As soon as Liu Changhe, Hu Haidong, and their entourage stepped out of the house, accompanied by Xiao Weiguo, they saw the car parked in front of the door.
The group stopped and saw three people get out of the car. Xiao Weiguo recognized one of them.
It was Dr. Zhang Tongsheng, the director of the township health center.
Two other men who appeared to be leaders walked toward the Xiao family courtyard together, accompanied by Zhang Tongsheng.
One of the leaders saw Liu Changhe and reached out his hand from a distance.
"Old Liu, you really are still here."
Liu Changhe recognized one of the men: Sun Conglin, the deputy secretary of the county party committee, and Gao Weijun, the head of the county's epidemic prevention station.
After shaking hands with Sun Conglin, Liu Changhe asked with some surprise, "Old Sun, Old Gao, what brings you two here together?"
Sun Conglin laughed heartily.
"Haha, just like you, we're all here for a young man named Xiao Weiguo."
"oh?"
Liu Changhe turned around and pulled Xiao Weiguo in front of him, introducing him: "This is County Chief Sun, and this is Station Chief Gao of the Epidemic Prevention Station."
Then he asked Sun Conglin.
"This is Xiao Weiguo. What do you want with him?"
After Liu Changhe finished his introduction, Xiao Weiguo roughly understood their purpose, which was nothing more than the epidemic.
He very naturally reached out and shook hands with the two leaders.
"Welcome, esteemed leader. Please come inside."
Just as he stepped out of his house, more guests arrived, forcing Xiao Weiguo to open the door again to welcome them.
Now there were even more people, and the house couldn't accommodate everyone. The four siblings moved all the small stools to the yard, but it still wasn't enough, and several people had to stand.
Upon entering the courtyard, Zhang Tongsheng and Gao Weijun discovered quicklime powder scattered throughout the yard, along with rat traps and cages tucked away in every nook and cranny.
They exchanged a glance and nodded approvingly.
After the leaders were seated, County Chief Sun smiled at Xiao Weiguo and said, "I heard that you saved Minister Liu's mother and promptly discovered that she had hemorrhagic fever. You also offered several very valuable suggestions at the hospital. Is that true?"
He came from the township health center, so he had already learned about the situation from Zhang Tongsheng.
Xiao Weiguo chuckled and waved his hand, saying, "These are all minor matters, not worth mentioning to the leader."
"A small matter?"
Gao Weijun interrupted.
"Haha, you're too modest, kid. Putting aside your selfless act of saving others and your heroic deeds, do you know how many people your valuable suggestions saved?"
He opened a small notebook and pointed to the data recorded inside.
"Following your suggestion, we concentrated our efforts and screened all fever patients throughout the county, discovering more than 30 cases of hemorrhagic fever, including two cases in your Gaoji Township alone. There are many other patients still being screened. According to our estimate, the total number of cases in this batch is no less than 50."
He closed his notebook and said heavily, "These people were discovered early, and most of them are in the first stage of the disease. As long as the treatment is in place, they will not be in any danger. If it had been a few days later, it would have been hard to say. Comrade Xiao, this is all thanks to you."
"No fewer than fifty cases?"
Xiao Weiguo initially thought this was just the initial stage, with at most ten or so cases, but he didn't expect so many to be discovered so quickly. It seems that this major epidemic, which has swept across several provinces, is on the verge of breaking out.
"Station Chief Gao, may I ask what measures you have taken?"
"We have already set up isolation zones in various township and county health centers. Once a case is discovered, it will be treated on the spot immediately. At the same time, we have reported to higher authorities and issued a nationwide notice to strengthen awareness of epidemic prevention. Due to the urgency of the situation, this is all we can do at the moment."
Sun Conglin then said to Xiao Weiguo, "I heard from Elder Zhang that you have done a lot of research in this area. We came here today to hear your opinion."
Xiao Weiguo lowered his head in deep thought.
He knew this was not the time to hide his abilities; this was a matter of life and death concerning millions of people.
"County Chief Sun, Station Chief Gao, since we've come this far, I'll be frank. I have a few suggestions for your consideration. Please forgive any shortcomings."
The two nodded together, signaling him to continue.
"First, regarding treatment, we should immediately apply to the higher authorities for a large quantity of medicines to treat hemorrhagic fever and request that they send professional medical personnel to our county. After all, if a large number of cases are discovered, without sufficient medicine and manpower, even early detection will be useless."
"Secondly, prevention is crucial. If we want to eliminate the epidemic from the root, prevention is of paramount importance."
"I request the county party committee to establish an epidemic prevention and control working group, and to work with surrounding counties and cities to strengthen rodent and mosquito control efforts in light of the current situation. In particular, large-scale rodent control should be carried out in rural areas, both at home and in the wild."
"The next issue is the supply of materials. Throughout history, the most terrifying aspect of a major epidemic is not the epidemic itself, but the issue of reassuring the people. If a large number of people flee the epidemic area, the entire country will be plunged into difficulties. Only by ensuring the supply of materials, reducing the difficulties for everyone in the work of epidemic prevention and control, and avoiding unnecessary panic, can we play a role in stabilizing public sentiment."
"That's all I have to say. Please consider it, leaders."
Xiao Weiguo blurted out what was on his mind, then subtly observed the expressions on the faces of the leaders.
Sun Conglin and Gao Weijun continued recording, pondering as they went. After Xiao Weiguo finished speaking, they exchanged a glance and nodded to each other.
"Comrade Xiao Weiguo, your opinions are very pertinent, and many of them coincide with our county's ideas. We will implement your suggestions immediately upon returning."
