Zhou Ruolan's original plan was to move to Xiao Weiguo's place after the holiday and live with Xiao Yue, so she could help Xiao Yue with her music lessons during the break. She could also tutor her with her other homework.
However, Xiao Weiguo unexpectedly decided to renovate the house during the holiday.
The upstairs space in the family compound is too small; there's no place for her to live there. Besides, Xiao Yue's piano can't be moved upstairs.
Left with no other option, Zhou Ruolan had to abandon this plan.
She hadn't been to Xiao Weiguo's place since the holiday started, and for some reason, she appeared at the company gate today.
Judging from her expression, she was probably waiting for someone. Xiao Weiguo thought for a moment and figured she was probably waiting for him; she wasn't familiar with anyone else.
Fearing that she might have something important to do, Xiao Weiguo had Jiao Bai drive the car over.
However, even when Xiao Weiguo's car drove very close to her, she didn't look at it.
Xiao Weiguo then realized that they probably weren't waiting for him. His car was easily recognizable in this small county town, and if they were specifically waiting for him, they wouldn't have failed to notice his car approaching.
But they were already quite close, and he had no reason to avoid her, so he had Jiao Bai park the car next to Zhou Ruolan.
He opened the car window, stuck his head out, and asked with a smile.
"Teacher Zhou, who are you waiting for?"
Zhou Ruolan was startled when she suddenly heard someone call her name. She looked back and saw that it was Xiao Weiguo. She rubbed her hands together a little embarrassedly.
"Mr. Xiao, you're off work. I'm waiting for a friend."
friend?
I haven't heard of her having any friends at the factory.
Xiao Weiguo was somewhat puzzled.
Since everyone knew each other, Xiao Weiguo jokingly asked a question.
"Teacher Zhou, are you dating someone? Which young man in our factory is so lucky? Should I go in and call him out for you?"
Zhou Ruolan blushed at his words and was about to argue when he said something.
Just then, a beggar appeared out of nowhere.
The beggar was disheveled, his face covered in mud, and he held a smooth wooden stick in his hand, tapping it on the cement road to probe the way. Only the whites of his eyes were visible, so he appeared to be blind.
As if he heard someone talking over there, he tentatively reached out the broken bowl in his hand.
"Young lady, boss, please have mercy and let me have two coins to eat."
His voice sounded weak and feeble, as if he hadn't eaten for days.
Zhou Ruolan glanced back at him and found that he was a blind beggar dressed in filthy clothes and reeking of stench.
Looking at his hunched body and trembling hands, it seemed as if he was about to faint from hunger at any moment.
Seeing his pitiful state, Zhou Ruolan couldn't help but feel sorry for him.
She rummaged through her small bag and found some loose change, probably a dollar or two.
"Uncle, I only have this little change with me. Take it and buy some food."
"Oh, thank you, young lady. You are such a kind person. God bless you."
The beggar stepped forward somewhat excitedly and held out the bowl in his hand to Zhou Ruolan.
Xiao Weiguo wasn't the kind of person without compassion; he was always willing to lend a helping hand in such situations.
He took out two ten-yuan bills from his bag and handed them through the window.
"Uncle, I have some too. Please don't think it's too little, just take it."
The beggar seemed to only now hear Xiao Weiguo's voice and turned around.
"Thank you, thank you boss. You're a really good person. This old man thanks you."
As he spoke, he slowly moved toward Xiao Weiguo's open car window.
Just then, for some reason, Xiao Weiguo suddenly had a very bad premonition.
The premonition was so strong that Xiao Weiguo's heart skipped a beat.
He inwardly cried out in alarm.
When I looked up at the old beggar again, the whites of his eyes had disappeared.
His mud-covered face suddenly transformed into a cold expression. His eyes gleamed with a chilling light that was captivating.
His body was no longer hunched over, and he threw the broken bowl in his hand to the ground. At this moment, he no longer looked like a beggar, but rather like a demon who had killed countless people.
Even under such intense sunlight, that chilling aura made Xiao Weiguo feel a coldness creep down his spine.
Although Xiao Weiguo reacted quickly, the other person was even faster.
Amidst Zhou Ruolan's startled cry, a gleaming dagger suddenly sprang from the tip of the wooden stick he was using to probe the way.
With a slight sway, he had already bypassed Zhou Ruolan.
"Go to hell."
The man let out a cold snort, and the long-handled dagger in his hand, accompanied by a gust of cold wind, stabbed swiftly toward Xiao Weiguo's face.
Although Xiao Weiguo had already pulled his head back into the car, the man still had a sharp knife and a wooden stick in his hand, which was more than a meter and a half long.
At such close range, and with his speed so fast, Xiao Dao arrived at Xiao Weiguo's face in an instant, the sound of the blade cutting through the wind filling the air.
Xiao Weiguo closed his eyes; he knew he was completely finished this time.
At that moment, he remembered who this person was—the leader of the tomb raiders he had met briefly at the cemetery. Liu Changhe later said that his name was Zheng Qiang, and that he was a martial arts master.
He never dreamed that Zheng Qiang would appear before him in broad daylight, in front of everyone, in such a manner.
He wasn't unprepared for this man; all the security guards from the security department were deployed to patrol the factory and the residential area, and there were also many plainclothes officers nearby, waiting for him to appear.
But no one expected that he would appear so brazenly, as a blind beggar, right under everyone's noses, and launch a fatal attack on Xiao Weiguo.
