The menacing aura emanating from Su Xiangnan vanished instantly, like a punctured balloon. He held Gu Xue's hand, his eyes slightly red.
"Thank you, Xue'er. It's my fault for leaving you behind. I won't do it again." Su Xiangnan felt guilty and took a small bite of his cornbread.
Chewing it slowly, as if savoring some rare delicacy, it took a while before swallowing.
He forced a smile, said it was delicious, and pulled Gu Xue back to the neighboring courtyard.
Gu Xue seemed to suddenly remember something, turned her head and waved to Meng Shuyun, calling out in a clear voice, "Goodbye, Grandma."
Meng Shuyun stood at the door, raised her hand and waved as a response.

Meng Shuyun withdrew her gaze expressionlessly, while Su Xiangnan's back view conveyed a sense of unfathomable mystery.
Su Xiuju paid the fare at the village chief's house, borrowed a flashlight, and ran back home.
"Mother, I'm back." Seeing her mother waiting at the gate, Su Xiuju felt a warm glow in her heart, and her eyes welled up with tears.
"The doctor at the clinic said that Dad and my eldest brother's family all suffered from food poisoning, and they have already had their stomachs pumped and are lying in the hospital."
My sister-in-law gave birth prematurely and is currently in the county hospital. My second brother is anxious to come back, so I came back first.
"Mom, should we go to the hospital now?" Su Xiuju asked softly, her eyes revealing a hint of uncertainty.
Meng Shuyun turned around, her expression firm, her tone leaving no room for doubt: "What are you doing at the hospital so late at night? It's not like it's my daughter-in-law or grandson. Going over there like that is just asking for trouble. Go wash up and go back to your room to sleep. Don't come back this late next time. It's too dangerous for a young lady to walk alone at night."
