Yu Jiu squinted and quickly scanned the surroundings. There was still no one around, only the sounds of cicadas and birds. It was still unbearably hot in the mountains at this time, and even children didn't want to come up to play.
She crouched down and rummaged through the decaying leaves on the ground with a twig, finally revealing what had been hidden rather poorly: a gigantic, gleaming gold bar. Yes, that's right, a gigantic gold bar. There was only one, but it probably weighed ten or eight pounds. Yu Jiu almost couldn't lift it; its weight made her hand go weak, and she nearly dropped the gold bar.
Who would be so bored as to carry such a large fake gold bar and hide it? Yu Jiu was convinced it must be real! So without even looking closely, she put the gold bar, along with the nest of wild eggs, into her spatial storage, and then, without looking back, she took another path down the mountain.
Yu Jiu was still a little uneasy after such a stroke of luck; her heart was pounding. She hurried back to Xu Zijiang's house, wanting to share her day's success with him. However, Xu Zijiang hadn't returned yet; no one was home.
"Where did you go? Weren't you answering the phone? Why haven't you come back yet?"
The empty house made Yu Jiu feel a sudden emptiness in her heart. She frowned, and even her anxious and excited feelings disappeared. She pursed her lips, closed the door herself, and then took out the large gold bar to examine it.
She first rinsed the gold bar with water, then dried it. Then she used the back of a knife to forcefully tap it, breaking off a small piece. It was golden and soft, exactly the same color as the little gold bean the broken bowl had given her last time. She easily confirmed that it was indeed real.
After learning it was true, Yu Jiu regained her excitement and joy. She put the giant gold bar back, placed the wild eggs in the kitchen, and then hummed a song as she went out to the commune to see what trouble Xu Zijiang had encountered or what had happened, that he hadn't even had time to come back for lunch.
"Xiao Jiu, what are you doing out here? It's so sunny outside."
She had just stepped out of the village entrance when Xu Zijiang rode back from outside on his bicycle. He wasn't wearing a hat or holding an umbrella; he just came back from under the sun, his clothes soaked with sweat. Yu Jiu reached out and pulled his hair, which was so hot it looked frightening.
"Why didn't you wear a hat? No wonder you're so dark-skinned, you've been getting sunburned."
Yu Jiu withdrew her hand in disgust and adjusted her straw hat on her head; without a hat, she would be scorched by the sun.
"Where have you been? Why haven't you come back for so long? Have you had lunch? I was worried something had happened to you since you hadn't returned for so long. I was just about to go look for you."
She complained softly, and glared at Xu Zijiang with her beautiful glassy eyes, clearly resentful. "How annoying! You dragged me along, molested me, and then ran away, huh?"
"Something did happen, but it wasn't me. Get in the car, I'll tell you the details when we get back."
Xu Zijiang pinched Yu Jiu's fair and warm cheek, then patted the back seat of his bicycle, gesturing for Yu Jiu to get on. Come to think of it, Yu Jiu hadn't ridden on the back of Xu Zijiang's bicycle more than twice. Just imagine how romantic it would be—one person riding, and the other sitting behind, with their arms around the waist of the person in front, a gentle breeze blowing—it would be the epitome of romance.
However, Xu Zijiang had something to do today and wasn't in the mood for romance. His high eyebrows were furrowed, and he seemed a little worried.
"good."
Seeing this, Yu Jiu stopped making a fuss and quickly sat down to go home with him.
Xu Zijiang was so busy at noon that he didn't have time to eat, and he was indeed starving. After returning, he sat at the table, ate his meal, and told Yu Jiu about the day's events.
“One of my former bosses got into some trouble, and he called me for help. He wanted me to bring his son over here to work as an educated youth, and then transfer him back later when things were settled.”
Xu Zijiang glossed over the matter somewhat vaguely, as it was of great importance and he could not reveal more.
Are you going to pick them up in person?
Upon hearing this, Yu Jiu didn't ask any further questions, but looked at Xu Zijiang with concern, as it sounded like a dangerous job.
"Yes, I have to leave tomorrow. I've already bought the ticket. I'm sorry, things were too urgent, and I didn't have time to ask for your opinion."
Xu Zi looked at Yu Jiu apologetically, wondering if she would be angry. After all, he had made the decision without saying a word. But regardless of whether the young educated youth agreed or not, he had to go. Military orders were like mountains, and besides, his superiors had helped him a lot and relied on him a lot. He couldn't refuse, both morally and logically.
"It's okay. If you have important things to do, you don't have to ask my opinion. I'm your wife, and I'll take care of a lot of things for you, but I won't deprive you of any freedom, or prevent you from making decisions about your own important matters. Since you've bought the tickets, I'll help you pack some things for the journey. Be careful, and when you get there and pick up the person, give me a call to let me know you're safe."
Yu Jiu displayed extraordinary magnanimity in this matter. She arranged everything for Xu Zijiang's departure in an orderly manner, which moved Xu Zijiang deeply, and he held Yu Jiu tightly and wouldn't let go.
"I knew the wife I married would be the most beautiful and wonderful wife in the world!!!"
"Stop being silly, hurry up and take a shower and go to bed. Look at your dark circles. How can you have the energy to help your boss if you don't get enough rest?"
Yu Jiu gave him a reproachful look, then pushed him to take a shower and go to bed, while she stayed in the kitchen to busy herself preparing some dry food for him to take on the road. Although Xu Zijiang didn't say it very clearly, Yu Jiu could tell that this trip was indeed dangerous. Although the level of danger was insignificant compared to the missions he had done before he was discharged from the army, there was still a risk involved.
Moreover, Xu Zijiang doesn't plan to bring that leader's child back via the usual route, so it's uncertain whether they'll be able to find food along the way. That's why Yu Jiu is racking her brains to make him some food that keeps well, just to be on the safe side.
Another mission was about to begin, and he had to ensure everything went perfectly, so Xu Zijiang stopped fooling around with Yu Jiu and obediently went back to bed to sleep. The next morning, he took the food and provisions that Yu Jiu had prepared for him and set off under the still-lingering darkness.
It's almost time to harvest the corn, but everyone is used to farm work, and even without Xu Zijiang's direction, they can manage to harvest the corn. The only problem is that with Xu Zijiang gone, some people might try to slack off. But the situation is urgent now, and Xu Zijiang can't worry about that anymore. He's handed over the team's affairs to Yu Jiu and Gouzi.
Yu Jiu was appointed to the task in a time of crisis, but she was not afraid. She was confident that she could manage the team well before Xu Zi returned!
The next day, she directed everyone to start harvesting corn.
