The contract is made in triplicate.
One copy was held by the four of them, one by the captain, and one by Su Yan herself.
She folded the contract with satisfaction and then said to the team leader, "Team leader, could you please help me find someone to handle the leveling of the hill? I'll pay you when I get back, and you'll be responsible for supervising it. The wages will be five yuan a day, is that alright?"
The captain chuckled, “I’m just in charge of supervision, it won’t take much effort. Even though you’re rich now, you still need to be careful with your money and not be so stingy.”
"I know what I'm doing," Su Yan said, feigning displeasure. "Supervising this isn't easy, so I won't bother you if you don't agree."
One thing at a time, she left the matter to the brigade leader and acted as a hands-off manager, but she couldn't skimp on the money that was due.
Besides, if things really can grow on the hilltop, she will inevitably have to trouble the brigade leader.
“Even close brothers should keep clear accounts. Ah Yan doesn’t want to owe you too many favors, so don’t be so wishy-washy,” Lin Xiuli said.
The captain knew Su Yan's thoughts, so he stopped refusing and promised, "Alright, I will definitely handle this matter well. But, Su Yan, you should be mentally prepared and not take those two dry mountains too seriously."
That mountain is truly arid.
He had seen it with his own eyes: no matter how carefully the saplings were nurtured, they would eventually die.
Su Yan nodded. "I understand. After we level the hill, I'll hire two excavators to dig soil from the deeper mountains. The soil there is more moist, so we can fill it a bit thicker."
The captain said nothing more. "Then I'll go find you after the hill is leveled."
Su Yan responded, wrote down her current address for the captain, and then left with Jiang Jingxing.
Grandma Li and Grandpa Li had to stay behind to work on building the house, so they didn't go back with them.
After seeing the guests off, the captain finally spoke with a troubled expression: "Xiuli, do you think I should have stopped that girl?"
Su Yan hadn't personally witnessed the extent of the drought on the two mountains, but they knew about it.
Several hundred yuan is not a small amount.
Lin Xiuli glanced at him, lifting her eyelids slightly, and calmly said, "Her grandparents didn't say anything, so why are you, an outsider, saying so much? Su Yan herself doesn't care about this little bit of money, so why are you worrying about it?"
The captain took a sullen drag on his cigarette before saying, "I was just trying to think more about this girl's feelings."
"Su Yan isn't your child, so you don't need to worry about her," Lin Xiuli said irritably. "Your eldest son's family is waiting for you to take care of them. Why don't you worry about him instead?"
Ever since Li Dajun's leg was crippled, his wife has come over every three days to cause trouble, and she even brings the children to eat here for free.
It's fine for the kids to come over for a meal; after all, they're the grandparents, and they don't hold grudges against their grandchildren over such things.
But Lin Xiuli couldn't stand her eldest daughter-in-law's behavior, as if she were the most pitiful person in the world. Who was she trying to impress?
The captain was even more worried when his eldest son was mentioned.
...
"You rented that hilltop, really not because you wanted to help them?"
Upon arriving in town, Jiang Jingxing finally voiced his doubts.
The two mountains were indeed in the same condition as the brigade leader had described; they weren't good mountains, and the ground even had cracks.
Su Yan raised an eyebrow at him and said, "I'm not a saint, why should I help them? If they can grow the crops, I'll be happy; if not, forget it. A few hundred yuan is still within my budget."
The medicinal herbs she sold to Tang Li were not cheap, not to mention that thousand-year-old ginseng. She must have made a lot of money. Jiang Jingxing knew a little about it.
"Are you planning to come to Beijing with me this time?" he asked.
Su Yan thought about it seriously for a moment, but finally shook her head. "Never mind, I have things to do at home, and I can't finish explaining them in a short time. I'll just go according to the time on the ticket you bought for me."
He arrived in a hurry anyway, and now that he has found the medicinal herbs he needs, he definitely wants to get back as soon as possible.
Jiang Jingxing nodded. "Then call me before you leave, and I'll pick you up at the train station."
"You mean you're leaving now?" Su Yan asked in shock. "You arrived so late last night and got up so early today. Wouldn't it be dangerous to drive while fatigued if you didn't rest before leaving?"
“It used to be common for missions to last three days, so this is nothing. Don’t worry.” Jiang Jingxing finished speaking, checked the time, and continued, “It’s 2:30. I’ll probably arrive in Beijing around midnight if I drive there now.”
Su Yan knew he was worried about his grandfather's condition. "Then be careful. If you're too tired, find a place to take a nap before continuing your journey. I'll pack some food for you. You can eat on the road if you get hungry."
Without waiting for Jiang Jingxing's reply, she went into the kitchen.
Jiang Jingxing watched her busy figure, a warm glint flashing in his eyes.
A few minutes later, Su Yan came out of the kitchen carrying some things and said, "I packed two mooncakes, five steamed buns, two zongzi and two bottles of soda for you. That should be enough."
Jiang Jingxing washed his face and felt much more refreshed. He took the things from her hands and said, "That's enough. Go take a shower and rest. I'm leaving."
"Okay, drive carefully, I won't see you off."
She must have been exhausted from getting up so early.
Jiang Jingxing stared at her for a few seconds before finally picking up the basket and leaving.
He was tall and walked quickly, and the wind he blew carried a faint minty scent.
Su Yan was puzzled.
How come this man doesn't smell bad at all even when he's sweating? Is that one of the characteristics of a handsome man?
Soon, the sound of a car could be heard outside, until it disappeared.
She didn't dwell on it too much. She rummaged through the basket, moved the herbs aside, and then picked up the ginseng from the bottom of the basket and examined it closely in her palm.
The ginseng's roots were still covered in fresh soil, and the upper half seemed to have faint facial features, like a little old man with a full beard. The whole thing was a bit thicker than her arm, and there were many lines on its body, covered with the marks of time.
"Mmm!" Su Yan couldn't resist giving it a big kiss, treating it like a precious treasure. "I'm tying you to my room, you can't run away!"
When she has time, she should look into the situation of ginseng that is over 3,000 years old and see if she really got lucky.
If this ginseng in her hand really has such a long history, she would definitely treasure it as a family heirloom!
Su Yan put the ginseng back in the basket and covered it with other medicinal herbs, intending to take a shower before cleaning up the things, when suddenly there was a knock on the door.
Is anyone home?
"Snap—!"
Su Yan opened the door and saw the person standing outside. She frowned and thought for a moment before suddenly realizing, "Are you Aunt Wei who lives next door?"
The lights were off last night, so she couldn't get a clear look at Wei Xiaoyu's face.
Wei Xiaoyu smiled and said, "Yes, it's me. I didn't expect to see you at home. What a coincidence!"
