Secretary Liu hung up the phone and slowly took off his black-rimmed glasses.
Wearing glasses for many years has made his eye sockets deep-set; now, with his eyes squinting, his slightly protruding eyeballs...
Under the illumination of the office overhead lights, a sharp and cold light, like that of a hawk, was reflected.
Zhao Daming stood there, feeling like a rabbit being watched, his blood seemed to slow down.
"explain."
Secretary Liu's voice was very soft, yet it was like an icicle piercing Zhao Daming's eardrum.
"Zhang Cheng, how did you find out that Miao Miao has a new boyfriend?"
Zhao Daming forced a smile that looked more like a grimace, and stiffly shook his neck:
"Secretary Liu, if I say I really don't know, would you... believe me?"
Bang!
A muffled thud.
Instead of slamming his fist on the table, Secretary Liu slammed his heavy black-rimmed glasses down onto the surface.
The sound of the solid wood tabletop colliding with the metal frame made Zhao Daming's heart skip a beat.
"Liu Miaomiao is studying in Shanghai, a thousand miles away."
Secretary Liu's voice remained steady, but every word carried a chilling coldness.
“Zhang Cheng is incredibly powerful and influential; he even knows about my daughter’s new boyfriend, a private matter?”
"What is he doing? Investigating my family, investigating my weaknesses, and then what? Using this to blackmail me, the municipal party secretary?"
Secretary Liu's anger was not a roar, but a deathly silence like a volcano about to erupt, making it almost impossible for Zhao Daming to breathe.
He knew that if he misspoke even one word, the consequences would be a hundred times worse than being yelled at.
"Secretary Liu, please calm down. Zhang Cheng would never dare to threaten you!" Zhao Daming hurriedly explained.
"As for Miss Miao Miao's matter, perhaps... perhaps Zhang Cheng heard about it by chance when he went to Shanghai last time!"
"accidental?"
Secretary Liu's lips curled into a sinister smile. He slowly stood up, walked around the desk, and approached Zhao Daming step by step.
"Zhao Daming, you're a veteran police officer. Do you think I'd believe in such a coincidence?"
"Fudan University is so big, how could Zhang Cheng possibly run into Liu Miaomiao as soon as he goes there?"
"Even if we did run into him, would my daughter know who he is? Would she tell such a private matter to a stranger?"
"Or do you think my daughter considers it an honor to be two-timing, and that it's become public knowledge throughout Shanghai?"
A barrage of questions struck Zhao Daming like a hammer blow, leaving him pale, his lips trembling, and unable to utter a single word.
Because he knew that Liu Miaomiao's new boyfriend was Zhang Cheng's business partner in Shanghai, Jiang Yuhong.
This was no coincidence at all, but a precise trap set by Zhang Cheng.
Secretary Liu approached step by step, and the powerful sense of oppression made Zhao Daming instinctively retreat.
Suddenly, Secretary Liu stopped in his tracks, grabbed the telephone on the table, and held it high!
Zhao Daming's pupils contracted sharply, and he closed his eyes.
"Ring ring—!"
The sharp ringing of the telephone suddenly sounded at that moment, like a life-saving spell.
Secretary Liu's arm, which was holding the telephone high, froze in mid-air for a moment. He stared intently at Zhao Daming, his chest heaving violently, before finally slamming the telephone down and answering the receiver.
"Dad, why did you suddenly call the head of student affairs?"
On the phone, I heard my daughter Liu Miaomiao's sweet, soft voice.
Secretary Liu took a deep breath, forcibly suppressing his surging anger, and even managed a stiff smile on his face.
"Miaomiao, Daddy's just worried about you. By the way, have you contacted Xiao Zhong recently?"
"Dad, I've already said it, your studies should be the priority right now..."
The little girl has learned to lie.
This realization plunged Secretary Liu into despair.
He stopped beating around the bush and his voice became deep: "Miaomiao, Dad heard from someone that you...made new friends over there?"
There was an instant silence on the other end of the phone.
“Miaomiao, Dad didn’t send anyone to investigate you, I just heard about it by chance.” Secretary Liu softened his tone, with a hint of weariness that was barely perceptible. “Dad said that whatever choice you make, I will support you. Back then, when you chose Zhong Te, Dad agreed.”
After a long silence, a voice, choked with sobs, came from the phone: "Dad, I'm sorry..."
"Silly child, tell your father, who is the other person?"
"His...his name is Jiang Yuhong. He's very famous in Shanghai. Even our advisor..."
Jiang Yuhong!
These three words were like a bullet, striking Secretary Liu precisely in the temple.
In that instant, he felt not anger, but a deep-seated disgust and coldness of being schemed against.
Zhang Cheng! Jiang Yuhong!
I see!
He suddenly looked up at Zhao Daming, his eyes filled with murderous intent.
He grabbed the pen holder from the table and, with all his might, smashed it towards Zhao Daming!
Zhao Daming didn't dodge, not because he was afraid, but because his legs had gone limp with fear.
"Bang!"
The pen holder grazed his cheek and slammed heavily against the wall behind him, scattering pens and stationery all over the floor.
Zhao Daming trembled and scrambled over to pick up the pen holder and the scattered pens. He placed them back on Secretary Liu's desk with trembling hands, then lowered his head like a prisoner awaiting trial.
On the phone, Liu Miaomiao asked worriedly, "Dad, what was that sound just now?"
“It’s nothing,” Secretary Liu’s voice was eerily calm. “The pen holder just fell out.”
He clenched his fist so tightly that his knuckles turned white from the force.
"Miaomiao, you handle your own affairs with Zhong Te. As for Jiang Yuhong, if there's a chance, let Dad meet him."
