“If you’re not leaving, then call me.” He looked down at her.
Su Xueli steeled her heart. So what if he called her husband? It wouldn't hurt her or give her mouth ulcers. She would just call him that.
"My lord."
"That sounds good, say it again."
Su Xueli blushed deeply, "Husband, husband, husband..."
"Hey hey hey hahaha..." Wei Mingshen responded with a hearty laugh.
Looking at his smug expression, Su Xueli wanted nothing more than to smear a face full of potato shreds on him and see if he was still handsome or if he was still trying to seduce people everywhere.
"Hurry up and finish!" she snarled.
"I'll do it, I'll do it! I'll get to work as fast as I can!" He quickly picked up the paint bottle.
Another whole afternoon passed. Although their arms ached and their fingers were numb, the two of them looked at the little figures they had arranged on the ground and felt as sweet as if they had eaten honey. They had made another sum of money.
During the meal, Cao Maizi gave the young couple an order: tomorrow she would take them to her cousin's village to see an old traditional Chinese medicine doctor.
Su Xueli couldn't refuse this, because if a man has this kind of disease, a woman should be just as anxious as the man, or even more anxious. If she showed that she didn't care, she would give herself away.
So she readily agreed.
Looking at Wei Mingshen, his face was as black as a pot, but knowing he couldn't escape, he had no choice but to bite the bullet and agree.
Okay, I guess I'll have to listen to my mother and go see a traditional Chinese medicine doctor.
The next day, after breakfast, Wei Mingshen drove a mule cart, taking his mother and wife to see a doctor.
His face was as gloomy as if he were visiting a grave. Cao Maizi felt as if he had a belly full of straw, but he still had to put on a smiling face and greet the acquaintances, and lied that he was going to visit relatives.
Only Su Xueli looked at Wei Mingshen's straight and handsome back with a sense of contentment.
She said smugly: "Wei Mingshen, is this the retribution you got for the emotional abuse you gave me in your past life?"
And you know what? That traditional Chinese medicine doctor was really skilled. He took Wei Mingshen's pulse and immediately said that he was very strong and had no problems at all.
But Wei Mingshen insisted that he "couldn't do it," leaving the old Chinese medicine doctor completely baffled.
Having no other option, he finally pointed out a "clear path": go to the temple and pray to the gods.
Su Xueli desperately suppressed her laughter and ran out of the clinic, leaving Wei Mingshen looking at his mother with a relaxed expression.
There's an old saying that a traditional Chinese medicine doctor is half a sage. Cao Maizi believed the old doctor's suggestion wholeheartedly. She kept asking, "Which temple should we go to to pray? Which temple has the most efficacious deity? Which deity is in charge of this matter?"
When Cao Maizi came out of the clinic again, his face was full of piety and solemnity. He put his hands together and said, "Amitabha."
Su Xueli shivered.
Sitting on the mule cart, Cao Maizi said, "I told you my son is perfectly healthy and won't get sick. He must have offended something bad. Let's go to the temple and pray to the gods to remove the evil spirit."
Then he gave several examples of people who were very healthy but were afflicted by something and developed certain symptoms.
Wei Mingshen and Su Xueli nodded, pretending to believe them.
Cao Maizi instructed Wei Mingshen and Su Xueli: "From now on, you two must be obedient. When your mother tells you to go to the temple to worship the gods, go properly and be sincere. Also, you are not allowed to say disrespectful things to the gods in our house..."
"Mother, as long as I don't have to eat vegetarian food and chant Buddhist prayers, that's fine," Wei Mingshen interrupted her.
Cao Maizi said solemnly, "From now on, our whole family really has to eat vegetarian food. We can't touch any meat, and we can't even eat eggs. Oh, and we won't be buying meat for Chinese New Year this year either."
"Ah, this..." Wei Mingshen and Su Xueli looked at each other in bewilderment.
Wei Mingshen protested: "That won't do, Mother. A long-term vegetarian diet will ruin your health. Even if I recover from my illness, I won't have the energy to give you a grandson..."
