Chapter 105: Initial Investigation of the Source of Rumors

Chapter 105: Initial Investigation of the Source of Rumors

After Aunt Li left, the room became so quiet that you could hear a pin drop.

Xu Yao was so angry that her chest heaved violently like a bellows, and her cheeks turned red.

She felt as if someone had poured a basin of dirty water over her head, her whole body was sticky and she felt extremely uncomfortable.

It was clearly intended to help the villagers, so how did it become "ulterior motives"?

This is even more unfair than Dou E!

Xue Han's face wasn't much better, it was as blue as the bottom of a pot.

He has been a soldier for many years and has experienced bullets and shells. What kind of storms has he not seen?

But it was this kind of gossip behind his back that made him feel extremely angry.

He held Xu Yao's hand tightly, the veins on the back of his hand bulging, as if he wanted to crush her hand.

"Yaoyao, don't worry, I will definitely get to the bottom of this matter and give you justice!" Xue Han's voice was low and firm, like a reassurance pill, which gradually calmed Xu Yao's panicked heart.

"Yeah." Xu Yao held Xue Han's hand, feeling the warmth of his palm, and a warm current surged in her heart.

The two decided to find out the situation from the villagers first.

The first person they thought of was the kind-hearted Aunt Wang, who was well-informed and could be called the "informer" in the village.

After finding Aunt Wang, Xu Yao asked straight to the point: "Aunt Wang, recently the village has been saying that Xue Han and I accepted donations. Do you know what's going on?"

Aunt Wang immediately opened up when she heard this: "Oh, Yaoyao, I heard about this, too. It made me so angry! Those people are so bored that they just gossip about nothing! You and Xue Han have done so many good things for the village, how could they slander you like this?"

"Aunt Wang, do you know where these rumors came from?" Xu Yao asked anxiously.

Aunt Wang thought for a moment and said, "I seemed to hear someone discussing this matter under the big tree at the entrance of the village. The tone of their conversation sounded so much like your third sister."

"Third sister?" Xu Yao and Xue Han looked at each other, and their hearts suddenly skipped a beat.

The third sister has always been jealous of Xu Yao's successful business and has tried to trip her up many times before. This time it is very likely that she is behind it again.

A cold light flashed in Xue Han's eyes, and he said in a cold tone: "No matter who is spreading rumors, I will not let him go!"

Xu Yao felt the powerful aura emanating from Xue Han, and her heart felt warm, as if she had found someone to rely on.

In order to further confirm, Xu Yao and Xue Han decided to go find Uncle Zhang.

Uncle Zhang is a man of high moral character and prestige in the village, and he is also well-informed.

After meeting Uncle Zhang, Xu Yao explained her purpose.

After hearing this, Uncle Zhang stroked his beard, pondered for a moment, and said, "Recently, I have indeed seen your third sister acting mysteriously in the village, and she is often with some people who like to gossip..."

Before Uncle Zhang could finish his words, he heard a noise coming from outside the door.

"What are you doing? Let me go!"

"Don't think we can't find you just because you hide in the house. Today we have to teach you a lesson!"

This voice... is my third sister!

The commotion outside escalated, a chaotic symphony of angry shouts and desperate pleas.

Suddenly, the door of Uncle Zhang's house was slammed open, and the third sister with messy hair, tattered clothes, and tear-stained face appeared in front of everyone.

Two burly women, their faces twisted in anger, held her arms tightly like a vice.

They looked like they had stepped straight out of a “Fight Club” tutorial—clearly not there for a friendly chat.

"Let me go, you crazy women!" the third sister screamed and struggled to break free from their restraints.

One of the women was tall and had a voice as loud as a foghorn. She sneered, "It's not that easy, Third Sister. Do you think you can hide here? It's time to pay the price!"

Uncle Zhang was startled by the sudden intrusion and stammered, "What's going on? Let her go right now!" But his words were drowned out by the noise.

It's like trying to reason with a pack of overexcited hyenas.

Xu Yao and Xue Han exchanged glances.

This is weirder than pineapple pizza.

Did these women attack the third sister because of those rumors?

This seems too much of a coincidence.

"What happened?" Xu Yao raised her voice, trying to make her voice heard over the noise.

One of the women, who was less intimidating than her companion, said angrily, "This sinister woman made up lies about my husband, saying that he had been stealing from the village! We are here to teach her a lesson!"

The accusation hung heavy in the air.

Stealing public funds from the village?

This is not just an ordinary rumor, but a serious crime.

Xu Yao looked at Xue Han.

He clenched his teeth and narrowed his eyes.

Clearly, he is trying to solve this bizarre mystery.

The third sister burst into tears and protested: "I didn't say anything! They twisted my words! I just said that his behavior was suspicious..."

"Suspicious!" the woman with the foghorn voice roared. "You spread your lies like wildfire! Everybody in this village knows it!"

The scene fell into chaos.

It was like a reality show that went awry, and Xu Yao and Xue Han could see it all clearly from the front row.

Uncle Zhang was kind-hearted and tried to mediate, but it was like trying to chase a cat away from a hurricane. It was useless.

Xue Han always makes decisions quickly, so he stepped forward.

His voice was calm and firm, cutting through the noise like a knife.

"That's enough," he said, glancing at the angry women. "Go outside and deal with it. We'll get to the bottom of this." His presence, his overwhelming aura of authority, seemed to calm the storm for the time being.

The women still glared at the third sister fiercely and dragged her out of the house reluctantly.

As the noise of the commotion faded away, Uncle Zhang's little room fell into a heavy silence.

The air was thick with unspoken questions and pent-up tension.

This is no longer just a matter of rumors.

Something much bigger and more sinister was brewing in their village.

Xu Yao and Xue Han knew they had to find out the truth.

They thanked Uncle Zhang for his time and left, their minds full of possibilities.

Is what the third sister said true?

Or is she just a convenient scapegoat?

Who is behind these theft charges?

As they walked towards the third sister's house, determined to confront her directly, a sudden shout broke the quiet night.

The third sister's sharp and provocative voice rang out: "You can't produce any evidence! If you have the guts, find evidence to prove my guilt!"

Her words hung in the air, like a challenge.

Xu Yao and Xue Han stopped and exchanged meaningful looks.

Things are more difficult than they thought.

Although the third sister looks fragile, she will not back down.

She was ready to fight, and they had to be ready to fight too.
