Chapter 44: Eyes Full of Little Stars
The sunlight shone on Xu Yao and Xue Han's clasped hands, as if they were coated with a layer of gold.
The noise around seemed to have faded away, leaving only the sound of each other's heartbeats, boom, boom, boom, like drums, louder than the last.
But after a few days of these sweet days, gossip began to spread in the village.
"Hey, you say, how come Xue Han, a handsome guy, falls in love with Xu Yao? She has broken off the engagement..."
"Who says it's not true? These days, all the good cabbages are eaten by pigs. Oh no, it's the good men who are married to second wives..."
"Shh, keep your voice down, don't let Xu Yao hear it..."
These words, as if they had legs, quickly entered Xu Yao's ears.
She felt so uncomfortable in her heart, as if she was pricked by a needle and it hurt in waves.
At first, Xu Yao tried hard to hold on and pretended not to hear.
But as time went on, those words were like flies, buzzing around her and she couldn't avoid them.
She felt like a plague god, bringing bad luck wherever she went, and even Xue Han was unlucky with her.
"Have I... caused you trouble again?" Xu Yao lowered her head, her voice as soft as a mosquito's hum.
Who is Xue Han?
Those were sharp eyes that saw through Xu Yao's little thoughts at a glance.
He held Xu Yao in his arms and gently patted her back with his big hands, as if he was coaxing a child.
"Silly girl, what are you thinking about? You are my wife. Anyone who dares to say anything bad about you is making things difficult for me!" Xue Han's voice was low and powerful, like a reassurance pill, firmly landing in Xu Yao's heart.
"But..." Xu Yao wanted to say something, but was blocked by Xue Han's look.
"No buts! Those people are just bored and have nothing to do! Don't bother with them, just live your own life."
Xue Han's eyes were as firm as two stones, and would never waver no matter how windy or rainy it was.
Xu Yao snuggled in Xue Han's arms, her nose filled with the faint scent of soapberry on his body, and her heart felt warm.
She raised her head and looked at Xue Han's angular face, her eyes shining brightly.
"Okay, I'll do whatever you say!" Xu Yao's voice was soft and tender, with a hint of coquettishness.
Xue Han lowered his head and kissed her gently on the forehead, his movements as gentle as if he was treating a rare treasure.
Xu Yao's face turned red in an instant, like a ripe apple, making people want to take a bite.
Pink bubbles kept appearing between the two of them, so sweet that it almost choked my throat.
But this sweet atmosphere was soon broken.
Sun Zhiqiang is simply an indestructible cockroach, his vitality is so strong that it is outrageous.
He couldn't stand to see Xu Yao doing well, and even more so Xue Han doing well, so he started to act like a troublemaker again.
"Hey, have you heard? Xue Han is not a good guy in the company..."
"Is this true? What did he do wrong?"
"I heard that he...he had problems with his work style, so he was fired by his company..."
The news spread quickly from one person to ten, and from ten to a hundred, and soon it became an uproar in the village.
Everyone's eyes changed when they looked at Xue Han, and they pointed and talked about him.
"I was wondering, with such good conditions, why would you choose Xu Yao? Turns out there's something wrong with her..."
"Alas, it is true that you can only judge a person by his appearance but not by his heart..."
These words were harsher and more hurtful than the previous ones.
Xu Yao was so angry that she was shaking all over and she wanted to rush up and fight those people.
Xue Han's face also darkened. He held Xu Yao's hand tightly, and the veins on the back of his hand popped out.
"Come on, let's go somewhere." Xue Han's voice was as cold as ice, and every word seemed to be squeezed out from between his teeth.
Xu Yao was pulled by Xue Han and trotted all the way. She didn't know where Xue Han was going to take her.
The wind was whistling in her ears, and Xu Yao's heart was in her throat.
The square was crowded with people, like boiling dumplings, and it was very lively.
Xue Han held Xu Yao's hand and walked all the way to the center of the square. His aura was even more majestic than that of an emperor on tour!
He took a deep breath, and his powerful voice, like a thunderclap, exploded over the square: "Fellow villagers, I called you all here today to clarify one thing!"
The originally noisy square suddenly became quiet. Everyone stretched their necks and pricked up their ears, wanting to hear what Xue Han was up to.
Xue Han took out a neatly folded piece of paper from his arms, unfolded it, and held it high. The paper was dazzlingly white in the sunlight.
"This is the certificate I brought back from work. It clearly states that I was injured while on duty, not because of any work style issues!"
He paused, his eyes swept across the crowd, and finally landed on the pale-faced Sun Zhiqiang. The corners of his mouth curled up into a sneer, "Some people, in order to achieve their own goals, do not hesitate to spread rumors and cause trouble, and ruin my reputation. This behavior is simply despicable!"
With a loud "boom", the square exploded, like a vegetable market, with a buzzing sound everywhere.
"What? Xue Han withdrew because of injury? Then everything Sun Zhiqiang said was false?"
"I told you, Xue Han doesn't look like that kind of person!"
"Good fellow, Sun Zhiqiang is such a shameless bastard, he even spread rumors just to break up people!"
The villagers blamed Sun Zhiqiang one after another, spitting at him as if they wanted to drown him.
Sun Zhiqiang stood in the crowd, his face was pale, as if covered with a layer of white powder, his lips were trembling, and he could not utter a word.
He didn't expect that Xue Han actually had such a trick up his sleeve. Now, he was completely embarrassed in front of everyone and wished he could find a hole to crawl into.
Xu Yao looked at Xue Han, her eyes sparkling with little stars, and her admiration was about to overflow.
She felt that Xue Han at this moment was so handsome and cool, he was simply her hero!
Xue Han felt Xu Yao's gaze, and the corners of his mouth slightly raised, revealing an indulgent smile.
He reached out and gently pinched Xu Yao's cheek, like treating a kitten, "Silly girl, what are you looking at?"
Xu Yao came back to her senses, her pretty face flushed, and she glared at Xue Han coquettishly, "It's because you're too handsome!"
Xue Han laughed out loud; that laughter was hearty and confident, full of masculine charm.
When Sun’s mother saw her son being bullied like this, she immediately got furious.
She rushed to Xue Han, pointed at his nose and cursed: "You Xue Han, you dare to slander my son, you..."
Before he could finish his words, he was frightened by Xue Han's look and shut up.
Xue Han's eyes were as cold as ice knives, which made Sun's mother feel creepy.
"I advise you to keep your son's mouth shut and stop letting him talk nonsense. Otherwise, I won't be polite!" Xue Han's voice was as cold as the air in an ice cellar, and Sun's mother shivered when she heard it.
Sun's mother didn't dare to say anything else and dragged Sun Zhiqiang away dejectedly.
The third sister stood aside with a terribly gloomy face. She didn't expect that Xue Han would be so difficult to deal with.
She gritted her teeth and swore secretly in her heart that she must take revenge on Xu Yao and Xue Han and make them pay the price!
Although the rumors were clarified, Xu Yao and Xue Han knew that this was just the calm before the storm.
Sun Zhiqiang will not give up, and the third sister will not let it go either.
