This is what she is most satisfied with: she doesn't have to marry outside the family and doesn't have to be isolated and helpless.
"Okay, that's great!" Liu Dayong chuckled. "From now on, we'll all live happily ever after!"
Looking at her family, then at Su Xu and the three babies, Liu Nian felt incredibly happy.
Liu Nian seemed to have forgotten all the suffering from her previous life.
Firecrackers went off, dumplings were put into the pot, Liu Nian pushed the pot, watching the plump white dumplings tumbling and steam rising, but it still couldn't hide her smiling face.
After having their New Year's Eve dinner, Liu Nian and Su Xu returned home. Su Xu specially lit a few firecrackers at their doorstep.
The sound was deafening, soaring into the sky.
"May the coming year be prosperous and successful!" Su Xu made a wish while looking at the firelight, "May Niannian always be by my side."
This was their first time spending the New Year together. Liu Nian nestled in Su Xu's arms, and Su Xu gently stroked her hair.
The two remained silent, embracing tightly. In the distance were children: one with wide, staring eyes, another whimpering, and a third with a cool, narrowed gaze.
Liu Nian was content with this kind of life, which was both mundane and peaceful.
...
The next morning, before dawn, every household opened their doors early, stood at the door to greet their neighbors across the street for the New Year, and then hurried home to eat and change into new clothes.
Liu Nian laid out the candy and melon seeds. The three children were wearing bright red cloak-like coats today, and their chubby little faces were pink and tender, like dolls from a New Year's painting.
After finishing their meal, Liu Nian and Su Xu quickly took the children to pay New Year's visits.
The first family was the Liu family. Liu Hua and Zhang Suzhen each handed over three large red envelopes. Liu Nian naturally also prepared one for his nephew Dawei, a thick stack of red envelopes.
"Why did you give him so much!" Zhang Suzhen exclaimed anxiously, and tried to return it to Liu Nian.
"Sister-in-law, I didn't give it to you." Liu Nian snatched it away and stuffed it back into Dawei's arms. "Take it! Auntie gave it to me!"
The little guy said in his childish voice, "Okay, I'll save it for when I get married!"
These words made all the adults laugh. Liu Nian teased him, saying, "Do you even know what it means to get married?"
David tilted his head and said earnestly, "Once I get married, I can raise children!"
"Haha! That's right!" Liu Hua laughed heartily. "When Dawei grows up, he'll find a beautiful wife!"
Zhang Suzhen chuckled, "Silly boy."
I spent the whole morning visiting relatives and friends to offer New Year's greetings. Jiangjuntun is a large place, and after walking around the whole area, I was exhausted.
So Su Xu drove the tractor and took his family to visit other people's homes.
A group of women watched enviously as Su Xu drove the tractor, pulling Liu Nian and the Liu family along.
People are envious, and they're tired too, but they don't have the means.
"Liu Nian is so lucky. She's capable, her man dotes on her, and she even gave birth to three at once! I'm so envious."
"Just watch, the triplets' one-month celebration will be a huge success. Guess how many tables they'll have?"
“In the past, when a big landlord’s child had a full moon celebration, there were at most twenty tables. Triplets couldn’t possibly have more than that.”
"That's true. He was the richest man in our county back then. Liu Nian probably couldn't compare."
People made these guesses, but when the day came, they were utterly astonished.
There were a full thirty-five tables! A feast for the whole village! Whether or not to give money was irrelevant; the important thing was to say a few auspicious words to the children, just for good luck. It seems Liu Nian didn't care about money at all!
Secretary Jin, however, had already eagerly entered the air-raid shelter...
