This case, involving nearly 14 million treasury bonds and five deaths, can be considered a major case.
However, with all the bandits killed, ending the matter wasn't too difficult.
As the victim, Zhang Cheng naturally does not need to bear criminal responsibility.
He whispered a few more words to Zhao Daming, then turned and left the office.
Outside the police station.
Zhang Tian was already waiting beside the truck. When he saw Zhang Cheng come out, he took a few steps to greet him, his face showing some urgency. "Master Zhang, is everything settled?"
Zhang Cheng nodded. "Go to Shanghai."
Zhang Tian's eyes lit up, and he immediately turned around and patted the truck bed. "Start the engine, let's go to Shanghai!"
The driver readily agreed and started the engine.
Zhang Cheng and Zhang Tian each drove a Santana. Of the two cars left on the national highway, one belonged to the bandits and had been towed away by the Jiaxing police; the other, which Zhang Tian had borrowed, was driven over by the Funing County police.
The Santana is currently very valuable, costing around 300,000 yuan. Zhang Tian had already contacted Jiaxing and sent someone to the Funing County Bureau to pick up the car.
From the window of his second-floor office, Zhao Daming watched the three cars slowly drive away, his brows furrowing involuntarily.
Zhang Jingtao's earlier phone call still echoes in my ears. Last night, two people died suddenly in Jiaxing.
One of them was Zhou Long, the owner of Xinglong Driving School. Their investigation revealed that Zhang Tian had previously hired two drivers from the driving school, but those two drivers were currently missing.
Zhou Long's death is likely related to Zhang Cheng.
Furthermore, the mastermind behind Xinglong Driving School is Jiang Jingtang of the Jiaxing Gang.
If Zhang Jingtao hadn't forcefully suppressed the investigation, these three cases would likely have already been merged and investigated together.
The decision not to merge the cases was not because Zhang Jingtao was giving Zhao Daming face, nor was it because he had a deep friendship with Zhang Cheng.
There was only one reason: the case involved nearly 14 million treasury bonds, and Zhang Jingtao was unwilling to complicate matters further.
If the cases are indeed merged, every police station in Jiaxing and Funing will be implicated.
Rather than doing that, it would be better to cut the Gordian knot and resolve the highway robbery as soon as possible.
As for the case of Zhou Long and Jiang Jingtang's murders, we will investigate it secretly through other channels.
Two Santana cars sped along the national highway, one in front of the other, with a large truck sandwiched in between.
The atmosphere inside the car was somewhat somber.
Zhang Jianhao turned his head to look at the scenery rushing past the window.
Along the way, numerous unauthorized toll booths sprang up. The tolls were small, only a few cents, but the sheer number of checkpoints made it impossible to resist.
After leaving Zhejiang Province, Zhang Cheng and his group estimated that they had encountered at least fifty or sixty such toll booths. Zhang Jianhao clicked his tongue; the tolls, when transferred together, were no small sum.
Three days later, the convoy entered Shanghai territory.
By 1987, Shanghai was already a bustling metropolis.
As soon as they entered the city, Zhang Cheng found a small shop and called Jiang Yuhong.
"Brother, aren't they cold wearing so little?" Zhang Jianhao pointed at a woman wearing a skirt on the street.
"His hair is curly, like the widow Wang from the east end of our village who ruined her perm." Li Fuguo also craned his neck.
"Holy crap, foreigners! Look, it's foreign devils!" one of the guys suddenly shouted.
The streets were bustling with fashionable pedestrians, which startled Zhang Jianhao and his companions, making them feel like country bumpkins visiting the Grand View Garden.
The car quickly drove into Yu Hong Street.
Lively and bustling.
On both sides of the road, cars of all kinds were lined up one after another. Pedestrians were all dressed smartly, with fashionable hairstyles and shiny leather shoes or high heels.
Yu Hong Department Store!
Looking at the huge neon sign hanging high in the distance, Zhang Cheng finally showed a faint smile.
The car came to a smooth stop outside the Yu Hong Department Store.
"Everyone get out of the car." Zhang Cheng pushed open the car door and got out first.
Zhang Jianhao and the others hurriedly followed, each looking reserved, and quickly approached Zhang Cheng.
"Zhang Cheng!"
A loud, hearty laugh came from not far away.
Jiang Yuhong, dressed in a sharp suit, with his hair slicked back and gold-rimmed glasses perched on his nose, strode in, laughing heartily, and carrying an ebony cane topped with gold.
He walked up to Zhang Cheng in a few steps, opened his arms, and said, "You little rascal, you've really surprised and delighted me!"
Zhang Cheng also smiled and spread his arms.
The two gave each other a tight hug.
"President Jiang, the treasury bonds are all on the truck in the back, about 14 million. Please have someone count them." Zhang Cheng released his hand.
"Alright!" Jiang Yuhong smiled and waved his hand, instructing the two young men behind him, "Drive the truck to warehouse number eight, call more people, and make sure the numbers are clear."
"Yes, General Manager Jiang!" the two young men replied with a bow.
At this moment, Zhang Tian also walked over quickly.
"President Jiang, this is my business partner, Zhang Tian, Mr. Zhang," Zhang Cheng introduced the two.
"Mr. Zhang, I've heard so much about you!" Jiang Yuhong extended his right hand.
"I don't deserve it, I don't deserve it!" Zhang Tian quickly stretched out his hands and shook them firmly.
"Come on, let's go eat first, I'll treat you to a welcome dinner!" Jiang Yuhong put his arm around Zhang Cheng's shoulder, exuding a heroic air, and as they walked towards the department store, he lowered his voice and asked, "Did something go wrong on the way?"
"Yes, but it's already cleaned up."
"I told you before, fighting and killing are ultimately inferior methods. With your current wealth, it's time for you to step out of that circle. Tonight, I'll introduce you to some friends; they're all influential figures."
Zhang Jianhao and the others followed closely behind, each one like a curious raccoon dog, looking around curiously.
The group quickly entered the elevator.
As the elevator ascended, Zhang Jianhao's face turned slightly pale, and he felt a wave of dizziness.
The same is true for most others.
"Ding!" The elevator stopped on the fifth floor.
