Chapter 894 Avoiding Suspicion

Zhou Yan continued, "Therefore, I will not actually apply for recusal, but publicly I will claim to be abiding by police rules to avoid unnecessary speculation and interference. But in critical moments, if you have any problems, you can report them to me, and I will step in to resolve them."

He turned to Explosive C and Ah K, and casually exhaled a smoke ring: "The reason I initially chose you two to lead this case is because I know what kind of people you are."

“Boom C, you're known throughout the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau for your fiery temper; you're quick to explode. Ah K, you may only be an officer, but your indomitable spirit is stronger than anyone else’s.”

"Both of you are fearless in the face of power and have no tolerance for injustice. I am very satisfied with your performance just now. I am at ease entrusting this case to you."

Both Bao C and A K had complex emotions written on their faces, a mixture of shock, emotion, and guilt.

Zhou Yan patted Bao C on the shoulder and grinned roguishly: "Go ahead and investigate! Investigate however you want, don't worry about me! If there are any obstacles, just tell me. If you can't touch the people, I'll do them! I won't interfere with your investigation process, I only want the results!"

C and K saluted excitedly in unison: "YES! SIR!"

Zhou Yan glanced at his somewhat embarrassed subordinates, a cynical smile playing on his lips: "As for you guys, you've shown me that I always have brothers supporting me. Tonight at Treasure Pavilion, it's my treat!"

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief and cheered instantly.

I guess I made the right choice by following a rich boss!

The boss is rich and powerful, and he dares to mess with anyone. Why not follow him and live a life of luxury?

C winked at K and whispered, "See? I told you Zhou Sir wasn't that kind of person, didn't I? You're overthinking it, you idiot!"

Ah K scratched his head and chuckled, "I misunderstood Inspector Zhou. I'll punish myself with three drinks tonight!"

...

Just as he had dismissed his subordinates, a phone rang.

Evan's voice came through the phone: "Zhou Yan, come to my office."

Zhou Yan raised an eyebrow, casually tossed the documents in his hand onto the table, and lazily walked toward Evan's office.

As soon as Zhou Yan entered, he leaned against the door frame and greeted Evan in a flippant tone: "Good morning, Uncle Evan."

Then, he plopped down in the chair opposite Evan's desk, crossed his legs, and slumped lazily against the back of the chair.

Ironically, this hooligan-like demeanor carried an air of untamed elegance about him.

Evan frowned as he looked at Zhou Yan, who was dressed in denim.

As a true British gentleman, he really disliked the work clothes made of cowboys, which were considered low-class workwear.

What I disliked even more was Zhou Yan's playboy demeanor, which he had developed while studying and working in the United States—rude, frivolous, and undisciplined, he had no trace of the air of a senior police superintendent.

Evan slammed his pen down, his tone clearly displeased.

“Zhou Yan, we are a disciplined force. You are a senior superintendent and do not need to go on duty. The rule for working is that you must wear a white shirt and police uniform, and wear a police hat. Your conduct is outrageous!”

Zhou Yan nodded nonchalantly, resting his chin on his hand: "Last night I played some uniform play with two girls, and then I sent them to the laundry."

Evan was furious: "You don't need to tell me this kind of thing! You bastard!"

Zhou Yan: "Alright, my LORD, my respected lord, is there something important you need me for?"

Evan frowned and said irritably, "Do you know about the case of the murder of the auditor at RAB Bank in Malaysia?"

Zhou Yan replied casually, "I know, it's with me. What? Uncle Evan is interested in this kind of case too?"

Evan frowned and said, "From now on, this case will no longer be under the jurisdiction of the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau. You need to get out of here immediately and avoid suspicion."

Zhou Yan raised an eyebrow: "Why? My men have already started investigating. Besides, this case is one where I can't avoid suspicion, which is why I have to take it on. Otherwise, would I really let someone else investigate that idiot Chen Jingsong?"

He narrowed his eyes, and the nonchalant expression on his face vanished instantly, replaced by a sinister, murderous look.

"That damned Chen Jingsong, he's good for nothing but causing trouble! He couldn't even pick a smarter way to silence someone. Now the vice president of RAB Bank in Malaysia has personally flown over to report it to the police, causing such a huge mess!"

“It’s not like I’ve appeased them; now the entire Hong Kong government’s press knows! How can I let this case go? Let the Commercial Crime Bureau investigate? If they find anything wrong, won’t you and I be the first ones implicated?”

Evan's face was grim. He knew, of course, that Chen Jingsong was unreliable, but it was too late to say anything now.

Evan frowned: "Ayan, your relationship with Chen Jingsong is too obvious. The ICAC may already be targeting him and you because of this case."

Zhou Yan sneered: "Ha, the ICAC? They handle corruption and murder cases?"

Evan frowned: "That's an area I can't really get my hands on. This is a commercial crime case, and they have every reason to get involved. What's more troublesome is that the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has a complex membership, and there might be 'mainland guests' involved."

Zhou Yan's face instantly darkened to the point where it looked like it could drip water.

He suddenly closed his eyes, and when he opened them again, his eyes were filled with suppressed anger and disgust. He kicked the table hard!

"Tsk, I told you from the start, don't fucking get engaged to Annie! Why did you have to do all this mess? Now look what happened!"

Anger flashed in Evan's eyes, and his face grew increasingly grim, but after all, he was the one who had orchestrated this, so he also bore some responsibility.

He rubbed his throbbing temples and said wearily, "Ayan, I only did it to appease Chen Jingsong back then. He knew we were close. Now it seems he just wanted to tie us all to his ship, which is why he asked you to get engaged to Cha Meiling!"

"But what's the use of saying all this now? The most important thing right now is that you absolutely cannot get involved!"

Zhou Yan's lips curled into a mocking smile: "Trying to distance yourself now? Too late! Since you've already heard the news, the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is probably already keeping an eye on me."

He stood up and said coldly, "Starting today, I will publicly declare that I will not interfere in cases in accordance with the recusal system and will apply for leave."

“But I have already arranged for someone to take over this case. I will monitor the progress of the case throughout. I will also try to appease the RAB bank headquarters.”

Hearing Zhou Yan's methodical arrangements, Evan frowned but felt much more at ease.

But the next moment, he looked at him, a sinister smile curving his lips—

"But before that, Uncle Evan, you need to arrange for me to have a good 'talk' with that bastard Chen Jingsong. I need to find out exactly what he did and whether it will implicate us!"
