Chunmiao fell silent.

Chen Xiangnan was furious, but he continued, "You've helped your family so much, but what have they done for you? Can you give me an example, even just one?"

Dong Chunmiao wanted to say that they had helped her a lot and were very nice to her, but after thinking about it carefully, she couldn't think of anything specific.

Dong Chunmiao's mother saw that the situation was not right. Everyone's contemptuous looks made her feel uncomfortable. She had to smile and smooth things over. "Son-in-law, Chunmiao is not well yet. Don't force her like this."

"Mom, I didn't force her. I just wanted her to come home with me to recuperate. My mom just caught an old hen and stewed it specially for her." Chen Xiangnan put away his stiff tone and said slowly, "Mom, you will take care of yourselves, right? My sisters-in-law know about this, right? I haven't seen them these past few days. Could it be that they don't know yet?"

He said this on purpose. How could they not know that the place where his friends fought was in their village? Their village was so small that if someone shouted at one end of the village, they could hear it at the other end.

Dong Chunmiao's mother was annoyed. What kind of look did those people give them? They were so friendly just now. This son-in-law was really unlucky for their family. There must be something bad happening when he came.

Her two daughters-in-law knew very well that after they were injured, she had them sent to the same hospital as Dong Chunmiao so that she could take care of them.

She also told her two daughters-in-law not to come, because if they came, they would have to buy food and pay bills, and all this would cost the Dong family's money.

It would be better if they didn't come. As her adopted daughter, she would find a way to raise the money.

If her son-in-law wasn't too stingy and refused to give her money, she wouldn't have instigated that fool Dong Chunmiao to find another resentful man to ask for money.

But just as they got some money, they were arrested. This little money was only enough for a meal for them, and before they could get more, Dong Chunmiao almost got himself into trouble. What a useless person.

However, now that things had come to this, she didn't dare let Dong Chunmiao stay, otherwise she would really be scolded to death. What if someone with a bad temper came and beat up her husband or her son again, then they would lose more than they gained.

"They will come, they will come." Dong Chunmiao's mother forced a smile, "I'll go see your father."
