As soon as they stuck their heads out, two pebbles shot out from a window in the main room, whistling through the air and striking their faces.
One of the boys was a little slow to react, and with a snap, a pebble the size of a thumb hit him squarely on the forehead.
With a scream of pain, he fell off the wall and rolled to the ground, pressing his hands to his forehead, blood already seeping through his fingers.
The other kid, quick to react, swung a pebble across his neck. The pebble grazed his scalp and flew past with a whoosh, landing with a thud some distance away, apparently hitting something.
He was so frightened that he jumped down from the wall in a panic. Cold sweat poured down his body.
Yaji walked over and pried open the hand of the man who had been hit by the stone. He saw a huge gash on the man's forehead, a bloody mess.
Although he didn't see it, he could tell what the other party used to attack his men.
It was just an ordinary pebble, yet it managed to injure someone like that. The technique, the force, and the accuracy were all essential. It seems there's a master hidden in this courtyard.
Yaji tensed up; the presence of such a master had made today's operation much more difficult.
"Big brother, what should we do?"
"The thug who jumped down from the wall asked, still shaken."
Yaji looked up at the high wall, then at the tightly closed gate, and fell into deep thought.
Now, this courtyard is like a sturdy fortress. The enemy is in the shadows, while we are in the open. As soon as our people show their faces, they will be attacked. We have already lost one brother and another one has been injured. We lost two people without even saying goodbye.
This infuriated Yagi. Fortunately, he remained rational and did not order a full-scale assault. Instead, they all rushed forward and scaled the wall.
If the enemy has sufficient firepower, then it would be suicide.
He observed carefully for a moment, and then a thought suddenly struck him.
"Everyone, follow me."
He waved his hand, signaling everyone to go around the back of the wall.
If the expert is in the room in front, they can go around to the side. There will be a section of wall there that is a blind spot. No matter how good the expert is, they can't let the hidden weapon bend, right?
Having made up their minds, the group circled around to the west, getting close to the wall of the row of main houses.
They really did climb over from here, right? Even the most accurate shot with a whitish-white pebble wouldn't hit this spot.
Yaji felt he had found a breakthrough and excitedly directed his thugs to climb over the wall.
The first thug to climb up peered out of the main room's window and, seeing it wasn't open, breathed a sigh of relief when a gunshot rang out.
With a loud thud, his body fell off the wall.
He collapsed to the ground without uttering a sound, a large, bloody hole in his forehead from which brown blood clots mixed with white brain matter gushed. His condition was far more gruesome than the person who had been struck by the stone earlier. He died instantly.
The policeman living in the opposite house was a really good shot. In the dead of night, with only a sliver of moonlight, he shot the other man in the head with a single shot.
The group of thugs were all dumbfounded.
The loss of another partner in an instant dealt a heavy blow to their confidence.
Yaji is starting to get a little unsettled.
It was obvious that the other side had anticipated this move and had left them no blind spots in the entire courtyard.
From this, it seems that not only is there a master inside, but the other guests mentioned by the middle-aged man are also quite extraordinary.
With such excellent marksmanship and such meticulous planning, Yaji had reason to believe that the so-called guests inside might actually be mainland police officers who had been lying in ambush all along.
Yaji was very fortunate that he had taken precautions and had Mr. Jiang transfer these people from the port city. If he had come alone, he might have already been defeated here.
But what should we do now? We can't get into the yard, should we retreat?
Yaji was still very unwilling. Although they had lost three combatants, they still had more than a dozen people, which gave them a significant advantage over the three or five people inside.
If we just back out like this, how can we face Mr. Jiang?
I glanced at my watch; it was already 7 p.m. I'd only been dawdling for a short while, and over an hour had already passed.
The temperature in the mountains was getting lower and lower, and those who had come from Nanzhu were shivering from the cold.
His lips turned blue.
"Boss, how about we build a fire to warm ourselves up? It's fucking freezing here."
One of the henchmen, unable to bear the cold wind, offered a suggestion.
Warming oneself by the fire.
Suddenly, a thought struck Yaji.
Yes, that broken door can't be broken down, but it's made of wood after all, so it can be burned with fire.
Once those two doors are set ablaze, our own men can rush in without being exposed to the enemy's guns.
"Let's go back to the courtyard gate."
Yaji waved his hand and led his men back to the south side of the courtyard, to the main gate.
"Scatter, everyone, go find some firewood, pile it on the gate, and burn it down."
Yaji stared at the two wooden doors and gave the orders in a sinister tone.
Upon hearing this, the crowd scattered and went to find firewood nearby.
Besides rocks, the mountains are full of dry branches, making it incredibly easy to find firewood this season.
A short while later, one of them came running back carrying a large bag of firewood.
Yaji directed the people to pile the firewood in front of the gate.
