Meng Shuyun found a rickshaw driver and spoke fluent Cantonese.
She used to work in a textile factory, which later moved to Guangzhou. She stayed there for a few years, sending her wages back to her hometown every month, and naturally learned the local dialect.
Later, she contracted tuberculosis, was laid off, and had no choice but to return to her hometown to sweep the streets.
The rickshaw driver looked at Meng Shuyun with surprise and doubt, thinking that she was obviously from out of town, but she could speak such fluent Cantonese, which was really surprising.
"You need a pass? You're not a local, so that's not easy," the rickshaw driver said bluntly. "The controls are very strict now; not just anyone can get through."
Meng Shuyun nodded and calmly took out the change she had prepared beforehand.
In her view, there is nothing that money can't solve.
With the help of money, they were able to enter the special economic zone smoothly.
The thriving scene before him immediately caught Su Xiangnan's eye; the newly emerging high-rise buildings were full of vitality and life.
Before they knew it, they had reached the riverbank and stopped under the shade of a large tree, with the port city right across the river.
“The port city is right across the street. Without a permit, you can’t get across,” Meng Shuyun said.
Su Xiangnan stared at it quietly for a long time before turning away and walking back.
They hailed a tricycle, but halfway there, the road ahead was blocked.
They weren't far away, and they could still hear the workers shouting for a strike.
Gu Xue stood up and glanced at it, her expression instantly freezing. She hurriedly grabbed Su Xiangnan's hand and said, "Xiangnan, this way is blocked, let's go the other way."
Su Xiangnan grasped Gu Xue's somewhat cold hand in return, nodded, and told his master to take another route.
His peripheral vision fell on a building not far ahead, and his eyes became deep and unfathomable.
Even Meng Shuyun was curious about what had happened to make Gu Xue so nervous.
Back at the guesthouse, Gu Xue explained with lingering fear, "There, I saw my cousin, my uncle's son..."
My uncle was the one who hired someone to kill me.
I'm an only child. If we run into him and he recognizes me, I'm afraid there will be trouble.
Su Xiangnan held Gu Xue's hand tightly, his eyes filled with heartache and deep anxiety, and gently comforted her, "It's okay, we won't go out for the next few days."
...
In the evening, Meng Shuyun tiptoed out to get water. In the dimly lit corridor, the lights flickered dimly.
Just as she reached the door of the boiler room, she caught a glimpse of a familiar figure out of the corner of her eye. Upon closer inspection, she realized it was Su Xiangnan returning from outside.
She stared in disbelief, her eyes wide with shock.
"You went out? Does Xue'er know?" Meng Shuyun asked hurriedly, her tone full of doubt.
Su Xiangnan shook his head slightly, his expression somewhat evasive, and said in a low voice, "She doesn't know, don't tell her."
Meng Shuyun opened her mouth, but swallowed the words back. She knew that asking any further questions would likely yield no results.
But for the next two nights in a row, she caught Su Xiangnan sneaking out late at night.
Seeing that it was already the second night, Meng Shuyun couldn't hold back any longer. When Su Xiangnan returned, she stepped forward to stop him and asked anxiously, "What exactly did you go out to do?"
What could possibly require you to go out at this hour?
Meng Shuyun was puzzled. Su Xiangnan was already a patient with many mobility issues, yet he still went out every day. This really made people suspicious.
"Nothing much, just going out for a walk, I felt so stifled staying indoors."
Su Xiangnan spoke casually, as if he had simply gone for a walk, without a trace of anything unusual on his face.
Seeing that she couldn't get any answers from him, Meng Shuyun had no choice but to give up.
...
Meanwhile, Su Xiumei and Zhou Xianye rushed to the border between Pengcheng and Gangcheng with great anxiety. Ignoring their fatigue from the journey, they began to inspect the passing tourist buses one by one.
Their eyes were filled with anxiety and anticipation, not letting go of any possible clue.
However, day after day passed, and they still couldn't find any trace of the Xiaoli and Xiaojuan sisters.
Su Xiumei spent her days in tears, and in just a few days, she seemed to have aged twenty years in an instant. She became extremely thin, and her eyes were filled with despair and sorrow.
Zhou Xianye's hair turned white overnight, and his face became haggard. Even so, he gritted his teeth and insisted on getting into the car to look for his daughters. He didn't even miss the trunk where the luggage was stored. He would carefully knock on every suitcase and shout a few words, hoping to get a response from his daughters.
As Meng Kangshun went through security, he inadvertently caught sight of Su Xiumei and Zhou Xianye by the roadside. His pupils constricted sharply, and he was shocked.
In just two days, the eldest sister and Zhou Xianye seemed to have become completely different people. If he hadn't looked closely, he almost wouldn't have recognized them.
He quickly said a few words to his colleagues, then hurriedly got out of the car, walked quickly to Su Xiumei's side, and grabbed her hand.
"Big sister, I know about Xiaoli and Xiaojuan. Don't worry, I have a way to go to Gangcheng. I will definitely be able to find them."
Meng Kangshun's eyes were firm, and he held Su Xiumei's hands tightly, as if he wanted to pass on all his strength to her.
Su Xiumei's swollen and cloudy eyes seemed to be suddenly filled with a glimmer of light. She nodded vigorously, then nodded heavily again, holding Meng Kangshun's hand tightly. Tears rolled down her face like broken beads, tinged with red.
