Chapter 27 Renting a House

He knew the location of the county's No. 1 Middle School, asked passersby for directions, and quickly found Hongxing Primary School.

It's not far from the east of the No. 1 Middle School in the county, only about four or five hundred meters away.

Xiao Weiguo was very satisfied. With the two schools so close together, it would be very convenient for Shanshan to take care of Xiao Jiang and Xiao Yue if he didn't have time in the future, without taking up too much of her time.

After figuring out the locations of the two schools, Xiao Weiguo started wandering around the area.

He wanted to inquire whether there were any houses available for rent in this area.

The school is located in a slightly northern suburb, where there are not many high-rise buildings; most buildings are single-story houses.

After making inquiries, he actually found a small courtyard for rent not far from the school. The words "For Rent" were written in large red chalk on the gate.

His family is large, so a typical apartment building wouldn't be suitable for them.

There are four main rooms in this courtyard, two side rooms on the west side, and a kitchen and toilet on the east side. All of them are red brick structures with tiles on the exterior walls.

There is running water inside. The entire yard is paved with cement slabs and is very clean and tidy.

The person who showed him the house was an old man who lived next door to the courtyard.

According to him, the landlord's family had all moved to Beijing, and now only their youngest daughter lives in the county town.

Because of work, she is temporarily staying in the county town. Once the house is rented out, she should go to the capital with her.

That's why I entrusted him to help deal with the guests who came to view the house.

The old man said that as long as Xiao Weiguo liked the house, he would take him to meet the landlord's daughter and they could discuss the price in person.

Xiao Weiguo asked the old man to unlock the doors of each room, and he went around to each room.

The floor was all tiled, the walls were painted, the whole environment was very clean, and most of the furniture was still there.

Judging from the furniture and decorations, this family must be quite wealthy.

The old man quietly told Xiao Weiguo that the male head of the household was originally a high-ranking official in the province, but his family had always stayed in the county.

Now that he's been promoted, his superiors have taken care of him and allowed him to transfer his entire family's household registration to the capital, and have also arranged jobs for him, so the house in the county is now vacant.

The old man's words reminded Xiao Weiguo of someone.

Isn't Feng Guodong, the top official of the provincial party committee of Jiaonan Province, from Shang County?

In his past life's memories, Feng Guodong should have been transferred to the capital in 1986 and entered the cabinet, ranking among the top leaders in the country.

Could this unassuming little courtyard be Feng Guodong's former residence?

However, this was irrelevant to Xiao Weiguo. He just wanted to rent a few rooms for his family to live in, and whether or not they were Feng Guodong's homes didn't matter much.

"Sir, I'm very satisfied with this house. Could you take me to see the landlord so we can discuss the price?"

The courtyard was in good condition in all aspects, just right for his family to live in, and it had all the necessary furniture, so he didn't have to worry about it.

If I buy my own house in the future, or want to move, I can just pack up and leave without any burden.

The old man readily agreed, turned around, locked the door, and, together with Xiao Weiguo, each rode a bicycle towards the east of the city.

On the way, the old man told Xiao Weiguo that the landlord's daughter worked at the county chemical plant and usually lived in the plant's single dormitory, rarely going home.

Upon arriving at the chemical plant, the old man asked the gatekeeper to make a phone call, and then he and Xiao Weiguo stood at the factory gate to wait.

A short while later, a slender figure in a white coat appeared at the factory gate.

Seeing the old man and Xiao Weiguo standing outside the factory, she hurried over.

"Uncle Shang, what brings you here?"

As she greeted Grandpa Shang, she removed the mask from her face. Her voice was clear and melodious, like the gentle tinkling of a spring.

When she got closer, Xiao Weiguo realized that the woman who had come was very beautiful.

She looked to be in her early twenties, tall and slender with fair skin, delicate eyebrows, phoenix eyes, and a small, straight nose. Her jet-black hair was tied high in a ponytail, which added to her air of confidence and strength.

"Wanlin, someone has taken a liking to your house. I've brought him over to discuss the price with you."

Grandpa Shang explained his purpose and introduced Xiao Weiguo to her.

"Hello, my name is Xiao Weiguo."

Xiao Weiguo extended his right hand.

The girl wasn't shy at all. She generously extended her hand to shake his and introduced herself, "Hello, my name is Feng Wanlin."

Xiao Weiguo's heart skipped a beat.

If her surname is indeed Feng, then there's no need to ask further; she's most likely that person's daughter.

"You've seen the house, right? Are you satisfied?"

Feng Wanlin smiled sweetly and asked with her hands behind her back.

Xiao Weiguo nodded.

"Uncle Shang showed me all the places, and I was quite satisfied, but I don't know the price."

Feng Wanlin stretched out her delicate hand, extending her thumb and little finger to make a "six" gesture.

"I hate moles the most. It's a fixed price of sixty yuan a month, with a minimum payment of six months' rent upfront. If you're interested, come and sign a contract with me; if not, forget it."

Xiao Weiguo lowered his head and thought for a moment. This price was not low. In an era when the average monthly income was less than 100 yuan, how many people could afford to rent such a house?

Normally, renting a small courtyard would cost at most twenty yuan. Now he understood why their family hadn't rented out their courtyard for so long.

Seeing that Xiao Weiguo hesitated, Feng Wanlin spoke again.

"Actually, my family isn't short of money. It's just that my mom thinks it's a waste to leave it unused. You've seen the facilities inside; I dare say there aren't many houses in the entire county that can compare to my yard. If you can't accept that, then please leave."
