Chapter 176 Patience

Xiao Weiguo met Liu Changhe on the street. He was about to go up and greet him when Liu Changhe spoke first.

"Weiguo, come here, to the brigade headquarters."

Xiao Weiguo didn't understand what was happening, but he followed and they arrived at the brigade headquarters together.

After everyone was seated around the large table used for meetings, Xiao Weiguo finally spoke and asked.

"Uncle Liu, what happened last night? Was there any movement?"

Liu Changhe slammed his hand on the table in excitement.

“Weiguo, you guessed right, there’s definitely something wrong with the gang. We discovered two people entering the encirclement around 11 p.m. last night. It’s possible that you alerted them during the day. After those two moved around inside for a while, they didn’t make a move. I suspect that was a test.”

"Given this situation, I did not issue an arrest order and let them leave safely. If nothing unexpected happens, they will carry out large-scale operations in the next few days."

After listening for a while, Xiao Weiguo finally understood: you guys didn't catch anyone, so what's all the excitement about?

Seeing Xiao Weiguo's somewhat dejected expression, Liu Changhe continued with a smile.

"If you don't even have this much patience, what kind of police officer are you? Back in the day, when we were on the battlefield, it was common for us to lie in ambush for days and nights without moving."

"Fighting against these kinds of people is a contest of patience and perseverance. Now that I've got my eye on them, there's no way they can escape."

Liu Changhe clenched his fist tightly, his words brimming with confidence.

He returned early in the morning, bringing back half of the police force that had been lying in ambush in the ground, while the other half remained in place to hold their ground.

The soldiers' bodies weren't made of iron either. After a hot and stuffy night, coupled with mosquito bites, they all looked like wilted eggplants and had no energy left.

Even Jiao Bai's eyes were bloodshot. In his words, he couldn't sleep at all in the fields at night, and he felt extremely uncomfortable.

It seems that even the strongest person has weaknesses without professional training.

During the day, the group had been harassed by Xiao Weiguo, and Liu Changhe judged that they probably wouldn't show up again, so he only left half the police force as a precaution. Now, those people are all under Hu Haidong's command. Even if ten or eight suspects do appear, it will be difficult for them to escape.

There wasn't enough space in the village for the soldiers to sleep, so they just found a place at the brigade headquarters to rest for a bit before another group came back in the afternoon.

Xiao Weiguo volunteered to drive to the state-run restaurant in the township and bought all the large steamed buns in the restaurant, along with a large bucket of millet porridge. Before leaving, he instructed the restaurant manager to prepare two more servings of the same amount for lunch and dinner.

They'd all been starving in the fields all night; they couldn't stand it without eating. Liu Changhe wasn't an outsider to him, so he didn't stand on ceremony. Such a big boss, a little financial loss wouldn't bother him.

The returning police officers ate some large meat buns and drank a bowl of millet porridge before finding a place to rest.

Jiao Bai then returned to Xiao Wei's country and fell fast asleep on the kang (heated brick bed) with Xiao Jian and the others.

Xiao Weiguo was the only one who had nothing to do. He made a call to the company to confirm that there was nothing he needed to go back to handle, so he felt at ease and continued to stay at home.

Xiao Jian and Hu Zi had gone to work in the fields, and at home were Xiao Weiguo, his sister Xiao Shanshan, Zhang Huihui, and Jiao Bai, who was fast asleep.

Zhang Huihui is still a bit unfamiliar with Xiao Weiguo and doesn't dare to speak much when she sees him.

This left Xiao Weiguo feeling helpless, but there was nothing he could do but patiently try to get to know her.

I saw her reading a book on the stone platform in the yard. If I wasn't mistaken, she was probably reading her textbook.

This little girl is quite dedicated to her studies.

Xiao Weiguo walked behind her and quietly watched her study without making a sound to disturb her.

Xiao Shanshan came out of the room and saw Xiao Weiguo in the yard.

"Brother, what are you looking at over there?"

Xiao Shanshan asked a question casually, which startled Zhang Huihui, who was studying.

Seeing Xiao Weiguo standing behind her, she hurriedly stood up.

"Brother Xiao..."

He let out a soft cry, then lowered his head, clutching his books, and tried to go back inside.

"Huihui".

Xiao Weiguo called out to her.

Zhang Huihui stopped walking, but did not turn around, quietly waiting for Xiao Weiguo to continue.

Xiao Weiguo didn't mind and turned around to stand in front of her again.

“Huihui, after this summer vacation, go to school in the county town with your sister Shanshan. You like learning and you should be a good student. It would be a waste if you didn’t continue your studies.”

After hearing these words, Zhang Huihui looked up at him, opened her mouth as if to say "talent," but didn't say it, and then lowered her head again.

Xiao Shanshan was standing not far away. Hearing her older brother's words, she also came over.

She grabbed Zhang Huihui's arm and shook it gently.

"Huihui, your brother is only doing this for your own good, say something!"

"Sister Shanshan, I..."

At this moment, Zhang Huihui really didn't know what to say.

She longed to continue her studies, but she was currently living under someone else's roof, with everything she ate, drank, wore, and used provided by Xiao Weiguo's family.

She couldn't do farm work, and with Xiao Shanshan at home, she couldn't help much either. This made her feel like a useless person.

Under such circumstances, how could she have the face to go to the city to study with her ex-husband? Wouldn't that be dragging down their family for many more years?

What makes me think I can compete? Just the friendship I had with Xiao Jianhu back then?

"Sister Shanshan, I won't study anymore. I'll just help with the housework properly."
