Chapter 17 Jealousy for the sake of romance, got it? (2/2)

His voice was deep and pleasant to hear, gently reaching Liu Nian's ears, both warm and alluring.

"I only want you." Su Xu looked at the little woman's snow-white nape and licked his lips.

"All you do is say nice things!" Liu Nian snorted and turned her head away.

She chuckled softly and suddenly leaned against the man.

"Who's prettier, the two of us?" Liu Nian's eyes and brows were charming and delicate, like they held a pool of clear spring water, and she stared straight at him.

Staring at the ground, he saw only her, as if everything else in the world had ceased to exist.

Su Xu stammered, "You're beautiful, you're the most beautiful."

Liu Nian couldn't help but laugh, but then she straightened her face and said, "I'm jealous for the sake of romance, understand?"

"I understand." Su Xu smiled, pursing his lips. "I'm glad you can be jealous."

"It means you care about me," Su Xu didn't dare say it aloud, but his eyes shone brightly, almost frighteningly so.

The two ate together sweetly, making those around them envious.

Liu Xiangxiang believed that she and Su Hang had a free and loving relationship. However, Su Hang didn't ask her if she had eaten, and started eating on his own, even complaining that there was no meat in the meal.

"Look at what other people are eating! What am I eating?" Su Hang angrily threw the cornbread into his lunchbox and glared at Liu Xiangxiang.

"If it weren't for you, would I be suffering like this?" Su Hang glanced at Liu Nian from afar, gritted his teeth, and clearly regretted marrying Liu Xiangxiang.

Liu Xiangxiang's expression changed, and she retorted, "You're actually blaming me?"

"If things go smoothly in the haunted house, I'll marry Liu Nian! And I, Su Hang, will be the one eating the chicken leg right now!" Su Hang said irritably.

He secretly sized up Liu Nian. With her slender waist, red lips, and white teeth, she didn't look like a girl from a farming family; she seemed more like a pampered city lady. He licked his lips, somewhat annoyed. How had he ever been attracted to Liu Xiangxiang in the first place?

Liu Xiangxiang followed Su Hang's gaze and clenched her fists tightly.

Liu Xiangxiang angrily slammed the lid on the lunchbox. "You have to be careful with money when you're making a living. A woman like her who doesn't know how to manage money will ruin the family sooner or later!"

She deliberately shouted loudly, attracting the attention of everyone around her.

These days, it's considered a huge deal if a family can even get a taste of meat, but Liu Nian actually ate a whole roasted chicken!

A group of men smacked their lips on the pickled vegetables in their mouths, and the more they smacked, the more sour they felt inside.

"Hmph, if my wife were this wasteful, I'd break her legs!"

"Just you wait, in a few days we'll be starving."

"That's right!" Seeing several people speaking up for her, Liu Xiangxiang was extremely proud and chimed in, "The women in the farmyard are all hardworking. If they can't lift their hands or carry anything, how will they work in the fields?"

"They don't know how to manage a household yet."

Liu Xiangxiang packed up her lunchbox and turned to leave.

Liu Nian patted his behind, stood up, walked up to her, and said sarcastically, "Don't worry, I definitely won't starve, because I'm destined for that!"

Liu Nian glanced at Liu Xiangxiang lightly and scoffed.

Liu Xiangxiang's face turned pale instantly; these words were a fatal blow to her. Shen Juan used to say every day that their family wasn't destined to enjoy a life of luxury, and that Liu Nian was lucky. Liu Xiangxiang resented this; these words were like a thorn in her heart, impossible to swallow or let go of. She felt a little better whenever Liu Nian was unhappy.

Liu Nian smiled gently as she watched Liu Xiangxiang awkwardly avoid her gaze. This was nothing compared to the pain Liu Xiangxiang had caused her in her past life—far more than just a few words.

The two sisters-in-law returned home one after the other. Liu Nian and Su Xu ate their fill together, but when Liu Xiangxiang got home, she found that Wang Xiuzhi hadn't waited for her at all, and she and Jin Qiaomei had barely left anything behind.

Liu Xiangxiang had no choice but to resignedly gnaw on the half-eaten pancake that Su Hang had left behind. Her own husband didn't care about her, and her mother-in-law didn't care either.

Tomorrow is her return visit to her parents' home, and Liu Nian is planning what to bring back. She has the things, but the problem is how to present them in a way that is appropriate for her.

In those days, even having money didn't guarantee you could buy things; you needed ration coupons. You could try exchanging them at the county's black market, but there wasn't enough time.

However, it is possible... Liu Nian stared blankly at the large iron basin in the house.

Liu Nian threw two pieces of clothing inside, grabbed her phone, and immediately went out.

The door creaked open, and Liu Xiangxiang, hearing the noise, immediately craned her neck. She thought about the roast chicken Liu Nian had for lunch—where did she get those food ration coupons? Maybe she was speculating!

Thinking this, Liu Xiangxiang tiptoed out the door, hoping to catch her red-handed!
