Chapter 148 could no longer satisfy Secretary Kim's appetite.
"We'll talk about it later." Liu Nian looked around. There were still quite a few people standing in the distance, and some of them were waving to them.
Liu Nian and Su Xu smiled at the visitors and dealt with them. Then they quickly pulled Lin Meizhi aside and said, "Let's go to my mother's house first."
The three of them walked forward in a hurry.
Liu Hua was already standing at the gate waiting. As soon as she saw Liu Nian walking over with the child, she couldn't wait and ran over, "Oh, my little darling!"
"Mom, let's go inside first." Liu Nian patted Liu Hua on the back. Liu Hua looked at their expressions and knew they must have something to say, so she quickly turned to the side.
Once inside, Liu Hua was playing with the child, while Liu Nian pulled Lin Meizhi aside.
Lin Meizhi, holding back her tears, said, "I went to see Secretary Jin today and told him that I promised to fulfill his request on the fifth day of the Lunar New Year."
"But to my surprise, Secretary Jin acted out of character, saying that I was talking nonsense and trying to seduce him and make him break the rules! He also said that my admission notice was not in his possession at all!"
Lin Meizhi panicked, "Isn't this strange?"
“He clearly said a few days ago that as long as I agree to his request, I can go to university.”
Liu Nian and Su Xu frowned as they listened to Lin Meizhi's tearful account.
Secretary Jin said this so that he could gain even greater benefits; otherwise, why would he give up the fat meat that was already in his mouth?
It is very likely that Secretary Jin reached some consensus with someone not long ago. Otherwise, when facing Lin Meizhi, he could have just made up an excuse to get by.
"Sister Nian, what should we do?" Lin Meizhi cried anxiously.
"Don't rush," Liu Nian gestured for Lin Meizhi to calm down. It was especially important at this time that she couldn't lose her composure.
“We need to find out who the other party is first.” Liu Nian’s expression was cold. After thinking for a moment, he said, “Try to get closer to Secretary Jin again and see if he is not satisfied and wants to get something else from you, or if he has really reached some agreement with someone to have someone take your place in college.”
Lin Meizhi nodded and said, "Okay, I understand."
She gritted her teeth, her face resolute. If she couldn't go to university, she would hang herself! Anyway, there was no point in living anymore.
Lin Meizhi walked out of Liu Hua's house with a heavy heart. Liu Hua watched her retreating figure and sighed, "That Secretary Jin is truly a sin!"
"Alright, stop thinking about it. I'm stewing goose for you in a big pot. Wash your hands and have a taste later." Liu Hua said, turning around and happily going to look at the three babies again.
"Grandma's little darling!"
"Where's Dawei?" Liu Nian looked around but didn't see his brother and sister-in-law's child.
Just then, a little dumpling came out from the inner room, wobbling as it held up its clothes, its bottom bare, and said, "Grandma, it's cold."
Liu Hua slapped her forehead and quickly ran over, "Grandma, how could you have forgotten about me?"
She had just dressed Dawei, put on a shirt, and then went to add fuel to the stove, and then forgot about it.
The little one pursed his lips, looking aggrieved, but didn't cry. Tears welled up in his eyes, making him look especially pitiful.
"Come on, Dawei, don't cry. Auntie will take you to the market later!" Liu Nian quickly went over and helped Dawei get dressed.
David then wiped his eyes and laughed.
Liu Hua stayed home to look after the children, while Su Xu took Liu Nian and Dawei to the market, spending all the grain coupons, cloth coupons, and meat coupons he had.
They bought ribs by the rack, and also a wide variety of side dishes, leaving everyone around them speechless.
Unlike them, who only have so little to offer and are preparing for the New Year in such a meager manner.
That's truly enviable.
"They have money, they don't care!"
"Just because you have money doesn't mean you can spend it like that! What if you spend it all? Isn't that wasteful?"
Someone muttered to themselves, looking at the two ounces of meat in their hand, and angrily turned and left.
People like that are just envious and jealous, and Liu Nian can't be bothered to pay them any attention.
Su Xu would carry what he could carry, and for what he couldn't, he would pay extra to have it delivered directly to their homes, which they were naturally happy to do.
"Lin Meizhi, wait for me!" the little girl in front called out, holding up a candied hawthorn.
Liu Nian quickly looked up and saw that she was still holding Dawei's hand. Dawei kept walking forward, so Liu Nian had to look back every step of the way.
The person called Lin Meizhi, wearing a blue coarse cotton coat, stood in the crowd, clearly somewhat impatient.
"You'd better leave now! I have things to do!"
This person was not the Lin Meizhi that Liu Nian knew. She had a fierce look in her eyes and turned to leave without waiting for the people behind her.
Liu Nian frowned as he watched her retreating figure.
"What are you looking at?" Su Xu walked over carrying his things. Liu Nian looked away and said, "I'll tell you when we get home."
Dawei happily went home with his candied hawthorn in hand. Liu Hua, seeing how much stuff Liu Nian had bought, exclaimed in shock, "You brought everything from the market home?"
"Isn't this for the New Year?" Liu Nian divided the food in two, giving some to Liu Hua so she could eat it with her brother and sister-in-law during the New Year.
When Zhang Suzhen, Liu Qiang, and Liu Dafa returned home, the whole family happily ate and drank together.
Because Liu Nian was preoccupied, she didn't eat much at all.
As soon as she got home, Liu Nian couldn't wait to tell Su Xu, "I met Lin Meizhi at the market today."
“It’s not Lin Meizhi, the educated youth, you understand?” Liu Nian frowned and said, “I need to check how many Lin Meizhis actually took the college entrance examination.”
If they really do share the same name, that would be so easy to do.
Therefore, Liu Nian made a special trip to the Education Bureau the next day, but the list of college entrance examination results still hanging there had not been taken down.
Liu Nian looked at the densely packed names on the page, reading them one by one.
Sure enough, Liu Nian saw another name, Lin Meizhi, on the last few ranking lists.
Lin Meizhi scored over 300 points, which is enough for her to get into an undergraduate university.
But the other Lin Meizhi only scored around 100 points, so she had no chance of getting into a good university.
I don't know if Liu Nian's guess is correct.
What a coincidence! She just happened to run into another Lin Meizhi at the market? The coincidence made Liu Nian wonder.
