Chapter 150 Catching Fish in the River

The fields are planted with cotton that has grown to knee height.

Nearly ten years have passed since the land was distributed to individual households. Farmers no longer lack food, but relying solely on farming still provides very limited income.

Everyone has enough to eat and drink, but what spare money do they have?

Therefore, with the strong support of national and local government departments, cotton, as an economic crop, began to be widely planted in most parts of Jiaonan Province, and could earn a lot of money every year to support a family's living expenses.

Xiao Weiguo looked out the window at the vast expanse of cotton fields and silently made plans in his mind.

The cultivation of cotton spurred the emergence of many textile industries, such as small spinning mills, like the one where Xiao Jian used to work.

There are also some medium-sized textile enterprises of a certain scale, but as far as Xiao Weiguo knows, there are none that have truly formed an industrial chain and have full functionality.

Given this, why can't I integrate the functions of these companies, starting from the source to the product, and become a vertically integrated enterprise?

In this way, at least in the field of natural fibers, they have secured a place for themselves and formed an upstream and downstream relationship with their own clothing company, creating a very perfect industrial chain.

Of course, the clothing industry cannot rely solely on natural fibers; synthetic fibers are also an important component.

Otherwise, Xiao Weiguo wouldn't have gone to such lengths to bring down Ais Company. He didn't want to give up this piece of the pie to others, specifically, he didn't want to give it to foreigners.

He will definitely set up a chemical fiber company later, but he can't do it in Xiaotun.

As we all know, the chemical industry is destructive to the environment, and he doesn't want to ruin his hometown like it was in his previous life just for the sake of profit.

The car soon arrived at the small courtyard he knew so well.

The front door was locked, so Xiao Jian and Gao Hu were obviously not home.

I looked up at the small courtyard where I had lived for more than ten years.

Xiao Weiguo discovered that the previously dilapidated courtyard walls, and the collapsed parts, had all been repaired.

Although the newly added soil wasn't compacted neatly, and in some places looked like it had been chewed by a dog, it was clear that the people doing this work weren't very professional.

But it's much better than before; at least those naughty kids can't just flip over it anymore.

A woman was passing by when she saw Xiao Weiguo looking around. She stopped and called out to him.

"It's Wei Guo who's back."

Xiao Weiguo turned around and saw that it was his former neighbor, Gou Dan's mother, whom he should call Second Aunt.

"Second Aunt, are you busy? Have you seen Xiao Jian?"

My second aunt was carrying a clay pot for feeding chickens, clearly out chasing after her family's hens.

"I saw him and Xiaohuzi taking several fish traps south this morning, they must have gone to catch fish."

Auntie pointed south towards the small ditch and told Xiao Weiguo.

"Okay, thank you, Auntie. I'll go look for him."

"Hey, go ahead, come over to my house sometime."

My second aunt went to find her family's old hen.

Xiao Weiguo asked Jiao Bai to watch the car. If no one was around, the bunch of mischievous kids in the village wouldn't care if it was a luxury car or not; it would be normal for them to piss on it.

He walked alone out of the village, along the small ridges between the fields, towards the river.

The crops on both sides rustled in the wind. It was a bit hot, and Xiao Weiguo walked quickly, occasionally jumping over small ditches washed out by villagers irrigating their fields.

I hadn't gone very far when I was already covered in sweat.

He was wearing a sharp suit when he went out in the morning, but it was almost soaked through. He had to take off the suit and drape it over his arm, wearing only a white shirt on his upper body, before he felt much more comfortable.

Near Xiaotun, there is only this small stream, about ten meters wide. It doesn't have a name; everyone just calls it Jia Nan River.

The river isn't deep, usually only up to your knees. If it weren't for the water plants that grow there, you could see the bottom at a glance.

Xiao Weiguo walked along the riverbank for a short distance and saw Xiao Jian and Gao Hu busy doing something in the river.

He slowed his pace, put his hands in his pockets, and walked over slowly.

"Xiao Jian, Hu Zi."

Xiao Weiguo stood on the riverbank and called out.

The two people in the river stood up straight together.

Upon seeing him, Xiao Jian opened his mouth as if to call out to him, but no sound came out.

Gao Hu, on the other hand, waved to him and shouted.

"Brother Weiguo, we're catching fish, what brings you here?"

Xiao Weiguo walked down the grassy bank of the river to the water's edge, squatted down, and asked them.

"So, how many did you catch?"

In fact, Xiao Weiguo knew that the river was too shallow and there were hardly any big fish. People would come to catch them from time to time, so there wouldn't be many fish in the river. At most, there would only be some crucian carp the size of a palm and some whitebait.

Xiao Jian shook his head somewhat dejectedly, while Gao Hu said in a dejected tone.

“Xiao Jian and I set several traps early this morning, and when we took them out to check just now, there were only a few small fish.”

He pointed to a small bucket placed on the shore.

Xiao Weiguo craned his neck to take a look.

Sure enough, there were only about ten finger-length whitebait and three palm-sized crucian carp.

Xiao Weiguo didn't make fun of them. Instead, he smiled and said...

"That's quite a lot. Back then, when I brought Xiao Jian and Shan Shan to catch fish, we might not catch this much in a whole morning. We could cook a pot of fish soup and not even smell any fishy smell. And we still fought over the soup."

At this point, Xiao Jian, who had been silent until now, suddenly burst out laughing.

"Back then, all you did was lead us to aimlessly paddle around in the water; no wonder we couldn't catch any fish."
