Chapter 41 Open Your Eyes
"I live... next door to your house." Xue Han's voice was low and magnetic, like a stone thrown into the calm lake of Xu Yao's heart, causing ripples.
Xu Yao's eyes widened, her face full of disbelief: "What? Next door? You...when did you move in?"
Xue Han looked at her silly and cute look and couldn't help but chuckle: "Just two days ago. You... didn't know?"
Xu Yao shook her head and muttered to herself: I have been busy these past two days breaking off the engagement and competing with each other for the best, so how can I have the time to care about who lives next door!
The two walked side by side on the way home, and the setting sun stretched their shadows very long.
Xu Yao secretly glanced at Xue Han beside her, and felt a strange feeling in her heart.
"Fate is truly indescribable..." Xu Yao couldn't help but sigh.
Hearing this, Xue Han raised the corners of his mouth slightly, revealing a meaningful smile.
However, this relaxed and happy mood did not last long.
The next day, Xu Yao went out to buy groceries. Just a few steps out of the house, she felt that the atmosphere around her was a little strange.
Neighbors gathered in twos and threes, whispering and casting strange looks at her from time to time.
It felt like there was an invisible net enveloping her.
Xu Yao's heart skipped a beat, and an ominous premonition came to her mind.
She took a deep breath and pretended to be calm and continued walking forward.
"Hey, have you heard? The youngest daughter of the Xu family has broken off her engagement with the Sun family!"
"I heard it, I heard it, she was having an affair with someone outside, and the Sun family found out, so they called off the engagement!"
"Tsk tsk tsk, I really can't tell. She usually looks like a very honest girl, but I didn't expect that..."
"That's right, you can only know a person's face but not his heart!"
A few middle-aged women gathered together, eating melon seeds and gossiping with saliva flying.
Although their voices were not loud, every word was heard by Xu Yao.
Xu Yao felt a surge of hot blood rushing to her head, and the blood in her body began to boil.
She stopped abruptly, turned around and glared at the gossiping aunties.
"You...what nonsense are you talking about?!" Xu Yao's voice trembled slightly with anger.
The middle-aged women were startled by Xu Yao's sudden action, and the melon seeds in their hands fell to the ground.
They looked at each other, not knowing how to respond for a moment.
"I...we are not talking nonsense. This is what the Sun family said themselves!" One of the aunts argued in a cowardly manner.
"The Sun family said that? Is what the Sun family said true?!" Xu Yao raised her voice, her voice full of suppressed anger, "In order to cover up their ugly faces, they threw dirty water on me, and you really believed it?!"
Xu Yao became angrier and angrier as she spoke, and tears were about to fall.
She felt like she had fallen into a quagmire, and the more she struggled, the deeper she sank.
"Xu Yao, don't get excited. The clear will be clear, and the turbid will be turbid. Everyone knows what kind of person you are." Aunt Li, a salesperson at the supply and marketing cooperative, came over and comforted Xu Yao softly.
"Aunt Li, I..." Xu Yao looked at Aunt Li's concerned face and felt a warm feeling in her heart, but the grievance and anger still made her choke up.
"Let's go, let's not bother with them!" Aunt Li took Xu Yao's hand and walked forward.
Xu Yao took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down.
She knew that now was not the time to be weak, she had to be strong and not let those villains succeed.
"Sun family... I'm not done with you!" Xu Yao swore in her heart with gritted teeth.
She thought as she walked, and the more she thought about it, the more she felt that this matter could not be let go.
She couldn't bear this blame for nothing, she had to make those who spread the rumors pay the price!
So Xu Yao changed direction and walked towards the Sun family with big strides.
The door of the Sun family was open, and Sun Zhiqiang was sitting in the yard, smoking leisurely, looking nonchalant.
Sun's mother was sitting under the eaves, mending the soles of shoes and humming a little tune. She seemed to be in a good mood.
Seeing Xu Yao walking in angrily, Sun Zhiqiang was stunned for a moment, then he showed a playful smile.
"Oh, isn't this Xu Yao? What? Is it not enough to cancel the engagement? You also want to come to my house to cause trouble?" Sun Zhiqiang blew out a puff of smoke and said in a frivolous tone.
Xu Yao ignored his provocation and stared directly at Sun's mother, asking sternly, "Aunt Sun, let me ask you, are those rumors about me spread by your family?!"
Mother Sun was startled by Xu Yao's sudden questioning and almost dropped the needle and thread in her hand.
She raised her head and looked at Xu Yao's face which was flushed with anger. Her eyes flickered and she felt a little guilty.
"Xu Yao, you...what do you mean? What rumor? I...I didn't say anything!" Sun's mother stammered and argued.
"You didn't say anything?!" Xu Yao sneered, "Do you dare to swear in front of everyone that those rumors about my misconduct have nothing to do with your family?!"
"I..." Xu Yao left Sun's mother speechless, her face turning pale and blue.
"What? You don't dare anymore? Are you feeling guilty?" Xu Yao pressed on, "I'm telling you, Aunt Sun, God is watching you! Sooner or later, you will be punished for your evil deeds!"
