Su Xueli said, "That's good. They were very good to me. I'm still a little unaccustomed to leaving so suddenly."
She was telling the truth.
Wei Mingshen said, "They are the same. They treated you like their own daughter. They couldn't bear it when you suddenly disappeared from their home."
He turned away so she wouldn't see his expression.
Not only his parents couldn't stand it, but he couldn't stand it either.
Su Xueli didn't want him to see her red eyes, so she turned her back to him.
The two of them remained silent, each with their backs to the other.
"This...you!" Liu Fengying came in carrying breakfast, looking at Wei Mingshen with a blank expression.
Wei Mingshen was also taken aback, but he quickly composed himself and politely greeted her, "Auntie, you've come."
Liu Fengying said repeatedly, "Oh, oh, I'm here! Um, what brings you here?"
Wei Mingshen said generously, "Auntie, although Xue Li and I are divorced, we still make straw crafts together."
Su Xueli chimed in, "Yes, yes, yes."
Liu Fengying thought to herself that since they were divorced, they shouldn't see each other again, but looking at this tall, handsome young man who was so polite to her, and who was her son-in-law yesterday, she couldn't bring herself to say it.
She also thoughtfully asked him, "Have you had breakfast? If not, let's eat together. I bought a lot."
She bought a large enamel mug of spicy soup, as well as fried buns and fried dough sticks.
Wei Mingshen truly said, "I didn't eat."
She was dumbfounded. She couldn't very well say she hadn't bought it from you, could she? She had no choice but to bite the bullet and say, "Then you two eat together. I still have to go home to cook, prepare pig feed, and feed the chickens..."
That was her daily routine for decades after she married into the Su family.
Su Xueli said, "Okay, Mother, you can go now."
Wei Mingshen also politely said, "Take care, ma'am."
For a moment, Liu Fengying had the illusion that they weren't divorced.
As soon as her mother left, Su Xueli urged Wei Mingshen, "Hurry up and eat, it'll get cold. I'll get a bowl and pour some hot and sour soup."
Su Xueli poured a small portion of the spicy soup into a bowl, leaving more than half in an enamel mug for Wei Mingshen. The two sat at the table and ate breakfast as naturally as if they were at his home every day.
However, at this moment, the two of them seemed more like a young couple.
After finishing breakfast, Su Xueli wiped her mouth with a tissue and said, "I went home to sleep last night and only came over with my mother this morning."
Wei Mingshen was relieved and said, "Then I worried about you for nothing."
Su Xueli asked, "You didn't wait for me outside all night, did you?"
He asked, "Am I that stupid?"
The two of them laughed.
Actually, things weren't as casual as he made them out to be last night. After telling his parents that he and Su Xueli had divorced, he ran away to sleep at his childhood friend's house in the same village to avoid their nagging.
He couldn't sleep, his mind filled with images of Su Xueli, and he worried about whether she would be scared living alone in a strange rented apartment, and whether there would be bad people around...
He eventually left his childhood friend's house and walked all the way to the courtyard rented by Su Xueli in town. To his surprise, the gate was locked from the outside, and the inside was dark and didn't look like anyone lived there.
He wondered if she had gone to see He Yulan and might be back a little late.
He waited quietly until late at night, but she didn't return. He then went to He Yulan's barbershop in town to look for her, but the barbershop was already closed and pitch black inside.
Finally, he returned home filled with doubt and disappointment.
Wei Mingshen said, "I've talked to Dad about the thatch, and he's perfectly fine. Don't worry."
Su Xueli asked him, "Do your parents know that we're still doing straw weaving together?"
