At fifty or sixty years old, and as the village head, Wei Changqing couldn't possibly make baseless accusations. The elderly couple had no choice but to believe him.
The elderly couple simply couldn't understand what their son was thinking.
If he truly liked that kind of woman, why did he make such a fuss in the first place?
Why did he cause his own father to almost fight someone?
"No, we need to go see Da Mao."
Ultimately, the elderly couple demanded to see their son in person to verify the truth. They simply couldn't understand their son's thinking.
Wei Changqing readily agreed.
"No problem, come with me. I'm at my house, keeping Yu Ban company while she's pregnant. Even if you hadn't asked, I would have invited you over. After all, the wedding is tomorrow, and the two families' elders need to meet and discuss things."
The elderly couple followed Wei Changqing to his home and met Zhang Damao.
Just as Wei Changqing had said, apart from his slightly dull eyes, his son had become chubby and rosy-cheeked in the two months since they last met.
With such tonifying supplements every day, how could one not have a rosy complexion?
Finally seeing his family, Zhang Damao felt incredibly wronged, and tears almost welled up in his eyes.
But in the end, he held back.
Since it has already become a fact and there is no room for resistance, is it meaningful to let the two elderly people know?
Not only can they not help themselves, but they also add to their worries. They are over sixty years old, how many more years do they have left to live? Are they supposed to worry about their son for the rest of their lives and not be able to die in peace?
"Son, what exactly happened?"
The mother couldn't help herself and looked at her son expectantly before asking the question that had been on her mind.
Even though the embers in Old Zhang's pipe had died, he was still puffing away, and the less embers there were, the harder he puffed.
Zhang Damao suppressed his grief and indignation, forcing a smile to appear calm.
“Father, Mother, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before. Yulan and I have been engaged for a long time. The last time I left, I didn’t let you see me off because I wanted to take Yulan back to the city with me. I was afraid you would find out.”
He repeated exactly what Wei Changqing had taught him.
Now the elderly couple had no choice but to give up.
Unexpectedly, after a lifetime of hard work to send his son to university, thinking he was going to make something of himself, he ended up flying back to this small, dilapidated mountain village.
But what could they do? Their son had agreed, and the girl was already pregnant; it was too late for the old couple to say anything.
Stopping her urge to scold her son, the old lady asked Zhang Damao.
"Where is Yulan? Isn't she pregnant with our grandson? I should see her, Mother."
Wei Yulan, who had been hiding by the door, had been waiting for her to say this. She put on a shy look and swayed as she walked up to the old lady.
He twisted his hands together and made a hesitant, awkward sound.
"Father, Mother."
Looking at their daughter-in-law, who was just like Gui Douzi, the old couple felt a mix of emotions.
My son is almost thirty and still unmarried. After much searching, he finally found someone like this.
They now suspect that there might be something wrong with their son's mind.
Or have they been holding it in for too long and are so desperate they're willing to eat anything?
However, the facts are undeniable; since they've already called him "father" and "mother," the elderly couple has to reciprocate in some way.
She patted herself down and realized she didn't have anything worth showing off. Finally, the old lady took off a bracelet from her wrist, the material of which she couldn't tell.
This was an heirloom bracelet that her family gave her as part of her wedding dowry. It looked like it was carved from some kind of stone. The old lady had worn it her whole life, but now, in a hurry, she didn't have anything of value to offer, so she had to take the bracelet off.
“Well, daughter, you know we’re poor. This is my dowry when I got married. It’s not worth much. Keep it as a keepsake.”
"Thank you, Mother."
At this moment, Wei Yulan acted like a well-bred young lady, shyly accepting the bracelet.
She originally wanted to wear it on her wrist, but her arm was almost as thick as the old lady's leg, and she couldn't get it on after trying for a long time.
He could only laugh awkwardly and stuff it into his pocket.
Zhang Damao watched all this from the sidelines, feeling incredibly frustrated.
He knew that the bracelet was something his mother had worn all her life. Although it might not have been anything special, it was the only keepsake his mother had left from his maternal grandmother's family.
Now, it has been passed on to Wei Yulan, whom he hates so much.
However, he couldn't stop any of this. One can imagine how he felt.
The old lady gave away her bracelet and was still giving Wei Yulan some instructions.
"Child, you need to be careful now that you're pregnant. Try not to go up the mountain. If you bump into something and have an accident, it won't be a small matter."
Regardless, this woman was pregnant with her grandson, and the old lady had to swallow the pain, even if it meant losing her front tooth, all for her son.
After they finished speaking, Wei Changqing and his wife came up, each grabbing one of them, and led the elderly couple to the main room.
"In-laws, let's go inside and talk. We can discuss tomorrow's arrangements. Don't worry, my family will cover all the expenses and won't make things difficult for you."
The elderly couple were dragged into the main room, where several daughters-in-law served them tea and food, treating them like honored guests.
Zhang Damao watched his parents being led away, standing there speechless and choked with emotion, unable to describe his current feelings.
"Brother Mao, we're really getting married tomorrow, are you happy?"
Zhang Damao's tears flowed instantly.
I'm so happy, I'm fucking happy.