Seeing this, Sun Zhiqiang quickly stood up, stood in front of Sun's mother, and said to Xu Yao: "Xu Yao, don't go too far! This is all spread by everyone. What does it have to do with our family?!"
"Did everyone spread it among themselves?!" Xu Yao looked at Sun Zhiqiang coldly, "Sun Zhiqiang, can you honestly say that these rumors didn't spread from your family? Only your family would be so shameless and slander me so viciously!"
"You..." Sun Zhiqiang was speechless and his face turned purple.
He didn't expect that Xu Yao, who usually looked weak and gentle, could be so eloquent and aggressive.
"What? I was right. You have nothing to say?" Xu Yao looked at Sun Zhiqiang's guilty look and sneered in her heart.
Seeing her son being cornered by Xu Yao, Sun's mother was anxious and quickly chimed in: "Xu Yao, you... don't spit bloody words at me! Our family has never said anything bad about you!"
"Didn't say that? Well then, let's go to the street office now and ask the director to judge the case! Let's see who is lying!" Xu Yao said firmly.
When the mother and son of the Sun family heard that they had to go to the street office, they immediately panicked.
They don't want to make a big deal out of this. If it turns out that they were the ones who spread the rumor, it would be so embarrassing!
"Xu Yao, you...you should not be so unreasonable! Our family...our family will not argue with you!" said Sun's mother in a stern voice.
"You don't want to argue with me? I think you are just feeling guilty!" Xu Yao snorted coldly, "Today's matter is not over yet!"
Just then, a sarcastic voice came from the door: "Hey, what's going on? It's so lively?"
Xu Yao turned around and saw her third sister walking in slowly, twisting her waist.
She had a false smile on her face, but her eyes were gleaming with gloating.
"Xu Yao, you just broke off the engagement and now you're pestering Zhiqiang again. Isn't that a bit inappropriate?" The third sister's voice was sarcastic, as if she was deliberately trying to stir up trouble.
As she spoke, Xu Yao pulled out the neatly folded divorce certificate from her pocket and slammed it in Sun Zhiqiang's face.
"Open your dog eyes and see clearly! From today on, you and I have nothing to do with each other!"
Sun Zhiqiang was startled by Xu Yao's sudden action. He picked up the divorce certificate on the ground and his face turned pale and blue.
He didn't expect that Xu Yao would actually dare to break off the engagement with him, and do it so ruthlessly!
Seeing this, the third sister's face turned a little ugly.
She originally thought that Xu Yao was just bluffing, but she didn't expect that she was serious about it.
This made her feel a little uneasy, as if something was getting out of her control.
The neighbors around saw this scene and started talking about it.
"Oh my, this Xu Yao is really amazing. She actually broke off the engagement with the Sun family!"
"That's right. It seems that this rumor may not be true. Maybe the Sun family is deliberately trying to discredit us!"
"That's right, I think Xu Yao is a nice girl, how could she do such a thing!"
Listening to the discussions of the neighbors around them, the faces of the Sun mother and son became more and more ugly.
They didn't expect Xu Yao to be so decisive and tough, leaving them no chance to fight back.
Xu Yao felt happy when she saw the frustrated look on the Sun mother and son's faces.
She knew that she won the battle today!
"Aunt Sun, Third Sister, I'll say it one last time. If you ever hear any rumors about me again, I will never let you go!" Xu Yao's tone was cold and her eyes were sharp, like a sword drawn from its sheath, pointing straight at people's hearts.
After saying that, Xu Yao turned around and left without any hesitation.
She held her head high and walked with firm steps, like a queen returning in triumph.
The third sister looked at Xu Yao's departing back, her eyes filled with resentment.
She clenched her fists tightly, her nails digging deep into her palms, as if she wanted to vent all her anger and unwillingness.
"Damn Xu Yao! Just wait for me! I will never let you go!" The third sister swore in her heart with gritted teeth.
When Xu Yao returned home, she did not feel as relieved as she had imagined.
Although she had the upper hand with the Sun family, the rumors were not completely stopped.
She walked into the yard and looked at the fallen leaves all over the yard, feeling annoyed.
She bent down, picked up a fallen leaf, and placed it gently in the palm of her hand, her eyes full of confusion and helplessness.
"Oh..." Xu Yao sighed, threw the fallen leaves in her hand into the air, and let them fall with the wind.
At this moment, there was a noise coming from the yard next door.
Xu Yao looked up and saw Xue Han standing in the yard, turning the soil with a hoe in his hand.
He was wearing simple coarse cloth clothes with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing his strong and muscular forearms.
The sunlight shone on his body, giving him a layer of golden glow and making him look even more handsome and taller.
Xu Yao looked at Xue Han and suddenly felt an inexplicable sense of security in her heart.
She felt that in this strange era, having such a neighbor might be a good thing.
"Brother Xue..." Xu Yao called softly.
Xue Han heard Xu Yao's voice, raised his head and looked at her.
His eyes were deep and calm, like a bottomless lake, unpredictable.
"What's wrong?" Xue Han asked.
Xu Yao hesitated for a moment, and finally said, "I...I have something I want to talk to you about..."
Xue Han put down the hoe in his hand, walked to the gate of the courtyard, looked at Xu Yao and said, "Come in."
