Chapter 119 Returning Home, Encountering Ren Mingzhu

Seeing that Lin Shanshan was about to get angry, Gu Yiye quickly put his hand down and said, "We can go back in a couple of days. I'll make it for you when we get home."

Lin Shanshan's attention was diverted, and she stopped arguing with Gu Yiye, saying, "Well, that's about it. Xiaoxiang and Yuzhang are major rice-growing provinces, and also the provinces most severely affected by the disaster. Our strength is limited, so we'll save as many as we can."

Seeing Lin Shanshan's melancholy expression, Gu Yiye comforted her, "Little wife, don't be upset. Take it one step at a time, everything will be alright. Come on, let's go back and cook something delicious."

On his way back to the educated youth settlement, Gu Yiye encountered his second uncle and aunt in the fields.

Gu Yiye stopped the car and called out, "Second Uncle, Second Aunt, I went to the mountains to dig up bamboo shoots, pick mushrooms, and even caught two pheasants. Today I'll show you what I can do."

My second uncle was in a slightly better mood today, and there was no longer any anxiety on his face. He said, "Okay, we'll eat at noon. Now you can go to the place from yesterday and eat the mixed rice noodles here."

My second aunt walked from the edge of the field to the car, got in, and said, "Yes, I'll take you there, and bring Guorong a bowl while I'm at it."

Gu Yiye nodded and started the car.

Lin Shanshan asked, "Second Aunt, why are only you and Second Uncle in the fields today?"

Second Aunt said, "The other comrades went to other brigades. It rained yesterday, and everyone is busy now. We don't have many people, so they've all been sent down."

"Ah Ye's words are truly blessed! They work like magic! They said it would rain, and it rained right away! We're really grateful for this rain; at least this county can be self-sufficient now."

"For other regions, the central government can only use its grain reserves for disaster relief!"

As my aunt said this, she closed her eyes as if dozing, her face showing exhaustion. It was clear that my uncle and aunt had indeed put in a lot of effort to cope with this drought.

Lin Shanshan stopped talking and gestured for Gu Yiye to drive slowly so that her second aunt could rest in the car for as long as possible.

But no matter how slowly you drive, you'll still arrive eventually, especially since the journey is indeed too short.

A dozen minutes later, Gu Yiye parked the car steadily in the yard where he had come from the previous night.

Second Aunt opened her eyes and got out of the car with Gu Yiye and Lin Shanshan.

After getting off the bus, there was an uncle in the courtyard, who should be the Party Secretary of the Tenth Brigade. When he saw Xie Dongmei, he warmly greeted her and said, "Comrade Xie, the mixed rice noodles are ready. Please have a seat and I will bring them up."

Xie Dongmei said, "Thank you, Secretary Zhang."

Secretary Zhang smiled warmly and said, "It's nothing, no need to thank me. The village doesn't have much to offer, so you'll have to make do with rice noodles."

Xie Dongmei and the other two sat on benches in the courtyard and said, "Mixed rice noodles are a specialty of Yuzhang, they're very good!"

Secretary Zhang smiled even more broadly, and without replying, went into the kitchen to get the noodles.

Last night's rain saved the crops in the fields, and the villagers wouldn't go hungry, which made him happy.

The mixed rice noodles contained meat, peanuts, chili peppers, and homemade sprouts; it looked delicious.

After the three of them finished eating the noodles, the second aunt brought a bowl to the second uncle to take over, and Secretary Zhang also went along.

Gu Yiye escorted the two to the fields, then returned to the educated youth settlement to prepare a meal. Lin Shanshan yawned and went to her room for a nap.

After getting pregnant, the baby in my belly wasn't fussy, but just slept much more than usual.

Wild pheasants don't have as much meat as domesticated ones, but luckily we had two, plus lots of mushrooms, so we could make a big pot of it.

The bamboo shoots have a slightly bitter taste, so Gu Yiye scalded them with boiling water to ensure that his young wife would only taste the freshness of the bamboo shoots and not any bitterness.

By the time Gu Yiye finished cooking, his second uncle and aunt had returned; the other comrades must have had lunch in other brigades.

Lin Shanshan got up when she smelled the aroma, washed up, and then sat down to eat.

Two dishes for four people, but the portions are huge, so you don't have to worry about not getting enough to eat.

Second Uncle picked up a piece of chicken, took a few bites, his eyes welled up with tears, and said, "Ah Ye, this tastes just like the chicken my eldest brother used to make."

Blood ties are truly mysterious things. Even though Gu Yiye had never met his father, he could cook dishes that tasted almost exactly like his father's.

Auntie smiled and said, "Guorong, Aye and Shanshan have finally come all this way. Let's talk about something happy."

Ren Guorong and his wife thought that Gu Yiye and Lin Shanshan had come specifically to see them.

Uncle blinked and said, "Yes, I'm so happy to see my nephew and niece-in-law. It's raining today, so I'm a little excited."

Auntie smiled and said, "Aye, Shanshan, your second uncle and I didn't bring much with us. We'll prepare a gift for you when we go back to Haishi for the New Year."

Lin Shanshan smiled and said, "Second Aunt, you're too kind."

The group finished lunch amidst laughter and conversation. The second uncle and aunt didn't rest at noon either, preparing to discuss with the brigade secretary how to store water.

Gu Yiye called out to his second uncle, saying, "Second Uncle, Second Aunt, Shanshan and I are getting ready to go back to Anfeng Brigade."

Although my second uncle was reluctant to see me go, he was there to work, so he didn't linger. He simply said, "Okay. Be careful on the road. We'll have a proper chat when our family is reunited during the New Year."

After saying goodbye to his second uncle and aunt, Gu Yiye and Lin Shanshan wandered around for two more days. After two days of artificial rain, they finally returned to Yongzheng Commune on the third day.

First, he went to the commune to send a telegram to his third uncle, telling him that he and Shanshan wanted to return to Haishi.

After sending the telegram, Gu Yiye drove back to Anfeng Brigade.

As they approached the village entrance, Gu Yiye said, "Little wife, take the grass carp out of your space, and get some of your favorite vegetables as side dishes. I'll make you boiled fish when we get home."

Lin Shanshan smiled and said, "Brother Gu, you still remember?"

Gu Yiye replied, "I remember everything about you. Hey, little wife, don't you think those two people look a lot like Ren Mingzhu and Zhang Xiaolan?"

Lin Shanshan looked closely and realized that they were her two classmates.

But why did they come to Anfeng Brigade?
