Just as the two sides were arguing fiercely, two police officers strode over.
"Who called the police?" The lead police officer asked with a stern expression, quickly flipping through his notebook to take notes.
"I called the police." Su Xiangbei stepped forward, pointed at Meng Shuyun, and shouted, "Police officers, you have to stand up for my family! My mother, Meng Shuyun, is vicious and tried to kill our whole family! The chicken is still there, in the main room. If you take it to be tested, you'll be able to find out if it's poisoned."
"Alright." The police officer frowned, sternly stopping them, his gaze sweeping sharply across the crowd. "Who is Meng Shuyun? Step forward."
“I am.” Meng Shuyun stepped forward neither humbly nor arrogantly, her face calm as still water, showing no fear of being identified, but rather as if she were the wronged victim.
“I can’t be falsely accused for something I didn’t do. This is slander and malicious defamation.”
"You say Meng Shuyun poisoned him, but what evidence do you have?" The police officer looked at Su Xiangbei, his tone exuding an unquestionable authority.
“That chicken! Our whole family got poisoned after eating her chicken. Wouldn’t it be clear if it were tested?”
Su Xiangbei was so anxious that the veins on his neck were bulging, and he pointed towards the main room.
Just then, Su Dahai came out carrying a bowl of chicken in both hands.
A layer of golden chicken fat condensed on top, which looked rather eerie.
"Officer, the chicken is here."
Meng Shuyun cried out her innocence: "Officer, I'm innocent! I want to accuse them of deliberately framing me. Su Dahai is my ex-husband, and Su Xiangbei is my son. Just because I didn't give them the house, they hold a grudge and are trying to extort the house from me. Why do they say this chicken is mine? It's my own chicken, perfectly fine in the yard! Everything needs evidence; you can't just rely on hearsay."
Meng Shuyun spoke clearly and logically, glancing at Su Xiuju as she spoke, gesturing for her to chase the chickens out of the yard.
A little while later, the old hens were herded out. There were eight of them in total, clucking and flapping their wings in the yard.
Su Xiangbei stared wide-eyed, his face full of disbelief. "Impossible! Your chicken was poisoned by rat poison yesterday. You threw it into the bamboo forest, and Jiang Xue picked it up."
Meng Shuyun was too lazy to argue with Su Xiangbei anymore. She turned around and pulled Zhang Laidi to stand next to her.
“I have a witness. The village chief’s wife saw Jiang Xue carrying the chicken back by herself yesterday. It has nothing to do with my chicken.”
Zhang Laidi nodded hurriedly: "Yes, police officer, I saw it clearly. Jiang Xue picked it up from somewhere herself. Sister Meng went to ask a carpenter for help, so it wasn't the same route at all."
The two police officers frowned as they quickly took a statement; after all, it was just a family matter.
Su Xiangbei and Su Dahai were not about to give up and tried to argue their way out.
His face flushed red, and he shouted, "How can we not go the same way! We can go around, Meng Shuyun is doing it on purpose."
"Alright." The police officer looked up, his gaze sweeping over Su Xiangbei and Su Dahai's faces. "Can you provide evidence that this chicken belongs to Meng Shuyun? If not, I suggest you settle this privately. We police generally don't interfere in family matters."
The police officer put it bluntly: even an upright official finds it difficult to settle family disputes; it's best to resolve them privately.
“Officers, you can’t just leave like this! Meng Shuyun… she even hit someone! Look, I still have her footprints on my butt! Surely you can catch her this time.”
Su Dahai twisted his body, looking aggrieved.
“Yes, she hit me too,” Su Xiangbei chimed in.
Su Xiuju's chest heaved with anger as she stepped forward and accused, "Father, elder brother, you were the ones who started it. Everyone saw it clearly."
"What business is it of yours? Get out of the way. If you dare to help her, you're an accomplice." Su Dahai glared at him, threatening him fiercely.
Just then, Gu Xue pushed Su Xiangbei out of the courtyard slowly, her expression indifferent, as if all of this had nothing to do with her and she was detached from it.
"Xiang Nan, you've come at the right time! Quickly explain the chicken incident to the police officers. We've been poisoned!" Su Xiangbei looked at Su Xiangnan expectantly, hoping he would step forward and say something.
Su Xiangnan's face was cold and expressionless as he spoke indifferently, "What does this have to do with me?"
Su Xiangbei stared wide-eyed at Su Dahai as if he had heard something unbelievable, his eyes wide as if asking: Is this still his second brother?
Su Dahai, his face dark, shouted, "Xiang Nan, what do you mean by that? You live in this house, shouldn't you say something in defense of us?"
Su Xiangnan stopped his wheelchair, frowned slightly, as if pondering for a moment, and coldly said, "I wouldn't dare to eat anything I picked up from outside."
After saying that, he pushed his wheelchair and left without looking back.
Su Dahai and Su Xiangbei were so angry that their faces turned pale and then red.
The police officers had thoroughly investigated the situation and advised them to mediate privately before turning back.
Meng Shuyun stood to the side, a slightly mocking smile playing on her lips, and turned to beckon Su Xiuju to drive the chickens back.
She sarcastically said to Su Xiangbei, "If I were you, I would rush to the hospital right now. If anything happens to Jiang Xue, I might be able to see her one last time."
Su Xiangbei's face turned pale, both ashamed and angry. He grabbed Su Dahai and rushed to the hospital.
