Meng Shuyun came out of the police station looking exhausted.
Night had fallen, and darkness enveloped the earth.
Su Xiumei and her two daughters huddled together in a corner, leaning on each other.
Upon seeing Meng Shuyun emerge, they immediately rushed over.
"Grandma, how are you? Are you hungry? Here, have this milk candy."
Xiao Juan held Meng Shuyun's hand, tilted her head up, and looked at her with concern in her big eyes.
"Grandma, here's some candy for you too."
Xiaoli also thoughtfully offered her her own milk candy.
The two sisters couldn't bear to eat those two milk candies the whole way; they kept them in their pockets and would take them out to look at them every now and then.
Looking at her two sensible children, Meng Shuyun's eyes welled up with tears. She gently comforted them, "Grandma's alright. It's dark now, and there are no more cars. Let's find a guesthouse to stay in first, and then go back together tomorrow. Come on, Grandma will take you to eat something delicious."
Su Xiumei took a white steamed bun out of her pocket and handed it to her, saying, "Mom, did the police give you any trouble? This is what I bought, have something to eat first. Gu Xue went with Xiang Nan, and I don't think she'll come back."
Meng Shuyun was somewhat surprised; she hadn't expected there to be a white steamed bun.
Looking down, I saw the two little ones swallowing hard, their stomachs growling with hunger.
"Where did these steamed buns come from?" Meng Shuyun asked.
"I just found a dime and bought a steamed bun," Su Xiumei replied somewhat embarrassedly.
Meng Shuyun broke the steamed bun into four pieces, giving each person a small piece. Seeing her sensible daughter and granddaughter always thinking of her first, she felt a mix of sadness and gratitude, her heart aching.
"Grandma doesn't want the candy, you can keep it. Let's go to a restaurant now!" With that, Meng Shuyun took one child in each hand and walked towards the restaurant.
Su Xiumei ate the small half of the steamed bun in her hand, her eyes welling up with tears.
She knew that her mother always cared about her and had two daughters.
