At first, they thought the group was just passing by, but as they got closer and closer until they entered their house, the elderly couple realized that the group was coming for their home.
The head matchmaker, having received a bribe from Wei Changqing, immediately put on a stern smile and greeted the elderly couple when she saw them at home.
"Oh, Brother Zhang, Sister-in-law, what a joyous occasion! You two are truly blessed."
Zhang Damao's parents exchanged glances, neither of them understanding the source of their joy.
"Young lady, what are you saying? There's no happy occasion in my family. What kind of talk is that?"
In the end, it was Zhang Damao's mother who went up to her and pulled the matchmaker aside to ask her questions.
The matchmaker waved her red handkerchief, her face beaming with joy.
"Sister-in-law, you're truly blessed! Good news is just around the corner, and you don't even know it. Look at all this!"
As she spoke, she turned around and lifted the red cloths off the carrying poles of the four Wei brothers one by one.
The sight of the items left the elderly couple speechless, and even the surrounding villagers gasped in astonishment.
The things the Wei family brought were enough to feed and provide for a family for a whole year in their small mountain village.
"Hey girl, what do you mean by this?"
The elderly couple still didn't understand the other party's intentions, and they began to feel a little panicked.
"Sister-in-law, there are too many people here, let's go inside and talk."
The matchmaker who came didn't know how to be polite at all, and pulled the old couple into the house.
The four Wei brothers also carried their loads to the doorway and squatted there waiting for news from inside.
There weren't many extra furnishings in the main room. The matchmaker pulled over a wooden chair, crossed her legs, and sat down. Zhang Damao's mother poured her a glass of water.
Regardless of the reason, guests are always welcome, and in the village, no one dares to slight the matchmaker.
Old Zhang habitually squatted down by the gate, lit a pipe of his old tobacco, and puffed away, waiting for the matchmaker to speak.
"Sister-in-law, where's your Da Mao? I can't find him."
The matchmaker pretended to take a sip of water and casually asked.
“My Da Mao went up the mountain early this morning and hasn’t come back yet. Is there something you need to see her for, sister?”
Now, Zhang Damao's mother seemed to realize that today's events were related to her son, Zhang Damao. A sense of unease began to creep into her heart.
The matchmaker chuckled and put on an arrogant air.
“Sister, to be honest, I see that your Da Mao is not young anymore. Men his age in the mountains would have a whole kang of babies by now. I feel sorry for Da Mao, so I specially found him a good family. That’s why I came here to ask for your opinion, brother and sister-in-law.”
To be honest, this is a real worry for the elderly couple. Their son is almost thirty years old and still hasn't gotten married or had children, which is simply incomprehensible in the mountains.
But then again, even if his son is a bit older, it's impossible for him to go back to the mountains to find a wife.
Having finally escaped this impoverished mountain valley, there's no reason for them to ever fly back.
"Young lady."
Old Zhang shouted, tapped his pipe, and stood up from the ground.
“My son, Da Mao, is not young anymore, but he will be a city dweller in the future. He can't possibly come back to this poor mountain village. Don't you think so? I appreciate your kindness.”
The old man's words were exactly what the matchmaker had expected, and she had already prepared her excuse.
"Brother, don't be in such a hurry. Let me finish. I'm not bragging, but the girl I've found for you comes from the best family in the surrounding area."
Before the elderly couple could speak, she continued.
“My daughter is in excellent physical condition; she can handle any kind of physical work. You know, when Da Mao goes out to work, someone at home will have to be the pillar of the family. If you let Da Mao find a girl from the city, who will take care of you two when you can no longer walk?”
This matchmaker was truly eloquent; she managed to portray Wei Yulan's shortcomings as strengths, as if Zhang Damao would gain a great advantage by marrying her.
"Take another look. The things my daughter's family asked me to bring, where can you find fault with them? I'm not bragging, but I've never seen such a generous family in my life."
What she said is true; ordinary families don't usually give so much money when their daughters get married.
With things having come to this point, and considering the four strong and brave brothers standing at the door, if the old couple still couldn't guess who she was talking about, they'd be fools.
"Little sister, you're not talking about Yulan... girl, are you?"
The old lady didn't know what words to use to describe Wei Yulan, and after racking her brains for a long time, she finally came up with the name of a girl.
She trembled slightly as she said it.
Everyone in the village knows Wei Yulan. Not only is she lazy and greedy, but she's also spoiled rotten by her family and acts completely unreasonable. Most importantly, she doesn't act like a woman at all. Weighing over 200 pounds, what kind of man could resist her?
If a woman like that were to enter the family, not only Zhang Damao, but the elderly couple wouldn't be able to survive.
“Sister-in-law, you’re so clever. You guessed it right away. I was talking about Yulan’s daughter. Her father said that as long as your family agrees, you’ll become in-laws. He’ll take care of all your chores. Da Mao will work outside, and Yulan will stay home to manage the household. You two won’t have to do anything. You can just relax and enjoy your retirement.”
"You couldn't find such a good thing even if you carried a lantern for eight lifetimes."
The matchmaker's words were so flowery and elaborate, it was as if Zhang Damao's family had gotten a huge advantage.
This infuriated Old Man Zhang.
If you were talking about a normal woman, that would be one thing, but Wei Yulan is worse than a ghost, yet she goes to his house and praises him like he's a flower. Isn't that bullying him?
