"Sister-in-law, what's this?" Ran Jinnian looked completely bewildered.
Zhou Hongying first introduced them: "Jin Nian, this is Yao Yurong, this is Huang Pingping, Chen Jinfeng, and Wang Xiaoli."
"Hello, sisters-in-law." Seeing everyone at the door, Ran Jinnian immediately invited them into the house: "Please make yourselves at home, don't be shy."
After Ran Jinnian finished speaking, she went to pour water again.
"Jin Nian, don't be busy for now." Zhou Hongying pulled her to sit down. "We came to see you because of this performance."
Looking for me?
Ran Jinnian paused for a moment, then immediately said, "Sister-in-law, I'm heavily pregnant and won't be participating in this performance."
Zhou Hongying laughed: "Of course you can't participate with your big belly; the baby is the most important thing."
Ran Jinnian was even more confused: "You didn't ask me to participate in a performance, so what is it?"
"Girl."
A woman with a round face spoke cheerfully: "My name is Yao Yurong. We've come to see you because we'd like you to help us decide what kind of performance to put on."
Ran Jinnian was both amused and exasperated. She quickly waved her hand and said, "I can't do it. I can't sing, and I can't dance either."
“We don’t sing or dance either,” another family member said.
"What can I refer to?"
Ran Jinnian became increasingly confused.
"Let me explain." Zhou Hongying stood up, worried that the crowd would disturb Ran Jinnian. "It's like this, these girls want to participate in this performance. But none of them can sing or dance, and they were thinking that since you have a high level of education, maybe you could perform something else."
Ran Jinnian understood now, but she was a little confused. If she couldn't sing or dance, why did she have to perform?
Zhou Hongying leaned closer and whispered in her ear, "They all gave birth to girls, and their in-laws don't value them. Their husbands don't treat them well. They're thinking about whether they can change their situation."
Ran Jin understood.
She looked at her sisters-in-law with admiration, knowing that only by being brave could she become strong.
She thought about it seriously: "I have an idea, it's not about singing or dancing."
Everyone got excited: "What's that?"
"This performance is called a drama, a performance mainly in the form of dialogue." Ran Jinnian added, worried that everyone might not understand: "It's like acting on TV."
They exchanged glances, none of them showing any confidence: "Acting? How are we supposed to act this?"
Ran Jinnian put it simply: "It's about performing the story you're going to perform, so that everyone knows what you're performing."
"Then what should we act out?" Yao Yurong asked.
Ran Jinnian paused for a moment: "This requires a story script."
She died in 1982 in her previous life. Guangzhou was developing rapidly and was an important major city in the country.
She had only seen one play, when she first went to Guangzhou, before she and Song Zehan had broken up.
The streets of Guangzhou were filled with advertisements for plays, and Song Zehan took her to see one. She still remembers it vividly.
Everyone got excited:
"Hey girl, where can I find the script for this play?"
"Hey girl, how much does the story script cost?"
"Girl, I want to act in this play."
Zhou Hongying spoke up: "Don't argue, listen to what Jin Nian has to say."
Everyone quieted down again.
"The script for this play isn't for sale." Ran Jinnian had read too many books in her spatial dimension, and this was combined with her experience from her previous life.
She knew that scripts were all written.
Huang Pingping looked disappointed: "Ah, how can we film this play without a script?"
"It seems there's nothing we can do." Wang Xiaoli, who had been silent until now, looked dejected.
