Chapter 1 Rebirth with Opened Eyes

The scorching sun beat down on the earth, so bright that it was hard to open one's eyes.

Su Yan knelt in the courtyard of the Su family's old house for an unknown amount of time, feeling parched and dizzy.

It was midday, and the scorching sun seemed to be baking her.

With her heavy eyelids tucked open, Su Yan struggled to take in everything before her.

The low, dilapidated tile-roofed house was in ruins, with peeling paint and uneven walls. The roof tiles were messy and missing corners.

The sounds of the argument grew clearer.

"This spot must be given to Su Zhi! What's the point of Su Yan, a little girl, going to school? She'll get married sooner or later anyway. It's better for our family to benefit from it than for someone else to benefit from it!"

"Grandpa! This spot was earned by my daughter Ayan because of her excellent grades. Su Zhi's grades are not even a tenth as good as Ayan's. You want him to replace Ayan? Do you think the school is so easy to fool?" The woman's voice was full of indignation.

"I have my own ways with the school. Anyway, school starts in September, and the person who goes will definitely be Su Zhi! It's settled then."

Grandpa Su, sitting on the kang (a heated brick bed), threw his pipe onto the table, then walked to the courtyard and looked at the kneeling person. He said earnestly, "Ayan, it's not that Grandpa doesn't want you to go to school, but even if you're a girl and have good grades, no matter how many books you read, you're not as good as a boy. Let Su Zhi go to university. As long as you agree not to cause trouble, I'll have your grandma give your house an extra five yuan every month. Is that alright?"

Before Su Yan could even figure out what was going on, she collapsed to the ground and fainted.

When she regained consciousness, all she saw was an unfamiliar, dark, tiled roof.

Where is this?

She slowly climbed up from the kang (a heated brick bed), and suddenly felt a sharp pain in her head.

Complex and unfamiliar memories kept intertwining in my mind.

She transmigrated to Sushan Village in 1980. The original owner of this body was also named Su Yan. Su Yan was the second daughter of the fifth branch of the Su family. She was eighteen years old this year. She had an older brother who was serving in the military and a younger brother. Her father was named Su Changcheng, a typical farmer. Her mother was named Li Juan, a worker in the town's tailor shop.

The reason the original owner was kneeling at noon was because she and Su Zhi, the eldest son of the Su family, took the college entrance examination at the same time. She had excellent grades and was admitted to Southern Medical University, while Su Zhi did terribly and couldn't even get into a junior college.

Grandpa Su has always favored his eldest grandson, and upon learning of this result, he immediately instructed Su Yan to give the university spot to Su Zhi.

The admission notice hadn't even arrived in Sushan Village yet. The Su family only knew about it because Grandpa Su had a connection with the town mayor.

After learning from the town mayor that Su Yan had been admitted, Grandpa Su came up with a plan. Since university admission notices are now handwritten, he could have Su Zhi change his name, or even forge one through connections. In short, Su Zhi had to get into university. The original owner of this body was a timid and tongue-tied person, and in order to go to school, she immediately knelt in the yard and refused to get up.

After receiving all the memories, Su Yan clutched the blanket tightly, her mentality on the verge of collapse!

She simply went home and took a nap after a social engagement, and when she woke up, she inexplicably found herself here!

In her previous life, she was of average appearance and worked hard until she was thirty, saving six million in savings. She finally achieved financial freedom, but before she could enjoy it, she was transported to the 1980s!

Su Yan's eyes were red with anger as she pounded on the flimsy wooden bed, her heart aching as she thought of her six million yuan savings!

What terrible things did she do in her past life?!

Why is God playing such a cruel joke on her?

"Squeak—"

The door was opened.

Then a small figure wobbled over, carrying a bowl. The figure was dressed in tattered clothes, but had bright, clear eyes that looked at her and asked, "Sister, are you still feeling unwell?"

This little boy is Su Lei, the original owner's younger brother. He is only five years old this year, and he and the original owner and her brother have always had a very good relationship.

Su Yan regained her composure, suppressed her emotions, and shook her head with a bitter face.

Su Lei handed over the bowl of steamed egg custard, swallowed hard, and forced back his craving, saying, "Sister, you eat it."

These days, eggs are still a rare commodity. Given Su Yan's family's impoverished circumstances, this bowl of steamed egg custard was probably made with the only egg they had at home.

Thinking of this, Su Yan felt even more upset, but forced a smile and said, "I'm not hungry. You're at the age where you're growing, so eat more."

Fearing the child might refuse, she immediately changed the subject: "I'm thirsty, go get me a glass of water."

She really had no appetite.

As soon as he finished speaking, a woman walked in, cursing and swearing.

"You old geezer! Do you really think our whole family are pushovers?"

After the woman finished scolding, she looked up and saw her daughter who had woken up. Her tone softened considerably: "Ayan, you must go to school. I'll sell everything I own to support you!"

This woman was Su Yan's mother, Li Juan, who had a fiery temper and was fiercely protective of her children.

She worked at a tailor shop in town, earning fifteen yuan a month, which should have been enough to support a college student.

But Grandma Su has to pay thirteen yuan every month, leaving her with only two yuan... It's really a struggle to support a college student.

Su Yan stared blankly at the woman in front of her for a long time before asking, "What does Father mean?"

The mere mention of this caused Li Juan to explode: "That muddle-headed bastard of yours actually agreed to let Su Zhi go to school in your place! Bah! He can dream on. As long as I'm here, those bastards won't even think about taking your place in college."

Upon hearing this, Su Yan felt a sudden pang of disappointment.

She knew that this was the original owner's emotion.

The original owner's father was an honest and kind man, but the unforgivable thing was that he was blindly filial to his parents, which was infuriating.
