Chapter 92 The Pretentious Boss Rong

Upon hearing this, Ning Yuan immediately and attentively used her chopsticks to pry open Chen Chen's hand and placed the other pheasant leg he was about to pick up into Rong Zhaonan's bowl.

"I knew that Comrade Rong Zhaonan was a good comrade who knew how to repay kindness."

Hey, it was worth it for her to protect him so many times back in the village!

The investment is finally showing initial returns! Her investment acumen is indeed excellent; Boss Rong is a high-potential stock with great potential for returns!

Chen Chen glanced at his empty chopsticks and looked at Ning Yuan with some dissatisfaction.

He rarely gets to eat a good meal, unlike the team leader in the countryside who enjoys delicacies every day, pampered by his wife and even stealing his pheasant legs!

But Ning Yuan glared at him the next moment, and he went to look at his captain, wanting the chicken leg back... Never mind, he dared not look at that.

Chen Chen reluctantly picked up the spicy and sour rabbit meat cubes from the side.

Rong Zhaonan looked at the pheasant leg that Ning Yuan had picked up in his bowl and ate his meal in a good mood.

Ning Yuan watched as Comrade Rong Zhaonan ate the chicken leg with great elegance—first removing the meat from the bone, then chewing slowly and carefully.

She was a little puzzled and jokingly asked the question she had been wanting to ask: "Rong Zhaonan, I've always noticed how elegant you are when you eat. Did you ever manage to get food in the army? If you eat like this on a mission, what will you do if there's a sudden combat mission?"

In my memory, during military training, there were time limits for meals, and sometimes we would be eating when there was an emergency assembly!

Before Rong Zhaonan could answer, Chen Chen started stuffing meat into his mouth while muttering, "Anyone who dares to take it from him will get beaten up by him. Everyone just lets him get his food first..."

Rong Zhaonan glanced at Chen Chen.

Unfortunately, Chen Chen had just had his chicken leg stolen and was sullenly eating his rice.

"Don't let his refined eating manners and small mouth fool you, he can eat incredibly fast, like a monster who eats people without spitting out bones. I don't know why he suddenly... started acting like... oh, right, showing off... Aaaaaah!!"

Before Chen Chen could finish showing off the new loanwords he had learned today, his voice trailed off with a cry of pain and a series of groans!

"Why so much talk over a meal? Is the chef at the guesthouse not very good at cooking?" Rong Zhaonan looked at him and smiled gently.

Chen Chen's eyes twitched as he tried desperately to pull back the foot his captain was stepping on from under the table: "No, no!!"

He was wrong. He shouldn't have revealed the team leader's secrets in front of his sister-in-law. Now his leg is ruined!

"Oh...cough cough, let's eat, let's eat." Ning Yuan suppressed her laughter, buried her head in her food, and didn't look at Rong Zhaonan's white ears, which had turned bright red.

Seeing Ning Yuan trying to suppress her laughter, Rong Zhaonan took a breath and coldly glanced at Chen Chen: "I'm going to pick up two people. Eat your food, and stop talking nonsense."

Chen Chen understood the subtext of the captain's warning—if you keep babbling, I'll knock your dog mouth off!

He pulled back his aching foot and said, on the verge of tears, "Oh, I'll eat, I'll eat!"

Ning Yuan looked at the door with some curiosity. Rong Zhaonan had been trapped in the countryside for several years, and this was his first time entering the county town. How could he know someone here? Who was he looking for?

As Rong Zhaonan stepped out the door, he saw two men of medium height, in their early thirties, walking towards him from the other end of the deserted street.

One of them was wearing ordinary work clothes, and the other was wearing cadre clothes, but as soon as they saw Rong Zhaonan, they both straightened their legs and gave a standard military salute: "Captain!"

“I’ve already said I’m not the captain anymore, and this isn’t the brigade headquarters, so it wouldn’t be appropriate for people to see this,” Rong Zhaonan said calmly.

The two exchanged a glance, knowing that although their captain had resumed his work, he wasn't going back for some reason. But since he had said so, they would naturally listen to their boss!

The older man in the cadre uniform asked in a low voice, "Captain, who else do you need to investigate? Just tell me."

They had already met that afternoon, and the captain had asked him to look up some things, which he did well.

Rong Zhaonan patted his shoulder with a wistful expression: "Let's leave it at that for now, as for the capital..."

“No one on the other side will know about your actions; we have our own dedicated lines,” the man in cadre attire said immediately.

Rong Zhaonan smiled with satisfaction: "Have you had dinner? Come in with me to meet someone?"

Both of them said they had already eaten, but they wanted to sit down with their captain and catch up.

Ning Yuan was halfway through her meal when she saw Rong Zhaonan leading two people in.

Rong Zhaonan noticed the curiosity in Ning Yuan's big eyes and simply introduced them: "These are Lao Ye and Lao Xu. Lao Ye works at the Grain Bureau, and Lao Xu works in a classified unit. They are both retired from our brigade and are old comrades-in-arms."

When introducing Lao Xu's position in the classified unit, he subtly observed Ning Yuan's expression.

If they were enemies with a special mission, they would probably be very interested in Lao Xu.

But Ning Yuan didn't show any particular expression, nor did she seem particularly interested.

She paused for a moment, then quickly stood up, a blush creeping onto her round face. She said apologetically, "I'm sorry, I didn't know you were coming. I'll go ask the kitchen to add a few more dishes!"

Old Xu, dressed in a cadre's uniform, smiled and extended his hand to her: "No need, we've already eaten. You must be my sister-in-law, right?"

Ning Yuan quickly rubbed the oil off her fingers with a handkerchief and shook hands with Lao Xu and Lao Ye respectively.

Upon seeing the newcomers, Chen Chen lost his appetite for the rabbit meat in his mouth. He wiped his mouth, stood up, and gave them an excited bear hug.

"Hey, you two are actually in this county too! The team leader didn't even tell me you were both assigned to work here!"

Old Xu sighed and patted Chen Chen on the shoulder: "The team leader has been sent down to our county's villages and towns for years, and he didn't tell us. Otherwise, at least we would have been able to look after him and not make him work so hard."

"Exactly!" Old Ye nodded vigorously, his eyes welling up with tears.

Everyone knew that the situation was bad in previous years. Rong Zhaonan was demoted but no one said anything, because they were afraid that his old comrades would stand up for him and cause trouble!

Having fought side by side, risking their lives together, how could they not know that the captain is cold on the outside but warm on the inside!

Now the hardship is over, everything is in the past, order has been restored, and things will get better!

Seeing his old comrades huddled together, a complex yet gentle smile flashed in Rong Zhaonan's clear, narrow eyes.

Ning Yuan saw this and secretly slipped another eight yuan and a ticket to Master Liu.

This was a private overtime payment and money for food; I asked him to find a way to spare two bottles of wine and a few more dishes.

Soon, the dishes and wine were served.

Ning Yuan's thoughtfulness was noticed by Lao Xu and Lao Ye, who smiled appreciatively and said, "Thank you, sister-in-law."

In the military, the capable are kings, and the wives of captains they acknowledge, no matter how young, are considered sisters-in-law.

Ning Yuan felt a little embarrassed and glanced at Rong Zhaonan with some unease. Was this a reunion with a former comrade-in-arms?

Why did he introduce her to his comrades? Their marriage was a sham. Shouldn't the fewer people who know he's married, the better?

At least if we break up in the future, it shouldn't affect him too much.
