Zhong Te is from Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province. When he was young, his parents were wrongfully imprisoned and he was adopted by the Chen family, his neighbors.
The Chen family treated him like their own son, and even when the family was poor, they still supported his education.
Zhong Te was grateful for the Chen family's kindness and once considered changing his surname to Chen. He was an excellent student and fell in love with Liu Miaomiao, the only daughter of Secretary Liu, during high school.
After graduation, with the help of Secretary Liu, he entered the Hangzhou Development and Reform Bureau. Later, he followed Secretary Liu to Funing County and was promoted from police officer to deputy director.
"Zhong Te and Liu Miaomiao aren't married yet?" Zhang Cheng asked.
Zhao Daming sighed: "We haven't registered our marriage, but everyone knows that Secretary Liu considers him his son-in-law. Brother, this matter is too complicated; we can't handle it."
Zhang Cheng's facial muscles twitched slightly, then he forced a smile: "Fine, no matter how tough I am, I wouldn't dare to go head-to-head with Secretary Liu's prospective son-in-law."
"It's good that you've figured it out." Zhao Daming breathed a sigh of relief and patted Zhang Cheng on the shoulder. "I'll talk to Zhong Te tomorrow morning and tell him to keep an eye on Chen Xiaomo."
"The guy who smashed up my video arcade, his name is Chen Xiaomo?"
"Okay." Zhao Daming replied, "It's getting late, I'll head back now, your sister-in-law must be getting impatient."
"Brother, I'll take you there."
"No need." Zhao Daming waved his hand and quickly left.
Zhang Cheng watched Zhao Daming's figure disappear, the smile on his face receding like the tide, his eyes turning cold.
He turned and went into the emergency room.
Zhang Weiguo immediately came over: "Brother, did Chief Zhao catch someone?"
Zhang Cheng shook his head: "We'll swallow this loss."
"What?" Zhang Weiguo clenched his fists suddenly, his teeth grinding. "Brother, is the other side really that powerful? Even Chief Zhao can't afford to offend them?"
"At least you have some brains."
"Brother!" Zhang Weiguo gasped, his eyes bloodshot. "We came out with you because we didn't want to be taken advantage of! This can't be left like this! I'll avenge Jianhao and Xiaotao!"
"Bang!" Zhang Cheng kicked Zhang Weiguo in the butt, his voice low and menacing, "If you consider me your brother, then listen to me!"
"elder brother!"
"Shut up!" Zhang Cheng's gaze was like a knife.
Zhang Weiguo stiffened his neck, stomped his foot angrily, and turned to walk towards Xiao Tao's hospital bed.
The others exchanged glances, wanting to say something but not daring to.
Zhang Jianhao, with bandages wrapped around his head, leaned closer to Zhang Cheng: "Brother..."
"Shut up, all of you!" Zhang Cheng scanned the crowd. "If you consider me your brother, then stop talking nonsense. One person stays with Xiao Tao, the rest of you go back."
He said no more and turned to leave the emergency room.
Zhang Jianhao and the others looked at each other, and finally Zhang Jianhao spoke up: "Wei Guo, you stay. The rest of you, go back."
Half an hour later, at the rented room.
Zhang Da Nao had just returned from purchasing goods in Wenzhou. Seeing everyone's dejected appearance, especially the gauze on Zhang Jianhao's head, his face darkened: "Jianhao, what happened to your head?"
Zhang Jianhao remained silent and collapsed onto the bed.
"I'm asking you a question!" Zhang Da Nao was getting angry.
Li Qiming curled his lip: "Brother Gou has let this matter pass, what can we say?"
"Smack!" Zhang Da slapped Li Qiming on the back of the head. "Explain yourself!"
"Big Head Bro, we're so frustrated! Xiao Tao is still in the hospital!"
"Bang!" Zhang Jianhao slammed his foot on the iron railing of the bed, growling:
"When has Brother Gou ever been afraid in the village? But he changed when he got to the county! The video arcade was vandalized, his brother was stabbed, and he didn't dare to say a word! We know he has a lot to worry about, but this is too cowardly! He only has one head and two hands, he could fight them if necessary!"
Zhang Jianhao angrily shouted out what had happened.
Meanwhile, Zhang Cheng rode his bicycle, creaking and groaning, and disappeared into the night, heading straight for Jiefang Street.
Outside the Little Sun Video Hall, he parked his car, locked it, and casually pulled up his collar to cover most of his face.
"Five cents for an overnight stay, one cent for an hour," a young man at the door said without looking up.
Zhang Cheng handed over a dime.
"Find a seat yourself."
There weren't many people in the video arcade, just seven or eight scattered around, and the screen was showing the old movie "Landmine Warfare".
If Zhang Cheng's six video rental stores selling new films hadn't been vandalized, this place would probably be even more deserted.
Zhang Cheng casually found a corner to sit down, but his gaze lingered in the darkness.
About half an hour later, he got up and walked towards the young man at the door: "Hey buddy, where's the toilet?"
"Why would a grown man look for a toilet? He can just relieve himself in a corner outside."
"Go to the toilet."
"Too much trouble!" The young man impatiently pointed to a small door to the side. "Find it yourself in the back."
"Thanks." Zhang Cheng forced a smile and pushed open the small door.
Behind the door was a narrow, dark passageway. Zhang Cheng squinted to adjust to the darkness, his footsteps very light, and soon stopped in front of a door.
He raised his hand and tapped three times lightly.
"Who is it!" came an annoyed voice from inside the house.
"Hey buddy, can I borrow a light?" Zhang Cheng's voice was tinged with laughter.
"Damn it, are you out of your mind? Why are you here to borrow a light!" The door was suddenly flung open, and a young man grumbled as he fumbled for matches in his pocket.
"Bang!"
Before the young man could react, Zhang Cheng's right fist slammed into his chin.
The young man groaned, fell backward, and nearly bit off his tongue.
The other three people inside were startled, but quickly realized what was happening.
"Damn, someone's causing trouble!"
"Kill him!"
With a flick of his wrist, Zhang Cheng sent a military dagger silently sliding into his palm. He could now see all four people inside the room.
One of them grabbed a stool and threw it at him, but Zhang Cheng didn't retreat. Instead, he advanced, his body leaping forward like a cheetah, his right hand holding a dagger horizontally.
"Pfft! Pfft! Pfft!"
Three cold lights pierced the man's left ribs in succession. Zhang Cheng seized the opportunity to grab the man's neck and pulled him back sharply, using him as a human shield in front of him.
