Chapter 153 Extraordinary Talent

Xiao Weiguo shouted at Xiao Jian while rubbing his own feet.

"Put it there for now, I'll show you my skills in a bit."

He knew his younger brother had never been able to cook, and he was afraid that his brother would make a pot of raw fish soup that he himself couldn't eat.

In this regard, Xiao Jian was indeed not very confident. Upon hearing his elder brother's words, he dropped what he was doing and went to do something else.

Xiao Weiguo cleaned the fish and went into the kitchen, where he found that the tableware and seasonings were quite complete.

It looks like it was delivered by Shanshan and her friends; I doubt those two young boys could have thought of such a thorough thing.

Gao Hu had nothing else to do, so he came in to help Xiao Weiguo start the fire.

Xiao Weiguo rolled up his sleeves, picked up the available ingredients, and quickly made four dishes.

A delicious wild crucian carp soup and a plate of deep-fried small whitebait. Don't be fooled by their large size; they're all meat. Coated in flour and deep-fried until crispy, they're incredibly delicious!

I made a cold salad of watercress that Xiao Jian and his friend had dug up from the field, and also stir-fried some shredded potatoes.

As Gao Hu tended the fire, he watched Xiao Weiguo's smooth and skillful actions, his eyes filled with undisguised envy and amazement.

He and Xiao Jian had caught fish a few times before. The basic procedure after catching them was to clean them, throw them all into a pot, add water, seasonings as they pleased, and let the taste be whatever they were made of. Sometimes they were so good that they could make do with what they had.

Looking at Xiao Weiguo's actions, they were orderly and methodical. He knew exactly when to release what, a skill that Gao Hu considered an art.

In his opinion, no one has ever been able to cook a meal with such rhythm.

Without even trying it, the aroma of it fresh out of the pot was enough to make his mouth water.

"Brother Xiao, your cooking skills are simply amazing."

Gao Hu gave a thumbs-up, indicating that he was completely convinced.

"Practice makes perfect. With more practice, you can do it too."

Xiao Weiguo spoke modestly, but in his heart he was somewhat proud of his cooking skills.

"Sigh, I really need to practice more, otherwise it's not a good idea for us to just boil vegetables every day."

Looking at the several delicious-looking dishes on the stove, and then thinking about what he usually ate with Xiao Jian, Gao Hu felt a bitter taste in his mouth.

The food was served on a stone platform under the jujube tree, and the group gathered around it, happily eating.

"Brother, when did you learn this skill?"

Xiao Jian was clearly amazed by Xiao Weiguo's culinary skills.

During the time Xiao Weiguo lived in the county town, he was too busy, so his grandmother or nanny Aunt Jiang always cooked for him. Because the ingredients were plentiful, Xiao Jian thought it was the best meal he had ever eaten in his life.

Unexpectedly, his elder brother managed to create such a delicious dish from a few readily available ingredients, which greatly surprised Xiao Jian.

If we say that the eldest brother suddenly changed for the better, we can say that he had a sudden awakening.

But can culinary skills be mastered overnight?

He clearly remembered that in the past, his older brother would never even go into the kitchen.

"ah!"

Xiao Weiguo chuckled twice.

"Hehe, your older brother here is exceptionally gifted. I can learn it at a glance, but others can't."

Unable to explain to his younger brother, Xiao Weiguo could only make up a story.

"You two need to practice more. It's not time to find wives yet. You can't neglect your own bellies, right?"

The moment the topic of finding a wife came up, the two of them immediately fell silent, lowered their heads, and began to eat heartily.

It's because they're too young and easily embarrassed.

At this point, Xiao Weiguo suddenly remembered something.

He had promised Xiao Feng that he would take good care of his wife and daughter in order to get him to turn against him.

Having made a promise, Xiao Weiguo wouldn't go back on his word. Now that he was back in the village, he could find out what their situation was like.

"How are Xiao Feng's wife and daughter doing now?"

Hearing his question, Xiao Jian and Hu Zi were taken aback and exchanged a glance.

"Brother, why did you suddenly ask about this?"

Xiao Jian recalled the day he arrived, when Gu Meiying was cursing him and the others furiously, and Xiao Mengjie was desperately pulling at her mother.

"I'm just asking casually, have you two seen them before?"

Xiao Weiguo didn't want the two boys to know about the sordid things that had happened in the provincial capital, so he gave them a casual remark.

Xiao Jian nodded.

“On the first day we returned with Liu Qing, we ran into the mother and daughter at the village entrance. Gu Meiying had gone mad. When she saw us, she even tried to hit us.”

Xiao Jian told his elder brother the truth.

"Crazy?"

Upon hearing this, Xiao Weiguo was startled. He put down his rice bowl.

Xiao Feng and Fu Xiaolian ran away, and only half a year has passed. How did Gu Meiying suddenly go crazy?

On second thought, that makes sense.

When something like this happens in a rural area, it's the whole family that loses face, especially Gu Meiying, Xiao Feng's ex-wife. If word gets out that her husband ran off with another woman, how can she, a rural woman, face the world?

Staying at her husband's house is pointless; her husband is gone, and she can't hold her head high.

Going back to her parents' home? That's out of the question. Her parents would rather she die at her mother-in-law's house than let her go back and embarrass the whole family.

Fortunately, Gu Meiying's family had no brothers. If there had been even one member in her family, Xiao Changsuo's entire family would have had a terrible time.

Xiao Feng and Fu Xiaolian are truly wicked.

Xiao Weiguo stared blankly for a long time before picking up his chopsticks to continue eating.

“Xiao Jian, if you two ever have any trouble in the village, lend a hand if you can. If you really can't help, call me.”
