At the same time, a black Volkswagen Santana drove up slowly, like a shark patrolling in the night.
Inside the car, Zhao Shijie lowered the window and looked at Zhang Cheng, who was handcuffed but still struggling, with a hint of cat-and-mouse satisfaction on his lips.
"Mr. Zhang, what kind of show is this?"
His voice was full of undisguised mockery.
Upon hearing this, Zhang Cheng stopped his futile struggle, met Zhao Shijie's gaze, and even broke into a smile.
"President Zhao, your methods are truly superior."
"That's natural."
Zhao Shijie arrogantly raised his chin, "Otherwise, how could I have become the president of the Jiaxing Chamber of Commerce?"
He smiled and slowly rolled up the car window, the cold glass separating the two worlds.
"Mr. Zhang, I wish you a pleasant life in prison and a long and happy marriage."
The final, uncontrollable burst of wild laughter disappeared into the depths of the night as the Santana accelerated.
Zhang Cheng turned his head and stared at the departing taillights. The smile on his face did not disappear; instead, it became even brighter, so bright that it sent chills down one's spine.
More than an hour later.
When the news reached the Jiaxing Municipal Party Committee, Secretary Zhou convened an emergency meeting overnight.
The atmosphere in the meeting room was as oppressive as a tomb.
Secretary Zhou's roar almost lifted the roof off.
First, there were the sudden deaths of Zhou Long and Jiang Jingtang, then the fire at the guesthouse, and now, a shocking bloodbath has occurred in one night, claiming the lives of fifteen people!
He felt as if the chair beneath him was burning red-hot and could tip him over at any moment.
...
Municipal Public Security Bureau, interrogation room.
Under the glaring incandescent light, Zhang Cheng was firmly handcuffed to the interrogation chair.
The person who personally interrogated him was Yan Gang, the director of the Public Security Bureau.
"Zhang Cheng, confess honestly." Yan Gang's voice was devoid of any warmth.
"Director Yan, I've repeated myself many times, I'm the victim, I've been kidnapped." Zhang Cheng's tone was as calm as if he were narrating someone else's story.
"Kidnapping?" Yan Gang sneered. "Then tell me, how did you escape? And what about those fifteen dead men?"
"It's very simple."
Zhang Cheng spoke slowly, his logic frighteningly clear.
"Last time I came to Jiaxing, I made an enemy of a thug called Brother Dao, and many people know that. Not long ago, I was using the restroom at a noodle shop when someone pointed a gun at my lower back. Director Yan, if you were in my shoes, would you dare to fight back?"
“They forced me into a car, and an accident happened on the national highway. I took advantage of the chaos to steal another car and escape.”
"As for the truck that chased me, it must have been stolen by Brother Dao's men. It almost knocked me off the road. It exploded after I jumped out."
"Nonsense!"
Yan Gang slammed his fist on the table and roared, "How do you explain the bullet holes on the truck?!"
"How would I know?" Zhang Cheng looked innocent, even with a hint of bitterness and lingering fear. "Director Yan, at that moment, I only had one word in my mind: escape."
"Okay, okay, okay!"
Yan Gang was so angry he laughed. He really wanted to teach this stubborn bastard a lesson, but the other party was a key investment target of the city, so he couldn't touch him.
He took a deep breath, suppressed his anger, turned around and prepared to leave, intending to let a more professional pre-trial debriefing wear down the kid's arrogance.
Just as he turned around, Zhang Cheng's unhurried voice rang out again.
"Director Yan, as a victim and a legitimate businessman investing in Jiaxing, should I be handcuffed to a chair like this?"
Yan Gang paused, turned around abruptly, and stared at Zhang Cheng with eyes like knives.
"Zhang Cheng, just because you say you're the victim doesn't mean you are!"
"Then, Director Yan, do you have any evidence to prove that I am not a victim?"
"Sharp-tongued and quick-witted!"
Yan Gang approached step by step, looking down at him from above, his voice low, like the growl of a wild beast.
"Zhang Cheng, don't treat everyone like fools. This case is too big, big enough to crush anyone. Do you think you can walk away cleanly? Let me tell you, I'll find the evidence very soon!"
I believe you.
Zhang Cheng surprisingly nodded and smiled, "I believe in Director Yan's abilities. But this is a society that values evidence. I traveled hundreds of miles to invest, only to be kidnapped, barely escape with my life, and yet all I got were cold handcuffs and interrogation. Tell me, if other out-of-town businessmen in Jiaxing knew this, wouldn't they feel a chill in their hearts?"
"Businessmen are driven by profit. They're no strangers to you, so why should they be disheartened by you?" Yan Gang said disdainfully. "You know best what role you're in this charade!"
"Why……"
Zhang Cheng suddenly sighed softly.
“Director Yan, I completely agree with what you just said about ‘businessmen pursuing profit’.”
He raised his head, his eerie eyes staring directly into Yan Gang's heart.
"That's why I think it's best for you to let me go."
Who do you think you are?
These words rolled in Yan Gang's throat, but he couldn't bring himself to say them.
Looking into Zhang Cheng's all-knowing eyes, he felt a chill run down his spine.
In the end, he said nothing, only gave Zhang Cheng a deep look, then turned and strode out of the interrogation room.
He was going to see Secretary Zhou. This Zhang Cheng was no longer someone that he, as the police chief, could handle alone.
...
Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away in Funing County.
As soon as Li Yuanyuan's Volkswagen Santana came to a stop in front of the clothing store, Old Liu from the "Treasury Bond Recycling Center" across the street jogged over.
"Mr. Li!"
"Mr. Liu, is something the matter?"
"Mr. Zhang asked me to pass on a message to you before." Old Liu said in a serious tone, "He said that if he doesn't contact you within two hours, you should immediately go to Zhao Daming, the director of Nanyang Street Police Station, and then contact Tong Kaiwen, the inspector of the procuratorate."
