Chapter Twenty: Gu or Poison? (2/2)

The hospital director sighed as he looked at the man and slowly said, "The results aren't optimistic. We haven't been able to determine the cause of your illness yet. All we know is that your pulse is unusual, there are unknown toxins in your body, your organs are damaged, and there's fluid buildup in your brain. However, one of the interns mentioned the possibility of Gu worms causing the illness." Dr. Wang was taken aback at first, then a thoughtful look flashed in his eyes. "Gu worms? That's a very novel idea. Director, a friend of mine once went to a remote mountainous area during a research trip, where some ancient and mysterious customs do exist. Perhaps this is indeed possible." The director's eyes lit up. "Dr. Wang, where is your friend? Can you contact him? Does he remember any clues like his exact location?" Dr. Wang shook his head. "He always goes to remote areas; we definitely can't contact him." Just then, a commotion suddenly came from outside the door. Immediately afterward, the young intern who had tried to rush out was stopped by the soldiers at the door. He wasn't annoyed, and excitedly shouted, "Dean, I've found evidence! I just found an ancient medical book in the ancient book room, which records the exact same case as Dr. Wang's. It was indeed caused by Gu worms!" Upon hearing this, everyone couldn't help but re-examine this seemingly absurd diagnosis.

Immediately afterward, the dean hurriedly walked out, his face contorted with anger as he shouted, "Stop shouting here! What kind of behavior is this!" He glared fiercely at the panicked intern as he spoke. Then, the dean turned to Dr. Wang, his expression slightly apologetic, and said, "Dr. Wang, I'm so sorry. This new intern doesn't know his place and was so impolite, disturbing your rest. I'm truly sorry; I'll go see what happened." Before he finished speaking, the dean turned back to the intern, his eyes blazing with fury, and snapped, "What are you all standing there for? Come to the office with me!" With that, he turned and walked towards the office without looking back. At the same time, the dean called out to a nurse who happened to be passing by, "Go and call Director Qin and Director Li to my office!"

In the dean's office, after everyone had arrived, he said, "Think about what Xiao Fan (the intern) just said!" Director Qin and Director Li looked at each other, and Director Qin quickly said to the dean, "Impossible. I only believe in science. I didn't see any worms in his body. I've studied for so many years and worked as a doctor for so long, and I've never heard of any Gu worms. That's feudal superstition."

Director Li spoke slowly with a heavy expression: "In my opinion, while Director Qin's words have some merit, there are billions of living beings in this world! With such a huge population, it is only natural that some strange and bizarre diseases and inconceivable things would occur. Just because we have not personally encountered them does not mean that they do not exist in this world."

Speaking of Director Qin, he had always held Director Li in contempt. Although they were both directors, the difference between them was like heaven and earth. Director Qin only had two doctors under his command, and he usually treated minor ailments; on the other hand, Director Li not only had more than a dozen highly skilled doctors under her command, but her appointments were also often extremely difficult to get. How could she possibly allow Director Li to speak ill of her?

Upon hearing this, Director Qin's face immediately darkened, and he retorted sarcastically: "Your department spends money every year, and you still manage to diagnose difficult and complicated cases!"

Seeing that the two were about to start arguing, the hospital director quickly intervened, "Alright, the hospital is a place to help patients solve problems, not a place for you to quarrel. Once an illness is discovered, we should find a way to solve it! Xiao Fan, tell me! If it is a Gu worm, how should it be treated?"

The intern scratched his head and said, "It only records the symptoms of the Gu worm, but doesn't say how to treat it."

The dean said with some disappointment, "Does that old Chinese medicine doctor in your village know how to treat it?"

The intern shook his head and said: My mentor passed away two years ago.

“Alright, thank you for your hard work. You can go out now!” Then he said to Directors Lin and Li, “This patient is of great importance to the higher-ups. The Premier personally called my office, and the Commander-in-Chief of the Military Region personally brought him here. The security guards at the patient’s door are the best soldiers from the Wild Wolf Special Forces! So we must spare no expense and use all available resources to cure him.”

Director Qin said with a troubled expression, "Dean, none of the doctors in our department can figure out what the disease is. We even consulted Dr. Wu from the surgery department, and he said he had never seen such a strange disease before."

Director Li continued, "Since our hospital can't treat this patient, why not transfer them to Beijing? The medical resources in Beijing are definitely better than here, or at the very least, Shanghai would be fine!"

When the equipment was delivered, Commander Yu said, "The personnel will absolutely not be moved. If personnel or machinery are needed, they can be sent from Beijing or abroad."
