Chapter 195 Autumn Harvest

Liu Ye had no objection to resigning from her job.

In fact, her father, Liu Erzhu, had already discussed this matter with her.

As Xiao Weiguo's career grew bigger and bigger, it was a bit unreasonable for his wife to stay at the school as a teacher and not be able to share any of the burden with him.

Liu Ye was a reasonable person; she knew which was more important compared to Xiao Weiguo's career.

She had no objection to sharing some of her partner's burden.

"Okay, I'll let the school leaders know when school starts after the summer break. If you need anything from me in the future, I'll try my best to do it."

Xiao Weiguo was very happy to receive Liu Ye's affirmation.

"Wife, you are so good."

Xiao Weiguo went up to make a move to get intimate, but Liu Ye pushed him away.

She still couldn't walk properly, and dared not let that beast get close again. That family heirloom was beyond her current strength to handle.

Autumn has arrived, and the leaves outside the window are already showing signs of turning yellow. Every now and then, a leaf brushes against the windowpane and falls down.

Newlywed Xiao Weiguo put aside all his work at the company and devoted himself to spending his honeymoon with Liu Ye.

He was always too busy before and didn't have much time to spend with Liu Ye. Now that he finally had an excuse, how could he let the opportunity slip by?

Xiao Jian and Hu Zi returned to Xiao Village. With the arrival of autumn, it was time to harvest their two mu of early corn.

Early in the morning, the two of them dragged a cart, along with sacks and bamboo baskets, down to the fields.

The summer heat has almost subsided, and a cool breeze is blowing through the fields.

The crops in the fields are almost ready for harvest. Beans, corn, cotton...

Neatly arranged fields stretched across the land. Everywhere, farmers could be seen working in the fields.

The production responsibility system, or the policy of assigning tasks to individual households, has been implemented for many years.

Now that the farmers have their own land, they are incredibly motivated.

In less than two years, they solved their food and clothing problems. They no longer had to worry about their daily meals like before.

As people's lives improve day by day and their living standards rise, their thinking also changes.

From having enough to eat, to eating well, and then to dressing well and living well, people are gradually improving their quality of life.

Although everyone is still somewhat poor, there is hope in people's eyes.

With hope, life has something to look forward to.

For thousands of years, generations of farmers have been like this: they are not afraid of hardship or fatigue, but they are afraid of having no hope for life and having no hope at all throughout the year.

"Tiger, our corn cobs are growing well this year, the yield should be good."

Xiao Jian, pulling an empty cart in front, turned around and shouted to Hu Zi, who was following behind.

Gao Hu carried a short-handled hoe on his shoulder (a common piece of furniture in northern China, usually used for cutting corn and sorghum stalks). He casually tore off a sorghum leaf from the roadside and put it in his mouth.

“Brother Jian, the two of us can make a year’s worth of food just by farming these few acres of land.”

In fact, neither of them lacked money, food, or other necessities in their lives.

Whenever Xiao Weiguo and his siblings come to visit, they always bring a lot of daily necessities and money, afraid that the two of them will go hungry.

The fact that the two of them are still busy with farm work in the fields is simply a way for them to prove their worth through the harvest.

Both of them were children who had grown up in hardship. They could live a life that wasn't glamorous, but they couldn't be without their own value; that was their dignity as human beings.

The two walked and chatted, laughing and talking. They encountered many villagers along the way. In a village, there is almost no one who doesn't know each other, and everyone greeted each other warmly.

"Xiao Jian, you two get out of bed."

"Hey, Auntie, the corn is ripe. Go and harvest it while the weather is good."

"Uncle, your cotton plants are blooming so well, you're going to make a fortune this year."

Xiao Jian also stopped from time to time to greet the acquaintances who were busy working in the fields.

"Haha, what wealth am I getting? If we're talking about getting rich, who's richer than your brother? Xiao Jian, why are you suffering like this? It's so much better to live a life of luxury with your brother."

"Hey, I just love being here in our fields, it's so relaxing."

Xiao Jian pulled up his cart, responding with a smile as he walked.

That's how life is in the countryside; there are no conflicts of interest, and everyone is very kind to each other.

Neighbors always lend a hand to each other, no matter what happens to one of them.

Even the vegetables and radishes grown by each family would be shared with the neighbors. Today I'll give you a few chili peppers, tomorrow you'll give me a few persimmons, and so on. This was a common occurrence.

Compared to city dwellers separated by skyscrapers, this place has a much warmer, more human touch. This is also why many elderly people never want to leave their hometown.

Arriving at their own cornfield, the two took off their coats, one wearing only a vest, and plunged inside.

Thanks to ample fertilizer and sufficient rainfall, the corn is growing exceptionally well this year, with each ear of corn as thick as a child's arm.

Xiao Jian took a bag and shredded the corn, putting it into the bag. Gao Hu followed behind, wielding a hoe and cutting down the stalks after the corn had dried up.

These straws can not only be used for firewood, but also chopped up and fed to livestock by households that raise them.

This kind of physical work is not easy even for two strong young men.

After picking several bags of corn, the two of them were exhausted.

"Tiger, take a break."

Xiao Jian plopped down on the fallen corn stalks and called to Hu Zi, who was drenched in sweat.
