The harvest was over in just a few days. As soon as it ended, everyone started cultivating their own land without even having time to rest. Now they could do whatever they wanted, planting whatever they wanted. However, most of the land would still be used to grow rice and sweet potatoes, otherwise where would they get so much food to eat, and they would still have to pay grain taxes.
In short, everyone was planting their own crops on their own land, and their enthusiasm was high. They no longer felt so tired after the previous harvest that they didn't want to move.
The team was thriving, and everyone's faces were filled with smiles. This year's harvest was also quite good; after paying the grain tax, there was still a lot left over, which Xu Zijiang distributed to everyone. His family also received a considerable amount of grain, and Xu Zijiang decided to keep only the rice, a little sweet potato and potato, and sell the rest to the grain station.
They'll need food when they get there, and Xu Zijiang originally planned to send it over, but they couldn't possibly carry all that stuff. However, Yu Jiu had storage space, so Xu Zijiang only sent some things to avoid suspicion, and put the rest in Yu Jiu's storage space to take with them later.
Everything else was arranged. Xu Zijiang even picked all the vegetables from the garden. The rest was entrusted to Gouzi and Zhang Yan. They were told to take care of the garden and that they could eat the harvest themselves.
However, the problem is that we definitely have to bring our dog, Grey Grey, along, but little An An also wants to bring our three chickens.
Xu Zi will try his best to reason with her.
"The house over there is different from our house, there's no place to raise chickens, so we won't bring them over. We'll just kill one and make you a roast chicken, okay? One for roast, one for soup, and one for beggar's chicken, how about that? They'll all be delicious."
"But if that's the case, I won't be able to collect eggs every day anymore. How will our family have eggs to eat then?"
Little An'an was quite unhappy. She hugged her arms and started to throw a little tantrum, pouting. Every morning, she would go to the henhouse to collect eggs. This was her morning exercise; she would outwit the hens and try to dig out two or three eggs from under their bottoms. This was one of An'an's favorite morning activities.
She also really likes to eat eggs, and she eats them almost every day, either boiled or scrambled. Sometimes she makes egg drop soup or steamed egg custard, and Yu Jiu and Xu Zijiang can even make her steamed egg cakes when they have free time.
“When we get there, we can buy eggs to eat. You won’t be short of eggs, silly girl. Don’t throw a tantrum anymore. We can’t take these chickens with us. If you want to raise chickens and collect eggs, we’ll see if we can find a place to raise two chickens for you when we get there. Once they’re grown up, you can collect eggs again.”
Yu Jiu firmly disagreed. Bringing these chickens all the way there was too much trouble, and they'd poop the whole way. Leaving aside the possibility they might suffocate on the journey, they'd definitely leave a lot of droppings, which would stink terribly just thinking about it.
"But I just want these chickens."
Little An'an can be incredibly stubborn; no matter what you say, you can't reason with her. If you say a few more words, she'll even have tears welling up in her eyes, looking like she's about to cry. Yu Jiu was really having a headache. In the end, she simply picked up the stick she used to herd chickens.
"Then I'll give you two choices. If you bring these three chickens, we won't bring Grey. If you bring Grey, you can't bring these three chickens. You choose."
"Don't cry, or I'll beat you up!"
Yu Jiu rarely hits An'an, but sometimes An'an is disobedient and makes people angry. For example, right now, but Yu Jiu is just trying to scare her and doesn't really want to hit her.
In An'an's mind, Yu Jiu was much more intimidating than Xu Zijiang. Yu Jiu just put on a stern face, and little An'an immediately stopped pouting. When she heard the two choices Yu Jiu gave her, she pointed at Huihui with a wronged expression.
"I want gray."
"That's right, isn't it? If it's something you can bring, Mom and Dad will definitely bring it for you. If it's something you can't bring, there's nothing we can do. Don't make things difficult for us, okay? An'an has been so good, so Mom will give you a little reward."
Seeing that she had made her choice, Yu Jiu immediately threw away the stick and took out some treats to coax her. Only then did little An'an stop crying and start smiling. She nodded obediently.
"Okay, Mom, if there's a big yard over there, could you let me raise two more chicks? Even just one is fine. I'll help clean up the chicken droppings, so the house definitely won't smell!"
"Little An'an pleaded."
"Sure, if we can raise chickens, we definitely will."
Yu Jiu nodded and made a promise.
Xu Zijiang went to S City a while ago, but he didn't have enough time and didn't find a suitable house yet. He asked someone who was like a real estate agent to keep an eye out for houses for him. They will contact each other again when they get there. Xu Zijiang told him all his requirements. Now that so much time has passed, they should be able to find a suitable house.
However, before seeing the house, Yu Jiu didn't dare to make any promises about whether she could raise chickens for her. Yu Jiu didn't want to promise things she couldn't do.
Once they've settled things with An'an, things should be pretty much settled. Xu Zi plans to buy tickets tomorrow, for the next two days. They can use those two days to have a meal with their friends, say goodbye, and then embark on their new journey.
Xu Zi first took Yu Jiu and the two children to the commune to have a meal with Zhou Chunrong and his wife, and then the next day he went to have a meal with Gouzi's family.
Dog's mother looked at Yu Jiu and the others with great reluctance, still holding little Yuan Yuan in her arms.
“You’ve gone too far this time, but it’s good that you’re willing to take the risk. Gouzi wants to go with you, but he’s worried about us. In the end, we’re the ones who are dragging them down. Otherwise, you could keep each other company.”
These are the true feelings of Gouzi's mother. Actually, Gouzi's parents are still young and not yet at the point where they can't let go of this. The key is that the child is still so young. If they leave the child at home, Gouzi and Zhang Yan will not be willing to part with him. If they take the child away, Gouzi's parents will also be reluctant, and they are very worried that the couple will not be able to manage things while they are out there.
They figured they wouldn't make any money or be able to take good care of the children, so after discussing it, the family decided to stay at home.
Yu Jiu patted the dog's mother's hand to comfort her.
“Actually, we were very uncertain in the past. Whether we could make money or make a good living, no one could say for sure. I just wanted to go out and see the world. Xu Zijiang came with me. It's fine for Gouzi and Zhang Yan to stay at home. Gouzi is now the team leader again. He can make money in the future if he has the opportunity. Gouzi is so smart, and Zhang Yan is also very hardworking. They don't necessarily have to go out.”
"That's true, but it makes me feel bad that the children are tied up at home and can't go out and see the world."
Who wouldn't want to see the big city? Gouzi and Zhang Yan wanted to go too, but they compromised for the sake of their elderly parents. Gouzi's mother was heartbroken because she knew this. She was thinking that in a couple of years, if Yu Jiu and Xu Zijiang really made money there, then she would let Gouzi and Zhang Yan go too. Whether they could make money or not was up to their own ability, but at least they should be given a chance to go out and try their luck.
"Alright, Mom, what are you saying? It's the same wherever we are. I'm not saying we absolutely have to go out. Let's eat. Today is to say goodbye to the team leader and Yu Zhiqing. Just say less."
The dog didn't want to listen to his mother blaming herself; it was pointless. The decision was agreed upon by the whole family, and no one should blame anyone else.
Yu Jiu and Xu Zijiang also tried to smooth things over, laughing and saying.
"Let's eat. Once we've settled in over there, we'll invite you to come and visit."
