Qin Zhizhi's grandmother slowly raised her head, a kind smile on her face. "You're back. I don't feel at ease if I don't do something at home. In another two years, my eyesight will be bad, and I won't be able to do it even if I want to."
Qin Zhizhi stepped forward and gently took her grandmother's hand: "Your uncle and the others are worried about your eyes, that's why they told you not to do these chores. You'll make them worry."
Qin Zhizhi's maternal grandmother: "When don't they worry? Don't worry about them."
"You're so stubborn," Qin Zhizhi muttered softly, then added, "Grandma, Su Yue said she has something she wants to ask you, and she's waiting outside now."
Qin Zhizhi's grandmother asked curiously, "Fu Shen's wife, what did she want to ask me about?"
Qin Zhizhi asked in surprise, "Grandma, you never leave the house, how did you know that Su Yue is Fu Shen's wife?"
Qin Zhizhi's maternal grandmother said with a smile, "During dinner last night, your uncle and the others said, 'Let her in. Why make her wait outside? Our family isn't like those wealthy families of the past, where we still have to go through all that formality.'"
Qin Zhizhi turned and quickly went out, calling out enthusiastically, "Su Yue, come in quickly."
After Su Yue came in, she politely looked at Qin Zhizhi's grandmother and greeted her.
Qin Zhizhi's grandmother looked Su Yue up and down and praised, "So you're Fu Shen's wife. You're quite pretty. So Fu Shen's good days are yet to come. Zhizhi said you wanted to see me. What is it?"
Listening to Qin Zhizhi's grandmother speak, she sensed that she was a cheerful old lady, so Su Yue simply asked directly, "I want to ask you, was Fu Shen born in the village, or somewhere else?"
Qin Zhizhi's maternal grandmother was taken aback, but said without hesitation, "He wasn't born in the village."
Su Yue was overjoyed and couldn't contain her excitement. She took a step forward to Qin Zhizhi's grandmother and asked, "Where was he born? Was it in the town clinic or somewhere further away?"
Qin Zhizhi's grandmother frowned, as if she was thinking about something.
Qin Zhizhi was also intrigued by what she heard, and she and Su Yue waited quietly.
After a while, Qin Zhizhi's grandmother slowly said, "It shouldn't be in the town's clinic. I remember more than 20 years ago, Fu Liugen and Liu Xiuying went out to work for others. When they came back, they were carrying a child. That child was Fu Shen."
"When Fu Shen was little, he was chubby and fair-skinned. When the villagers saw him, they all said that Fu Liugen had struck it lucky. He hadn't had any children for several years after getting married, but he had such a handsome child. He had big eyes, and even though he was only two months old, he would show his gums when he saw people. Some people were jealous and said that he wasn't Fu Liugen's child. But Fu Liugen and his wife proved with facts that Fu Shen was indeed his and Liu Xiuying's child. Liu Xiuying didn't have breast milk, so Fu Liugen spent a lot of money to buy milk powder. It was genuine milk powder, not malted milk powder. He drank it until he was two years old. Tsk tsk, that's something rich people drink. They really spared no expense."
"Unfortunately, the good times didn't last long. When Fu Shen was four years old, Liu Xiuying got pregnant. Alas, Fu Shen's hard times began. Liu Xiuying was just pregnant. I've had nine children, eight of them sons, and three sons survived. I've never had a daughter as harsh on her as she is."
Su Yue and Qin Zhizhi were both stunned when they heard her say that she had given birth to nine children.
But Su Yue quickly realized that, after all, she was from this era and had seen many older people who had children every year, which was not an exaggeration.
She was surprised that out of so many children she had given birth to, only four had survived. She thought about how heartbroken Qin Zhizhi's grandmother must have been watching her children die.
"Do you know where Fu Shen's parents work?" Su Yue pressed.
Qin Zhizhi's maternal grandmother pondered for a moment: "It seems to be called Shencheng."
Shenzhen, Fu Shen.
After asking the questions, Su Yue and Qin Zhizhi went outside. Qin Zhizhi whispered, "You suspect that Fu Shen isn't his parents' biological son?"
Su Yue looked at Qin Zhizhi and said firmly, "It's not a doubt, it's just what I think. Your grandmother just said that Fu Shen's hard times started when he was four years old. She gave birth to eight sons, three of whom survived, but she never felt that being pregnant again was a remarkable thing, like Liu Xiuying did."
Qin Zhizhi: "..."
"It's not necessarily true that Fu Shen's hard times are just beginning; it doesn't mean he's not his biological son," Qin Zhizhi said doubtfully.
Su Yue shook her head. "You don't understand the reason. Don't tell your uncles about this. I'm going back now. It's time to make lunch."
Qin Zhizhi said, "Don't worry, I'll tell Grandma in a bit."
After Su Yue left, Qin Zhizhi turned around and went inside to talk to her grandmother.
